    I've built a few humidors before. Its a super fun project! One thing I would suggest is finding a way to make the door air tight. Attaching strips of spanish cedar to the door frame and obviously lining those strips up with the box is a good way to do it. Thats how I did it when I made one of these. Also, finishing the inside of the box is a pretty big no no. You want the wood to be able to breath, expand and contract, and absorb moisture. Adding any oil to the inside might keep those things from happening. You also don't want to risk adding any strange flavors to the cigars.

    Very Nice job on the humidor, one thing though you should've made slits or openings at the bottom of each shelf from left to right to allow the humidity to be distributed evenly from one level to the next. Great job!

    Your work is excellent, however I have one comment.................
    The placement of your fingers ever so closely to the table saws blade, in my opinion is an extreme unwarranted risk. Make yourself several different style of push sticks. I'd rather sacrifice a few push sticks than my fingers.

    Nice video, I don't know if it was addressed below concerning the hinges and the interference with the heads of the screws preventing the door from closing. You can scribe a line around the hinges with a razor knife the remove the wood with a chisel and that will let the hinges recess into the door and cabinet and allowing the door to close. Sorry if it was mentioned already.. One question tho. I am wanting to build one. How good does the humidor doo with maintaining humidity and temp with all the glass?

      I just finished my humidor. Some things I learned. I lined humidor with polyethylene sheeting between Spanish cedar and exterior wood. Works awesome my humidity rarely moves 1/2 percentage point from set point. Also I have Spanish cedar shelves and all lining is same. Yes I know it is expensive but is worth it. I found that you can get 1” thick Spanish cedar for the same price as 1/4” cedar at specialty wood stores. Sucks up a lot of moisture which re-humidifies once you close humidor. Took about two weeks to condition. Also avoid a cabinet door that swings this pumps in a lot of outside air that now needs to be humidified. I used a sliding door that slides open from the side. I sealed around the slide with silicon sealing strips. I dado’d in a slot on top side and bottom to allow a sliding fit for my window. I also bought some battery powered led lights from Amazon that can be turned on with remote control. Really illuminates cigars well so you can see what you want before you open to take it out. My two cents.

    Really nice job on the video. You did an excellent job of explaining what you were doing with each part of the build. As mentioned, the inside of the humidor should remain bare Spanish cedar. Also, I would have used wooden pegs instead of screws...it just would have added to the quality. You also could have used either miter joints or dovetail joints for that little extra "quality" feature. The "drawers" could probably have had slotted or drilled bottoms to allow for better humidification circulation within the cabinet. I don't mean to sound like I'm picking the build apart, just giving tips, based on my knowledge of woodworking and of cigars.
    Curious...what happened to the nice half-round detail from the front of the door? It didn't make it to the finished product.

    When cutting glass use a thinner straight edge like a drywall square. When you start your cut keep even pressure. If you start your cut heavy finish heavy and vise-a-versa (it doesn't take a bunch of pressure). It also helps to dip the stem in mineral spurts before cutting. Invest in a better stem if you'll be cutting a lot of glass those green ones are terrible. Just some advice, great video.

  • @DannoCrutch
    @DannoCrutch Před 10 lety

    Glass cutting is a challenge to learn to do properly. I couldn't tell if you lubricated the wheel prior to each cut. That helps keep the wheel moving nicely. I also couldn't tell if you were starting your break on the end of the line you finished with. i.e., start the cut a hair off the one edge, score the glass, and the side of the glass where you finished your score is where you apply the break pressure. I think the "hardest" thing I had to learn was keeping the cutter perfectly perpendicular to the glass. Being very comfortable and balanced in posture lends to that, quite a bit.

    Very nicely done but you need a few things. I'd use a router to create air slats in the drawers for humidity to pass through or you'll have to adjust your cigars constantly. You also need to use sure seal on the doors or it wont hold any humidity.
    Every hole you drilled in non cedar wood needs to be sealed or your wood will warp.
    Otherwise, nicely done.

    It must be a nightmare to keep a constant humidity within the case. Some deisgn changes to incorporate, within the grooves for the glass sides cut weather striping to place in the groove as an insulator. The door should also have a gasket to insulate. gluing your joinery and omitting screws is a better option in this design style. Its an excellent design but needs improvement and I hope on the next one you will consider my input.

    Your work is lovely but I would encourage two things. The first is a better design to avoid some of the problems you had, remember measure twice cut once, it's a general idea that must be applied to all woodwork. I would encourage you to learn basic technical drawing, nothing fancy just simple woodworking schematics.
    And as others have said, take care around your tools, especially witht he table saw, push sticks are your friends.

    Manufactures put glass tops and sides in humidors because glass is much cheaper than wood. Only problem is, glass is bad for cigars. For at least three reasons. First, it removes the interior cedar surfaces needed to regulate and stabilize the level of humidity. Second, variations in light causes fluctuations in temperature; especially if it's a natural source of light. Third, light is bad for tobacco at rest. UV light plays hell with the oils in the wrapper and kills the beneficial bacteria needed for the ageing process.
    And let me add a fourth reason. Only a chump displays his cigars for cigar moochers to see. If you have an Opus X in there, the moocher will want the Opus X and pout if you give him a $2 stick.

      +Leon Davis True but than this would not be a humidor display case it would be a giant cigar box instead of what he was shooting for.

      Lee Schlanger You put your finger on it: "display case".
      I'm an amateur torcedor and I would never, in a million years, put my creations in something like this.
      All my cigars reside in a closet in three NewAir coolers: aging in the dark. Under lock and key.
      But the display case idea might be just the thing for cigar mooches. I can roll a cigar that will knock you on your ass. Pure low-grade ligero and 100% nasty. In a fancy Connecticut wrapper so you'd never suspect you're smoking a turd.
      I hate cigar mooches. They'll take one, and three more "for later".
      "Smoke this, asshole."

      Lol good call I live in CT and I literally watch it grow over the summer you can wrap just about anything in that wrapper and make it a good smoke.

      Lee Schlanger Now that must be something to see. Some of the leaves I get are yuge. Over 18" long...some as big as 22"...very impressive.

      Definitely do not score the glass on both sides. Score it Once with consistent pressure the entire pass.

    You didn't explain why the arch top of the door wasn't finished into the final product. F- for this mistake :) No really, cool video and thanks!

      lol yea i forgot to add that part to the video but the reason was that the wood was to think and was way to big for the space i allowed for the door, i tried planing it down but it snapped were the groove was cut... thank you!

    • @HaikuAutomation
      @HaikuAutomation Před 10 lety

      That is what I figured, good to know for sure. I figured the wood would have warped unless you had maybe drilled through the glass and wood and pinned it in multiple places, and then laminated over to cover the dowel pins. Too much work and honestly your resulted finished project looks very good as it is.
