- This week I tell you all about how I care for, set up, and feed my Asian Forest Scorpion. Whether you have a Heterometrus spinifer, Heterometrus petersii, Heterometrus silenus or Heterometrus longimanus...the care and husbandry for this scorpion is identical.

You have officially covered all the invertebrates I have.
Lmao same
Same
@Frederick Tadeo we surely dont
Same aha
I have the Asian Forest scorpion and I named her Zoey. She's in a bioactive enclosure with jungle mix. I put a ounce of sliced pumpkin in there once ever other week, to feed the springtails and Isopods. It helps maintain their population and in turn they keep mold and decaying matter under control.
Sounds perfect
Are there any other fruits or vegetables that you can use to replicate an environment like this?
@@BeffLorgStay away from berries as the seeds in them could sprout and apple seeds contain a little cyanide so take seeds out of apples. What you want is a bit of Banana peels, apple mushroom stems who whole mushrooms of any edible some pumpkin and a little bit of spinach chopped up for a thriving isopod tank.
Hey can you make a vid showing us. Sounds very cool!!!
Do you still feed her crickets or does she just eat some isopods when she gets hungry?
Asian forest scorpions got me into the hobby a few months ago
Also do not keep them communally, it’s like a ticking time bomb they are gonna eventually get eaten. I had a female and a smaller male with my large male peggy. Peggy decided to eat them one day, it sucks make sure they are the same size I guess? Just know it’s very risky and eventually you are gonna run into some cannibalism problems probably, they can’t really tell a difference so you can’t really blame them.
My AFS has a huge attitude problem haha. Every time I mist her enclosure she gives me a pose.
Same here
Better than having a pet rock gahaha
I have one named General Pinchers. She has since blessed me with approximately 12 grand-scorps. It’s getting close to time to find them some homes. ❤️
My worst nightmare
My first scorpion was an asian forest scorpion, ive had him for a month and a half now.
Same
Same lol
Dude I had mine for a month. I think it’s a female
had mine since christmas now so like 9 and I’m pretty sure it’s a dude
You still got em ? I just got one and I held it the first day.
I keep two of these communally. I love how they cuddle together in their burrow. Would be separating them once I rehouse them, tho. They would be perfect for my first attempt at a bioactive enclosure! Thanks for the care guide, Richard!
I picked one up that turned out to be Heterometrus Cyaneus, which is absolutely identical in almost all ways to the other species in the genus, except that it's apparently semi arboreal. Given the fact that mine has taken up climbing on the ivy in the enclosure and putting up threat displays in what I assume is intended as a giant middle finger to science for saying the Heterometrus genus is fossorial.
Gonna be upgrading her to a 10 gallon once she molts, but for now she's happy as a 3rd instar in a little 3 gallon Zoo Med Creatures vertical enclosure I got for half price at Petco that she shares with her pet dubia roach (it's... a very strange situation. That little roach was supposed to be food, but she won't eat it. She'll even defend it from the crickets and eat THEM instead. I cannot, for the life of me, explain why she does what she does)
I'd love to hear more on this relationship.
Dude that's awesome! Any updates!
It must get so tiring lugging around those massive claws 24/7 🦂💪🏻
You all probably dont care at all but does anyone know a way to get back into an Instagram account??
I somehow lost my account password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me
@Tripp Giovanni instablaster ;)
@Kingsley Mohammed I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm trying it out now.
Takes quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
@Kingsley Mohammed it worked and I finally got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thank you so much, you saved my account :D
@@trippgiovanni6581 glad to hear you were able to get it back. Sorry I didn't see your initial comment/question for whatever reason xx
Picked up an Asian Forest Scorpion today. He is cool! Appreciate this video. Keep up the great work!
Do you have any suggestions where to get one?
@@tater_tot4190I know I'm not the original poster but I just bought mine at Petsmart
@@heavensgate136 Same
I just got mine last week and i must say this has been really helpful! Thanks again Rich!keep up the good work
Your editing is FREAKING phenomenal. Plus great zoom shots.
