STUNG by the MOST VENOMOUS SCORPION in the USA! Arizona Bark - Centruroides sculpturatus

- A few weeks ago, I was accidentally stung by a Centruroides sculpturatus, aka the Arizona Bark Scorpion. As soon as I had my wits about me, I grabbed a GoPro and started documenting the effects of the venom. For 72 hours, I filmed myself as the venom worked through my body and described the pain and sensations as best I could. Hopefully, this will serve as a warning to anyone who comes in contact with an Arizona Bark Scorpion. And provide some information and relief for any that has just been stung.

Professional swearing, professional video mate :)
Good on you for documenting the effects and sharing with the community. We all make mistakes and it's important to be transparent in an effort to keep everyone safe and well informed. 🦂💚
Sorry this happened. Thanks for the info. Hopefully never happens again but if you ever get bit/stung by something on that hand again, highly suggest taking the wedding ring off right away. You be shocked how many people end up losing fingers and/or needing to have the ring sawed off. So glad nothing happened, i kept yelling, "take it off! Take it off!" Had to be the first time ive yelled that to another man.
Good advice 😂
I know it’s serious but imagining other people also yelling TAKE IT OFF RICHARD has me laughing
Love how he went from roasting others rolling on the floor to full Koyote Peterson in the second half of the vid :D Good stuff Richard! Many of us are glad you filmed your experience with the sting! Be better soon!
Ouch! I feel your pain, Richard. Did you contact your physician? As a Retired Nurse I would tell you to that just let them know. Anti-venom is given, over slow IV drip. But you won't get that.
Here is something useful to know. The foremost best Emergency Room Doc is located at the hospital in Raleigh at the University of NC Med Center. He is the best Doctor to see for envenomation. Dr. Sean Bush. He used to be in SoCal and had a TV show. There's another one at Wake University they call " the Venom Doc"
Be glad you didn't get antivenom. That stuff will cost you around $50,000.00😮
Very well documented sting case. This is needed information. Well done, sir. Hopefully this video serves as a lesson to other keepers of venomous animals.
Yes! If you ever go anywhere near Phoenix - much needed information.
Super glad your mental lapse ended up being ok. The entire time in my head I was like. Go to the hospital just in case. Different here health care is free 🙈🇨🇦. Thanks for the updates throughout to let us know what you were going through and feeling. I admit I was nervous for you 🙈. Thanks for the awesome channel and the amazing information you provide 🙏
This was an awesome sting report, dude. Very detailed! Thanks for sharing it all.
I got stung by this species over a decade ago. A wild one climbed in my pants overnight (left on the floor) and I put them back on in the morning. It stung me seven times in the back of my upper thigh before I got them off. It SUCKED for a couple of days.
I kept that scorpion as a pet until it died of old age. 😊
Little dude got imprisoned for his crimes
Ditto to getting your ring off anytime you get stung in the hand. I've been stung by Striped Bark Scorpions (different less dangerous species) many times. I've concluded that getting stung in a finger is much more painful than getting stung in your arm or belly (they get in the bed sometimes). Weirdly, I also felt a strange pleasant sensation after the initial pain of being stung wore off. Thanks for doing the video and sharing your suffering with us! The enclosures are cool! :P
Thank for this man, I'm currently sitting on my couch after getting stung at work about 2 hours ago, I was looking for someone to share the pain with. This freaking sucks haha
A lot of this, including the tingling, the pain coming and going, and “smashed it in a car door” and feeling like a burn, reminds me of a recent yellow jacket sting on my hand close to the webbing between my index and middle finger. I can imagine everything you’re describing. Sorry that happened to you my friend! I’m glad you shared so we all know what to expect if we get stung.
I did also get a touch of nausea the first hour or two.
I have been stung by arizona bark scorpions twice in in my life. The first time when I was about 15 maybe hurt like a good wasp sting. The second time I was 23 on the palm of my hand grabbing a log in the middle of the night for a fire. The second time it felt like my my arm was getting struck by lightning every 2-3 minutes. If you touched my arm or even i touched my fingers together it felt like a taser, I could feel the nerves firing all the way up to my shoulder, I had nerve damage for about 2 weeks. No matter how tough you are you can never underestimate nature, at the very least see a professional. Glad you covered this, Arizona has beautiful creatures but are very humbling. Hope you are doing well.
