How do you deal with troublesome captains? When do you need to start preparing for command upgrade and how do you do that? What can you expect from your MCC course?
These are some of the questions I will be tackling in this video podcast.
Other things include what the airlines are expecting from you as a first officer, what kind of people they hire etc.
    Enjoy!

You give us the feeling of having a personal friend on the left seat, sharing your experience in a very generous way. 20 years ago you couldn´t take a single word out of a Captain. Seeing your videos gets me excited about being serious and really CHASING that goal as I'm trying to learn as much as I can before beginning my training. Interesting video, thanks. I can really relate to the impressions given to the general public with proper uniform, or not. I've attended several symphonies, and the orchestra folks are always formally dressed and look professional. At one point I had an opportunity to attend a dress rehearsal with my son's school group. I hadn't thought about it, but in the dress rehearsal the performers were not in their usual formal outfits -- jeans, slacks, ordinary shirts, etc., was the norm. What a surprise that was. The performance was still superb, even when they stopped to go back to improve a section, but the overall feeling was entirely different.

One video I'd like to see for all the folks out there who don't know is your attitude and work ethic when you first get selected as I notice many new pilots will hit a brick wall when they first experience the demanding nature of the flight deck (thinking that once training is over they have made it) and Id also like to hear how many Sim checks, EPs, etc. You do each year as newbies at Flying school usually have no idea what awaits them.

I would have loved to fly commercial when I can out of school 40 years ago, but in those days if you did not have perfect 20/20 vision to start, you could not get hired as a pilot or even in air traffic control. So, after a number of side trips, I became a physics teacher. I still love the technology and play around with flight sim when I have the time. • @TommyLie1993
    @TommyLie1993 Před 8 lety

Nice video, and intro! And thanks for making these videos, they are fantastic! I'd personally like to see more lifestyle videos. One of the things which really appeals to me about being a pilot is the lifestyle pilots live, especially in comparison to a 'typical' 9-5 office job say.
I'd love to see a video where you talk about the different lifestyles involved with different sorts of flying jobs (Regional to international to bush etc - if you can). In terms of working hours, how much is in the cockpit and how much is not, time off to focus on other aspects of life (quite a big area of curiosity for me - I know pilots usually aren't 5 days, 9-5 workers. I got the impression from your other videos its more like X days on then Y days off), and any other differences you can think of.
I'm curious because for me, although I know my job is going to be a big part of my life, I'd like it to just be a part of who I am and not entirely define me (by taking up all my waking hours). Is there still time to keep healthy and fit, to socialize, to maintain hobbies (for example I like to go out and do social Latin dancing at various venues in whatever city I'm in), to find love/date etc. Which sort of flying jobs may offer a more 'balanced' or 'integrated' life? (Not really sure if that's up to the airline or an aspect of the type of job, bit I'd love to hear your thoughts). Which sort of flying jobs have huge commitment hours and which are a lot more relaxed? A friend of mine at my uni told me their dad (an Emirates A380 captain) works 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off - is that a special circumstance or is that fairly standard (or is my friend exaggerating)? In which cases?
I live in Australia as well - thought I'd mention that as I understand it can be very different in other countries, especially USA.
A final thing would be, for each flying job you're able to talk about, how much is in the cockpit and how much is 'in the office'? Is all pilot work just in, or literally to do with operating and maintaining the aircraft, or is there components where you're at a desk doing a lot of 'paper work'?
Hopefully I didn't overload you with questions haha, you did ask though ;)
    Cheers
    Tommy

215 likes and 0 dislikes very impressive, another great video by the way! I would love you to do somethings on the sim but i also like the lifestyle videos a lot, a day in the life would be great but as you said it would be hard to do any in flight filming so not sure on how you could do it but it would be awesome if you could!

Hi, thanks so much for doing the amazing videos on your channel. I am finding them extremely informative. I am soon to try and start pilot training, so at the moment I'm studying hard to try and ensure I pass the entrance tests first time. I will continue to watch though all your videos - and please, keep them coming.
Just one thing that I would find very interesting if you did a video on (forgive me if you already have and I haven't seen it yet), but that is what do you think is going to happen in the future regarding the aviation industry. What do you see happening in terms of the demands of pilots and the development of machinery and technology in terms of the aircraft?
    Thanks!

Congrats on the new intro, it's awesome!
Can you suggest something to read( Maybe like reading the ATPL theory books) or do ( like home PC simulators, Microsoft FSX/ PMDG?) prior to comencing flight training, to get better results faster? Anything? As always thanks for the videos, I hope you know they are greatly appreciated :)

+Mentour Pilot That was quick ... Thanks a lot and about the development of the channel I think that there should be balance between the technical and lifestyle type of videos. I still haven't watch all the videos(I intend to do so) but maybe more about the starting/during pilot training and something around this. Like this video: what to or not to do...
Maybe if not videos, then photos from the flight deck or around during the inspection of the plane? And put them on your Facebook page?
      Thanks again you are great!

Great video as always! I think a week in the life of a pilot would be a good video. It is all very well to show one day but if you had a video diary of 1 week it would give a good impression of how much a pilot actually works?!