Thanks for the reptile collab videos! I added my first Scorpion to the collection today! Asian Forest Scorpion! After watching this video I checked and mine has the black sting also! Appreciate your help and knowledge! I know this enclosure is perfect now!🤜🤛
I love the scorpion care videos! I have never seen one on an Opistophthalmus glabrifrons aka Hissing scorpion. It is one if my favorites in my collection, plus it would be cool to see it through your awesome lens.
Thank you for your hard work and the quality you produce!
Thank YOU for your kind words and taking the time to watch!
I switched to keeping big claw scorpions recently from androctonus and centruroides and they’re such rewarding little guys. I like being able to actually reach my hands into their enclosure to hand feed them. 😂
Yay! Much anticipated! Thanks Richard! 😁😁🦂🦂🦂🦂🕷🕷🕷
This is awesome! Totally requested a scorp intro video on the FB group. Great video!
Randomly picked up a pregnant Asian forest scorpion at an expo this weekend and it makes me so thankful for your videos.
There's definitely something to be said for Emperor scorps, but... Black is beautiful. There is just something so special about these.
Thank you for getting me into the hobby, I’m getting my first scorpions and tarantula soon
Ok 1st h.spinifer and h.longimanus are not misidentified as emperors they are more rare but yes h.silenus will be sold under those three names (in the US hobby trade i should say)
2nd, h.spinifer and h.longimanus again also will have colored telson's just like emperors
3rd, alot of AFS also have granulated claws like emperors like C.Tristis or g.swammerdami etc but the most commonly named ones (the ones spoken about in the vid) will have way smoother claws
4th i don't recommend isopods with your inverts as they can take advantage and eat your animal but springtails ive never seen any problems with.
But nothing less this was a truly amazing video the care tips were really good keep it up man!
I'm very happy that you mentioned the small morphological differences such as the claws and colour of the telson. They may be subtle, but they do help in identifying at least the genus. I had a sub-adult P. imperator during my first year of invert keeping. It became a pet hole, so I eventually tired of it. Instead of dropping it off at the pet shop I bought it, I did better : I donated to an Insectarium. I knew it would fare much better there. I haven't owned a scorpion in over a decade and I wouldn't want something that burrows. So that marks off anything Pandinus/Heterometrus/Hadrurus. Wouldn't feel comfortable with medically significant species either, so all Buthidae are crossed off. Leaves me with very few and less popular options such as Smeringurus mesaensis or Paravaejovis spinigerus.
For the time being, I'm perfectly content with just a handful of Brachypelma, Grammostola and Tliltocatl, which are always out on display. Still need to acquire at least one US native Aphonopelma down the road to really consider my small collection complete. Stay safe and thanks for sharing :)
how have i not seen your channel such pro advice and so much quality and time in your videos
Beautiful footage! This was the second species of scorpion I ever owned and I really enjoy keeping them
Ive been waiting for this 🙌🙌
I’m seriously considering getting one of these!! They look amazing!!
Here for these Amazing vids and Facts! Always awesome to see this close
So far we have 7 t.s, 1 pac man frog, 1 bearded dragon and today my ol man is bringing home one of these amazing creatures! Super stoked. Thanks for the helpful tips
I got my scorpion back in September I’ve had it over a year now and it’s nice to come by these videos just to make sure I’m doing things correctly
Awesome video. Just brought mine home today. Excited to get into the hobby
Nice video! Thanks for explaining the visual differences between the Asian forest scorpion and Emperor scorpion. I was a little confused about that 😋
Awesome, appreciate the care video. Got our first scorpion, an H. Spinifer coming from KF Inverts on Wednesday as a freebie with our order.
Always fun to watch my friend
I see 100K. Subs coming very quickly my CZcams creator friend! 🤔😉😇 Great video like usual!😎😬
First view on this channel and now hooked. Great stuff my dude
hello great video Richard
Awesome! Loved the footage!
