Cigar Humidor & Whiskey Cabinet Dove Tail Build

  • I finally made the time to build something for myself. I've made so many whiskey cabinets for other people, time to do one for myself, plus I needed a bigger humidor for all my cigars. These cabinets are made from Ash and Walnut. Just over 1.25 inches thick. The dovetails aren't that impressive, but it still turned out alright. Seeing videos like this makes me wish our school systems gave more freedom to explore. I was a terrific brass musician. But having to pick between music, which I was already good at, and new things likes shop classes for woods and metal makes me feel like a lot of people get robbed of finding things they could be passionate about. I haven't played in 15 years, but I imagine building things like this could have been something I would have continued to pursue. It would have been nice to have at least had more opportunities to dip our toes in things outside standardized courses. Thank you for documenting and sharing your work with the world.

      yea it's way easier than having to build a jig but the down side is that if you need to shave the door down to reverse fit it, then it can be problematic because of how the splines are set in on a curved cut.

    Really wish you put a slab on the back and just routed out a recess for your mounting. That rear panel doesn't seem sealed and will slowly let out humidity unless it has and air tight seal on the wall.

    • @KeimpieceCarpentry
      @KeimpieceCarpentry  Před měsícem +1

      You are correct. I did run a bead of silicone around the perimeter to seal it.

  • @ZebraMedic35
    @ZebraMedic35 Před 9 měsíci +1

    I think it's nicely done sir. Like someone else mentioned, box joints? I might suggest a hollow silicone tube around the inside of the door to ensure a good seal?

    • @KeimpieceCarpentry
      @KeimpieceCarpentry  Před 9 měsíci

      I've done box joints on whiskey cabinets before, they look great, but for this one I wanted to try something new and challenging. Box joints are very easy....once you build a nice jig and it's perfectly dialed in. I ended up putting silicone inside, which was a HUGE MISTAKE! Silicone really stinks and even after letting it air out a few days it still have a gross silicone odor. Luckily I can taste it in the cigars but you can definitely smell it when you open the door. When I get some time I'd like to gut the inside and add a new lining. Then use thin weather stripping to seal it.