I got stung 2 days ago right under my big toenail. You initial reaction was almost identical accept I cussed for a longer period. Went all the way up my leg into my groin, your description was very accurate but I either had a worse reaction or am less tolerant to the pain because it seemed a little downplayed. Weirdest thing for me was how quickly it went away, it was almost instant and like you said just a little numbness on my toe. I stepped on the suckered walking out to my patio in bare feet. Hope I never experience that again! Interesting thing is now it's over it is hard to comprehend how painful it was at the time. Great documentation!
Painful! You were pretty relaxed about a serious sting. Kudos for not freaking out and only swearing a few times! ;-)
Glad you survived 😊 of course Tarantula Kat was right to worry about the wellbeing of the Scorpion first😉🦂
Yep ,know the feeling well . Got stung on my upper left arm . The pain travelled all the way down to my finger tips .This was 20 yrs ago . The scorpion in question was a small scorpion . Went to hospital and they gave me an antihistamine .
I'm so glad you're ok, Richard! Very informative video documenting your journey thru this sting.❤
That extra energy you had there may very well be rushes of adrenalin. Glad you're okay! Thank you for providing this information. Also, your health is more important than the scorpion, so it would have been nice to receive some sympathy from certain people instead, hah.
That sucks! Sorry that happened to you. Glad you’re ok now 👍
Hello great video information Richard
Glad your ok but also glad you recorded it after
Sorry you got stung...I guess this is the risk we take keeping such interesting animals. I guess we should feel sorry for the scorpion as well as making venom has to be biologically expensive for them and here he had to waste it on a non-threatening primate ;). Very much appreciate that you did this kind of "sting report" as while it's only one data point, it's illuminating seeing how accidents we hope don't happen effect people when they do. Glad you're well after the experience.
Your beard soo cool bro. Tnx for the upload GL and get well soon.
So glad you are ok!
Hope you're feeling much better by now!
Great bite report
I’m so glad you are ok. I can relate to this pain on some level. When I took chemo and they didn’t flush the vein with saline afterwards I had many of the symptoms you spoke of. Shooting pain, burning and aching in my forearm muscles. It’s like it just lays there a seeps through all your tissues and creeps up your arm. After that experience I always remembered to ask for saline lol. ❤
This is such important information. Thanks for sharing. I wish there were more bite and sting reports like this. It is incredibly good information for keepers and I reminder to not become complacent and careless.
In the future use tongs for that kind of thing. I keep deathstalker and fattail scorps and I'm 100% hands off when working with them. I remove their water dishes and move hides with tongs always. Be careful dude. I'm glad you and the scorp are ok.
Sorry you went through all that, Richard! You've definitely added to the body of knowledge with your experience, but let's consider this enough through personal experience! 😉 TaKe care!
Thanks for the info! Great video.
Glad it was helpful!
Awesome Video Tarantula Collective and i am glad that you are alright after being stung by that scorpion i hope you are well Tarantula Collective.
I am! thanks
I've been stung by a scorpion here in Kansas. Hurts just like you described. What is weird is that there was no swelling like with a bee or wasp, and the only red was a small injection site. But man ... hurt like putting my finger on an anvil and smacking it with a 🔨. Great video and great documentation. 👍🏼👍🏼
Took it like a champ. Glad you survived. 🎉
Ouch!!!....glad you're ok now 🙂
Glad you’re ok. I love Tarantula Kat. 😂Worrying about the scorpion first.
So Glad you followed through to the end !! I for one was scared for you !!
What a experience for you 😳😳😳
Interesting video Richard documenting this does help with the study of the Invert/Animal in question thanks for sharing 😉👌
AHH! That really sucks but thanks for sharing! And thanks for not falling on the ground and crying like your body was getting ripped apart. That's disturbing. LOL! Happy Halloween!
Happy Halloween to you Richard
Glad nothing horrible happened. We are all glad that you're still with us and aren't allergic to their venom. I personally enjoy your videos and would hate for there to be no more of them. You offer a lot of very well researched and thoughtful information.
I'm glad your Ok.
DUDE. I’m so sorry, Richard!!! That’s insane
I kept these scorpions and this is my fave vid. So glad u documented!
Awesome documentation man! Good on you for sticking through it and promoting these efforts of the pet trade to conduct some citizen science. Glad you're alright!
Happy birthday 🎉
Lived in AZ for 3 years without seeing a scorpion. My fourth year got stung by these lil guys 3 different times in my kitchen. Didn't know how bad the venom was so just went to rugby practice despite the 2nd encounter my leg being kinda numb. 3rd time I called out because the effects were spanning all the way up my leg and getting close to organs.
I was a baby when my baby Asian forest scorpion stung me. You’re so strong 😂
My army buddy died after got bitten by a centipede in the head while in an exercise area. He's only 21 years old then, 1982. Don't get stung by either a scorpion or a centipede.