Thank you my friend!
I really like your care sheet vids, I have saved some as notes for me to look up whenever I want to review species specific care. Keep up the good work! Also, can you make a care sheet video about deathstalker scorpions?
Great as always
I would really like to see a mantis care video! That would be awesome!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Leaving a comment on my favorite video because Viva Scorpies!
Awesome camera work and props for making the focus of your filming the scorpion and not your face like so many other youtubers.
Thanks for another awesome care and husbandry video Richard! I just picked up my first H. longimanus today! Super excited to get this little thing roaming around the habitat. Do you recommend certain plants that do well in the humid, low light environment? I see you have a pothos and what looks like a succulent of some type in your habitat. Have they been able to thrive?
Thanks again!
Hi friend! About 5 weeks ago, I found your channel after buying my 1st Asian Forest Scorpion, Pink Toe, and Mexican Red Knee Tarantulas.
My AFS was super fat when I got him. Being a novice, I didn't think much of it. I just thought he was well fed. I also named him Mr. Chauncey Clamps.
Well, I was served a dose of humility this morning when I discovered HE is actually a SHE.
My lady gave birth to a brood of baby scorplings last night. Needless to say, I was quite surprised. This was unexpected at best, and I'm now furiously doing research on how to care for her and the brood. I can't keep them all, maaaaybe 1. However, I'm on the fence with what to do with the others.
I live in Anchorage, Alaska, so shipping, imo, is out of the question since idk wtf I'm doing, and I don't trust the postal service to keep them safe. Additionally, shipping overnight via FedEx or UPS is ungodly expensive and will cost more than they are worth.
Now, my local PetSmart has taken donations of scorpions in the past. However, I respect your advice I caught (after the fact, of course) that impulse buying invertebrates only fuels the sales of them even further. Which as you mentioned in a previous video, they are often kept in subpar conditions/enclosures.
On the other hand, I could hold off rehoming until August of this summer as we are having a 2nd Exotics and Reptiles Expo in a city about 50 miles north of my location.
What tips/thoughts/advice/feedback do you have in a situation like mine? I want to do the right thing here.
Sincerely,
"I will never assume a living creature's gender again just because they're not human"
omg earliest i've been , i've been waiting for asian forest scorpions guide 😍, one of the few arachnids i really want !
Hope you enjoyed it!
i enjoy all of the content you put out ! you're one of the few scorpion / tarantula channels my little siblings enjoy watching. because "they're all so pretty"
Their care is alot similar to emperor scorpion care
Love the Asian forest! I have one called Perseus! Best looking scorpion in my opinion although others disagree! Love the content man thanks for all the tips! I came into the hobby this year and I’m 43 tarantulas, 4 scorpions and a vinegaroon up 😂😂
I just got my first asain forest scorpion today and im so glad to have bought him i cant wait to see it when its big
Thanks for the video. Would you recommend any specific plants for a bioactive scorpion enclosure? Also, are isopods a good idea with scorpions and tarantulas? Thanks again and I look forward to your videos. 🦂🕷
Excellent!! Watching from that ferry on the Irish Sea!🏴
thanks for the info man! I'm keeping my first AFS tommorow
No problem!! They are an awesome species!
Another spectacular video !
Thanks....you are too kind...but don't stop...lol
Thanks,I purchased one of these around 4 months ago and I guess I was doing some things wrong, such as putting the heater under the tank and soaking the soil. Thanks you helped me alot!
Getting a female Heterometrus spinifer tomorrow! Got her enclosure today I'm so excited!
Great video
I have two H. cyaneus. They are a bit feisty but it's all show. They will raise their claws at you but then let you nudge them onto your hand. When they realise you called their bluff they calm down pretty quick and just sit on your hand and chill.
Asian Forest Scorpion!!!!!!!!
