  • Welcome Back! I missed making these videos for you all and I hope you had an awesome summer! It is great to be back! This week I am breaking down exactly how I keep my Florida Bark Scorpion, know scientifically as the Centruroides gracilis. I cover feeding, molting, enclosures, husbandry, and keeping this scorpion species communally. I also tell you how you can get some of your own Centruroides species that come directly from my collection!

    This was so helpful! I recently caught some striped bark scorpions from my culinary class. I decided it would be interesting to keep them (since I love all insects and arachnids). They have been such a joy to watch and learn about. I've been wanting to set up a more permanent enclosure for them. This video was easy to understand and follow. Keep up the good work!
    EDIT: I do have one question. What would you recommend as a tank size guideline? I've heard that a dozen can go in a 10 gallon tank, but that seems very small for that many. I currently have 3 (I believe 2 juveniles and 1 adult).

    @Androctonus84 Před 2 lety

    I was really into scorps about 15 years ago, with over 100 species in my collection, and I used to breed these guys. Yes LOTS of babies. At one point I had about 300 2nd-3rd instars at once. A lot of work to care for them all, but a really great and easy scorp to keep and breed. They are beautifully colored at that stage, and really aggressive feeders. I've seen them take down prey much larger than themselves with ease, though that isn't ideal or recommended.
    You're right, you do have to be careful with the juveniles. Even if well-fed, this species will cannibalize tank mates going through or shortly after a molt while the exoskeleton is still unhardened. I've never had an issue once the exoskeleton has hardened though. They are a large and very attractive bark scorpion that is a lot of fun to keep.

      @@gruntlegpeice6099 oh I think i understand. I think you are confused. I dont sell tarantulas, I take photos and make videos on tarantulas and other inverts and exotic pets. Sometimes different dealers or companies pay to advertise on the channel or help out with one thing or another. If you are referring to Fear Not Tarantulas which I link to in this video, they are a separate company and I do not own that company, manage their website or work for them. So any customer service questions would need to be sent to them. But they have a page on their site that explains in detail how they measure their tarantulas. 3/4-1" means three quarters of an inch to 1 inch in size Diagonal legspan.

    Hey Richard! Question for you.
    If these are communal in the wild, how does a mother scorpion prevent her babies from being eaten by her community members?

    • @tarantulacollective
      @tarantulacollective  Před 3 lety +1

      I think it is because they have a lot more room to spread out and have their own territory

    I love this video! C. Gracilis was my first species, and it's been so hard to find solid info like this. I have one question in regards to breeding- mine is a female, and I understand that this species can reproduce through parthenogenesis. Does that mean it's possible for my female to become gravid, even though there are no other scorpions in her enclosure?

    • @tarantulacollective
      @tarantulacollective  Před 3 lety +1

      From my understanding, there is only once confirmed example of this and it was from species in Cuba. Outside of that, there has been no officially recorded instances of parthenogenesis in captivity outside of Cuba. So more than likely not, but if it happens, make sure you let people know.

    • @tarantulacollective
      @tarantulacollective  Před 3 lety

      Possibly, but usually you dont want to offer them prey any larger than 2/3rds their size. If you are going to feed them something the same size or larger, probably best to crush the head of the roach so it doesnt hurt your t, and they wont be able to eat the whole thing, so you will need to remove the uneaten prey when they are done.

    I watch all your scorpion videos. I really want a florida bark scorpion but I can't find one for less than like 140$ after shipping. I've got a small collection of scorpions now and I'm lookin to make my collection bigger. I've got little ones so I can't have anything to venomous. I've got a dune, cuban blue and an emperor. Ide like to buy one of your fbs if possible. I handle all my critters and feel like this species would fit me and my wife. I know you're now big on selling but I'm interested in the species and I'm a big fan of yours. Ide love to have half the housings you have. I'm in southern IL so ofcourse ide understand shipping from wherever your at. I hope you see this and acknowledge me. If not I'm still gonna watch your gig. Big fan

    • @tarantulacollective
      @tarantulacollective  Před měsícem

      Thanks for the support dude. And you're right, I am not big on selling. In fact I don't really do it at all. I honestly would hate to part with any animal I am caring for. And packing and shipping live animals is a lot of work and very expensive. A dealer selling FBS would probably only have to charge $50-60 for overnight shipping bc they get a discount rate bc they ship so much. I don't get any discount so it would cost $80 or $90 for me to ship something priority overnight. During the fall and winter, fbs can be hard to find and a little expensive. But once the weather gets warmer they start appearing everywhere. People in Florida are paying exterminators to get rid of them on their property. You can usually find them for sale for $15 or $20 each, maybe even less. If my communal produces more babies this year, then I might be able to help you out, but I am not intentionally breeding them, so there is no guarantee I will have scorplings anytime soon. Check out Arachnid Rarities...he can usually find some fairly cheap. I'd also reach out to microwilderness...he has had the hookup on barknscorpions lately.

    • @tarantulacollective
      @tarantulacollective  Před 3 lety +2

      I'm not expert in venom strength, but if i had to guess...i would say stronger than NW but not as strong as OW. It isn't lethal and won't send you to the hospital unless you have an allergy...it just hurts very bad.