Living in Phoenix, I have ran into the little bastards (Arizona Bark Scorpion). I have yet to be "stung" by one. They are a huge pain in the rear for those who live in this area. The crazy thing is that for most they either get tons of them, or they never see any. They are notorious for being difficult to get rid of if your home gets infested. The best way to get rid of them is to kill their food sources. I was surprised that you bothered getting any of these specific species. Of course they are not "aggressive", but they rarely hesitate to use their stingers.
I was wondering what size tank you would recommend for a dominican sp purple beauty brideater.
holy shit balls! glad you're okay😬
I'm really glad that your alright Richard and hopefully next time you'll check with a paint brush to make sure their not there.
Richard, is now known as ,SCORPION! 🦂, from the Mortal Kombat game. Lol 😂. He's gonna start shooting vermon, from his wrist, like Spiderman. Lol 😂
😂.
Damn!! 😲. 😢. Hey, on a real serious note. Really, really hope that you're ok. Thanks for documenting your whole experience from being stung by your scorpion, really appreciate this, telling us about the real experience of what it actually really feels like to be stung accidentally by, a venomous scorpion.
Hope you Get better soon.😢❤
Your scorpion just wanted to wish you a happy Halloween
Thank you so much for sharing. I’m in Texas and these have been bad. I’ve been stung once but wasn’t too bad. Just stung this evening and exactly as you said it felt like a hot needle going straight through my big toe. I used advice online and had my husband clean with soapy water, iced and elevated (to keep venom from spreading) and hour in and it still hurts but no where near the pain you continued to happen. But again it’s been maybe 1.5 hrs…. Thank you so much for sharing!!!!
While I have zero interest in getting stung, this reminded me that I would love to have a pet scorpion 😂 I’ll probably go for an emperor scorpion when I do get one though.
Happy Halloween!🎃
Details about the new tarantula species
Now, let’s dive into the discoveries in more detail. Reflecting the beautiful landscapes and dense vegetation of the Colombian Pacific coast, researchers named the newly found entity Ummidia solana after the municipality where they discovered it. This marks the first record of the Ummidia genus within the Chocó Biogeographic Region.
The researchers named the entity Melloina pacifica after the Colombian Pacific region it inhabits. This is the first described species of the Melloina genus in Colombia.
I hope you are going to be ok soon!
I just read the title and I screamed. I know two people who were visiting Phoenix and got stung by those critters (one in his bed in a hotel) and both wound up in the ER. They're all over that area. No thanx.
This is why im very conscientious when dealing with the fun old world T's in my shop. Screw getting bit or stung
I don't remember hearing this but did you do anything ameliorative right after being stung? Like, cold compress, ibuprofen, etc?
Please take care! We appreciate your following up!
It’s interesting, you could watch this video and get a really accurate (if vague) idea of where the nerves run up the arm.
Listening to your description it sounds like the symptons largely followed the distribution of the median nerve, which I guess makes sense with a sodium channel opening vemon. I wonder if you would take a look at a diagram of the median nerve distribution in the hand and see if it does indeed line up with where you felt the effects?
fun level 0 out of 10? thats a suprise.
i am glad you recovert well. thanks for sharing this experience.
I'm looking for information on deathstalker scorpions housing like can you keep them with other scorpions but I can't find anything would you possibly be able to help
Well since you're posting this video, I'm going to assume that you survived... Or you're posting this from beyond the grave, which is a pretty badass move to do on Halloween.
I'm glad you're okay.
Glad you’re doing well and everything was good. I’m in wv as well and all we worry about are black widows and brown recluse, then the occasional rattlesnake.
Did any over the counter pain relievers help? ibuprofen or Tylenol?
I had a very similar experience. Exact same description of symptoms 😢
Thank you for getting stung for content 💛
Everybody reacts to venom different but am happy you do oké. Greetings from the Netherlands 👍
Yeah we have Anascorp in most EDs here in AZ. I'm a PICU Nurse and we used to have to sedate kids and put them on ventilators regularly before that was developed. Now they just get that in the ED and go home. I've been stung once and yeah it sucks but it's over in a day pretty much.
This is why I don't mess with scorpion
Are you going to turn into scorpion man? 😂. Very interesting video.
Well Richard, they say red heads feel more pain🤔😂 Interesting video. I keep bark scorpions sometimes and this makes me think I don’t want to know what it feels like to get stung. Thanks for all the good info.