Great species i currently have 11 of them one adult female and 10 of her scorpilings that are at 3rd instar i think there a little over an inch long ive been keeping them in 16 oz tubs in an incubator there all doing great such fiesty personalities just like thier mom i would reccomend them to any keeper they make great pets very low maintanence just like tatantulas though i have found that keeping them in a range of 80 to 85 degrees can make them more active just an obsevation of mine anyway great video looking forward to the next one
They're so cool 😍
Richard as I have owned scorpions before, but as a wise man said (you) "always research" so as i start scrolling CZcams because I haven't owned a scorpion in some time, hoping I find one of your videos and so glad and thankful I did, you are my go to on arachnids,
Nice video
SUPER COOL!!!!
Hey brother,🤙🏽got one yesterday absolutely love it! Quick questions... what plant is that in the background, looks like pathos and how can i tell the sex. I live in Miami do you think I’ll need a heating pad its right by the sliding glass door on a drawing desk, Thanks these vids are awesome my dude be safe!🤟🏽✌🏽
Iv been wanting a scorpion forever and found one of these guys at pet smart for only 20 bucks in super excited little Scorpio will be mine!!!
Just got my first Asian forest scorpion 2 weeks ago. Thanks for the video!!
Hope you enjoy it!
I'd like to see a care guide on keeping scorplings. I've got two Androctonus coming to me in Jan from Fear Not and I'm thinking smaller enclosures inside a 10 gallon with a heating pad/thermostat to keep them comfortable (and a second layer of escape proofing).
Cool scorpion 🦂 Pet
Well done if I ever get a scorpion it will be Emporer or the Asian forest. I like the looks of them both and sounds like the care would be the same. Love learning about different specie.🦂🕷
GOD BLESS 😀💖👍
Same! Videos like these make me wanna get a scorpion
I'm a tarantula keeper and have been watching your vids for a long time, I'm here because I just bought my first Scorpion today, it's an Asian forest as far as I know but it's claws are very long out in front, it's only a baby her name for now is Poppy
I just got mine a week ago. I call it Dwayne. It’s really active, I had some extra hides and decor and I find it in a different hides at different times a day.
Very cool
Thanks for making this video I have 2 emperor scorpion babies that I wasn't 100% sure they were labeled correctly from the pet store but the part you talked about the stinger color and bumpy claws closed that case lol...
I was planning on getting a S. Gigantia Centipede and I was wondering if you had experience with them and could make a video on them? Thanks!
My first and only scorpion is a h.petersii, her name is nightmare because she hates everything, she hasn’t been eating much but has been getting bigger over the past 5 months, I got her in July, so I think she is pregnant because the seller said she was wild-caught
Hey! Thank you!!
Nice pet man...
I dunno what it is but your voice is so....soothing lol
my AFS is around 3 1/2 inches, and it went off food for about 3 months, scared the hell out of me ,it's eating fine now
I'm having the same exact experience with my AFS. It has only eaten once since I obtained it months ago. I would be more worried, but previous experience with Tarantulas has taught me that its nothing abnormal for arachnids.
My AFS alos eat just at the beginning as I got it and he is refusing food for the last two months. I'm glad to hear that I am not the only one having this problem. Greetings from Vienna
Great video! ❤
Looking to get one someday when its all set up, but I have a question..
I see that yours have no top lid ?
What would you recommend for a top lid and what kind of lights? Just normal daylight or something within the lid as lights?
Thank you ! 😄
Nice and helpfull video , could you make a care and husbandry video for the Ephebopus Cyanognathus
Giant vinegaroon, I have one and they're great, along with the Asian Forest. the dairy cow and dwarf purple isopods make a great clean up crew and secondary food source. No mites and mold either.
hey man i got a G Acteon ido not see alot of videos or indepth anything about them online anywhere im hoping by leaving this comment the goat of tarantula keeping will respond
Someone just surrendered theirs to us. Of course I took it home. Once again, you have delivered all the info I need.
A month back I got a 4 month old female Heterometrus laoticus and she was such a joy that I just got a pair of juvenile, almost mature Heterometrus laoticus and I love them so much already!! The baby one is called Kristin, and the pair's names are Atropa (f) (after the deadly nightshade) and Onyx (m)!!
great set up👍🥸
Glad you like it
Great information.
They are however not all the same. A new comprehensive study has resulted in a major revision of the “Asian Forest Scorpion” family (Heterometridae). One very interesting find is that the species formerly named Heterometrus cyaneus is only distantly related to the more common species in the hobby and now assigned to its own genus: Javanimetrus (as J. cyaneus). The paper is called: Systematic Revision of the Asian Forest Scorpions (Heterometridae), Revised Suprageneric Classification of Scorpionidae and Revalidation of Rugodentidae
just ordered a asian forest scorpion and a pixie frog thankyou for the information!
I love my H. laoticus 🥰 it was tiny when I got it but is growing and eats like a champ. Have to watch that it‘s not overweight 😂 but it’s not docile or nice, it has an attitude problem... I made the mistake to try it keeping communally with its sibling. Unfortunately they started to fight and the smaller one died 😢 like you, I don’t recommend to keep them in a group.
I have 10 scorplings of the very small Euscorpius italicus to raise now. When they’re adults, I‘ll build them a big communal enclosure, with a stone wall, like the natural habitat they live in.
On the other hand, I also have a P. imperator and it’s a bit calmer. But I don’t handle my scorps or tarantulas.
I don’t have heat pads, as the room temperature is always enough for them. They are active and eating well.
i had 2 asian forest scorpions and they were together always and didnt have a giant place but they lived together till the end they never had really a prolem and ofc i took one out when the other shedded but aftera coupleof day they were together agian i oved them both and i dont know why but i had a sort bond with them that made me able topet them and do anything without them doing a thing they were realy amazing pets
I just got an asian forest scorpion. I bought leather gloves so when i pick it up it doesnt pinch or sting me, although this is probably overkill.
So far he hasnt tried to pinch or sting and ive had him out 3 times so far. I am getting more used to them for sure, they are awesome creatures.
CAPTAIN REDBEARD!!!
I'm in Singapore and we have this one Hterometrus sp. individual that is pretty much our buddy because we know where its burrow is so when we go herping we're like lmao let's visit it. There's also a Selenocosmia sp. (not the more common P. inermis!) whose burrow we know the location of, and that was the T (and also a Barychelidae that we once saw) that got me into tarantulas this year. So on nights we get skunked, at least we have our pals the scorpion and the tarantula.
I’m really looking forward to getting my next Buddy. I had one named Angel for 6 years 😭 I got him from my bartender 😂 he was about 9 months old when I took his care over. I miss having him all the time. Next year when I move into a better house I’ll be able to provide a good enclosure for one.
Hey there, i have around 30 scorpions, i live in Thailand, i even named my new bar after them, Scorpion Bar Chiang Mai. Cheers
This is a niche request, but I, and all other beetle lovers would love if you made a video on any rhino or stag beetle.
Wanting to get a scorpion in a few months and this video was very helpful. Any chance you could make a video on just a complete tank setup (I have 20 gal long) am I supposed to give them lighting or natural light. I want this thing to have as perfect of a environment as I'm capable of giving it
Cery informative and proffesional video! Thank you! Can i ask. Is it true that this scorpions doesn’t need a mate to reproduce? Are they parthenogenic? Thank you
thank you!!
My Asian Scorpion, Chef, just gave birth to a litter of 24. Figuring out how to give the most of them the best shot at living and vibing.
I have an Asian Forest Scorpion Ive found them to be very shy she comes out sometimes at night but shed rater burrow. Shes beautiful when she appears !!!!
Man that is crazy you made this I just got one today
that is wild
The video was very helpful thank you for sharing