I'm glad it's not your Deathstalker
Late to the party on this but I live in Arizona and I quite literally know your pain. Bark scorpions are fascinating and devilish little buggers. They can compress and contort their bodies to slip through the narrowest spaces you would typically never even notice. They also have the ability to scale glass. If you have a determined bark scorpion there is literally nowhere you can go to escape from it.
Fortunately/unfortunately they tend to be territorial. So if you have a bark scorpion problem in your home/workplace you’re… kinda outta luck. If you don’t, you’re generally pretty safe. You might encounter a wanderer every now and then but you don’t have much to worry about.
Worked in a pharmacy for a number of years that backed up onto undeveloped desert scrubland and almost everyone who worked there had an encounter at least once. Usually the shooting pain and numbness in alternating waves was the worst it got, but a couple times there was flu-like symptoms.
Haven’t known anyone that’s gotten the anti venom, maybe living here we are too proud/stupid to do the smart thing.
😮 omg are you ok shit that must of hurt id go to the hospital right away
Is the beard oil line with The Bearded Bastard? That would be awesome! My fiancé loves their stuff. 🔥
And awesome with how you’re handling the situation and explaining everything. 🙌🏼
Fun video! Let's do an H. Mac next!
Hey Rich glad your on the mend dude , Just goes to show that no matter how much experiance you have these things still happen, I know it’s not much comfort to know but this experience with the A Bark Scorpion may help others with the process of what to expect with the accidental invenomation , But despite your coyote experiance Rich really glad your on the mend,Take care bud ANDY.
Yeahhhhhh been waiting for this shit hahahah hope ur feeling better
I agree with the people saying that it's really good u documented it Bec the reality is a lot of people may not be able to get the antivenin and the reality is we all make mistakes good to see u showing it and how it affected u and also ty for not dramatizing it
I would have instantly taken off my ring incase the hand swelling… good video documentation of the sting
Oh my gosh! That is no fun!
My American Bully got stung by a Bark Scorpion when we first moved to Las Vegas a couple of years ago. She took it like a champ. Drooled all over the place but she never whined, I think I gave her some Baby Benadryl and it helped her a bit.
(PS and I feel your pain, bother! I got stung by two Black Widows in the same day within an hour of each other when I was working construction. No bueno!)
Best thing I can recommend is Benadryl for the swelling and itching. Also something for the swelling. I've been stung by the Texas bark scorpion and the sting smarts and does what the Arizona bark scorpion sting does.
Richard please be careful 🎉
Glad you made it through without antivenom. I know your pain. Over the summer I got bit by a brown recluse. Most of the time you’re fine. But I was not. Turns out I got bit by a Chilean recluse that got transported on a piece of furniture my friend got delivered. I went through hell. Since that happened every spider I see that looks like a recluse I get ptsd and go ape shit on it.
Looks like the sting works to drive away predators huh? LOL❤❤
The start of the video gives me “A Christmas Story” dad vibes😂
That how the Deathstalker sting was for me. But three days of pain.
I recently got my first striped bark scorpion, I don't plan on finding out what their stings are like.
A bit off topic, but it’s about pain from venom. I’ve never tangled with one of these little dinosaurs, but I got stung (over and over), bitten, cursed out (they employ all this; I think a couple of them even flipped me off) by I’m guessing approximately 50 to 60 yellow jackets within 10 or 12 seconds. I was moving a heavy patio planter and they’d nested in the bottom of the soil using the side drain holes for an entrance. They swarmed me before I knew what was happening, chased me all the way around the house where I ran into my garage. Being in that semi-interior space seemed to disorient them and they called off the attack. That was a lot of initial pain but my adrenalin was so high it masked it, I’m sure. Vicious little critters they are, and this was the fall of the year which is when they’re at their most dangerous. Beyond the pain my body handled it well, just a slightly elevated heart rate and minor sort of hyperventlating , but 75mg of Benadryl and I was fine. I’m slightly curious how all that would compare to this scorpion but I don’t intend to find out firsthand. If you were to poke a stick at a yellow jacket nest, you could solve the mystery.
It just goes to show how much people's response to pain differs substantially.
I deal with desert scorpions all the time, keep them as pets usually, I'm down to one scorpion right now and that happens to be the Arizona bark scorpion. Living here is sometimes a scorpion party in the desert.
Omg lol So, firstly, im really glad you're ok and thanks so much for sharing your story. Secondly... your finger in the outlet story. 🤣 I thought that was only like... one of those myths or old wives tales that parents would say, that never actually happened lol I guess I should give more credit to those old wives tales hahaha I appreciate you 💗
Omg dude I've been yelling at my phone telling you to see a Dr! 😮
