In this woodworking project video I build and setup up a humidor. Made from Spanish cedar, maple burl veneer and ebony inlay. Rabbet joinery on the main case, I then inset ½” plywood and flush trimmed everything up. Then, using vacuum press bags I got from Amazon, I attached the veneer. I show how to join pieces of veneer and glue them on using regular Titebond 2. I then cut ¼” grooves around the whole box and inlaid ebony using ca glue and Titebond 2. Finally I flushed trimmed everything up, rounded the corners, put in the Spanish cedar liner and put on the Brusso hinges, feet, and brass lift. The finish is a gloss lacquer I got from Woodcraft. All the tools I used are linked below. At the end of the video I talk about the trials and tribulations I had building this as well as how to setup a humidor. Please subscribe, comment and like. Thanks for watching!

If anyone else is an aluminum fabricator this channel will give you some great ideas.
Excellent video man! Loved it. Only tip I would offer: when you separate the lid from the box, it can be mated better. Best technique I've used is gluing down 4 pieces of sandpaper to a workbench, then sand the top of the box and bottom of the lid. This produces perfectly flat edges. It will make the seam look much more sharp. Loved watching the veneer. Nice to see a new technique.
Thank you for posting! I started my apprenticeship at age 71, and so far am finding it fascinating and fun! As one of my mentors, you need a thank you for your excellent tutorage!
Dude. Huge props to your cinematographer. They are so talented.
I have been around pianos for most of my long life, and that is more than all the ebony I have so far seen. Yeah, its a big piece of ebony!
Beautiful project ! Really liked the fact you took the time to show it from wood selection to finish . Also liked that you showed that sometimes things go wrong, even for the more accomplished woodworker 😉 thank you
I really appreciate it Mark! I was a lot of fun to shoot
Just finally discovering and watching your videos. Filming and edits are super pro and great project! Dude, this rules! Cheers
Burris Dixon we work really hard so that is very appreciated my friend!
I think of doing something and then this man's already done it. Appreciate all the things you share with us, Mr Katz-Moses
Glad to see you kept the interior cedar unfinished!! You don’t want your cigars marinating in chemically coated wood!!
My 26 year old humidor I built out of Padouk, Wenge & Spanish Cedar keep my cigars in perfect condition.
A few years ago I smoked the last of my Cuban cigars (a legal gift from a friend) , it was in my humidor for14 years.
Love the Pro Tips you share with us! The humidor is beautiful. All around excellent video.
Thank you so much!
Hi Jonathan, nice box.
In guitar making we don't use superglue when gluing wooden binding as it's not as strong a joint as wood glue. What I do is apply a couple of coats of shellac on 2" all around my edges. I even do this before cutting my channel as I believe it helps with getting a crisp line. Then I attach the binding with reinforced tape (tape with fiberglass in it so it's super strong) by pulling really hard. I alternate the direction of the pulling to get an even distribution of the clamping force. When I remove the tape, i'm super careful to roll it over itself so I don't tear out anything, even though the shellac is doing a good job preventing that. That method is escpecially effective since we have curves on the guitar and we need the binding material to conform to these curves.
Anyway, good job, have a good smoke !.
Great music, and appropriately used--thank you for not putting music under all of your talking. One thing at a time! Very nicely edited, too--kept things moving, and great quick shots! Nice job!
jaydub thanks so much Jay!
Gorgeous humidor. Lots of valuable information. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing this build. Awesome.
Jim Welton my pleasure my friend!
A friend of mine suggested I build a humidor... Im not a smoker but I am a woodworker... cool project... I never knew that spanish cedar was used in them. Sourcing fine woods and materials seems to be the biggest challenge so thank you for the info!
I love the humidor! I switched from sponge to beads then from beads to Boveda packs for my humidor a few years ago. They are great because they provide two way control so you don't have to baby sit your humidor as much. Big humidors can benefit from an active humidity system but for small desktop units, Boveda packs work really well.
An honest and humble video. Great production & editing and greatly appreciated and inspiring for us newbies.
Bro! That is a beautiful piece of work. I love that you are open about being new to certain techniques and still willing to learn. Finished product is great. 💪
Congratulations, it’s beautiful!!! And that piece of ebony was huge!
barbara kvistad I see your ebony and raise you this! Muahahahaha
Great project Jonathan! Beautiful workmanship. You are such a pro!!!!
Love the project and the in depth explanations. Extremely useful and educating. Thank you for another great project!
Ludovic Boyadjian thank you so much bud!
I stopped watching box making video awhile ago now, but I'mm glad i watched this one. That was amazing!
Thanks so much Chris!
Very nice job. Love watching you build things and learn at the same time.
Richard Iverson it was such a fun learning process!
Fabulous!
Beautiful piece buddy! I am with the other comments in that I liked this longer format video. That will be a great addition to your home and something to be proud of for years to come.
Thanks bud! Best woodworker last name ever!
Love this! Turned out really awesome. That burl is super nice!
SE Collectiv it looks even nicer in person. Thanks bud!
Awesome build
Nice build! Nice humidor. You did the right thing by leaving the interior cedar unfinished. Keep up on the humidity often so when you are ready for that 5x a year smoke...they are ready to go!
Outstanding!
Dude. That thing turned out amazing. 👍
Man, I love your authenticity. Great video. Love your projects.
2 years later I’d like to see a little recap on how it has held up
Zion Billy your right no one cares
Dall' Italia from Tuscany WOW!!! You and your staff are AMAZING !!!!
Great job with the video. Your production value just keeps getting better. I love the way you split up the video with great build shots and then great instructional sections. And the music was fantastic,👌. Killer job!

Left it open on computer and just got back to watch the end; beautiful work, great narration, super filming....and thanks...cheers...rr
Richard Rider I really appreciate it Richard
Perfect as usual!
And very nice wood dealer!
Thanks bud!
Awesome man!
Dude that is awesome. Great job on this build. Keep up the great videos my friend
Mike alan Templeton thanks my friend!
Excellent technique and skill, thanks for sharing! A tip for viewers if your outer box material is not cedar. You should consider applying a poly to the inside of the box before installing the cedar liner to prevent wood movement due to the high humidity inside the humidor. Then sand away areas for the glue to adhere the cedar. It's not really necessary here because you used cedar for outer box, but for any other material, its very important. Again, fantastic video!
Great Build !!! You gave me encouragement to try and build one myself.. thanks again for the vid..
What a lovely box you have 😉
Beautiful and looked like a really enjoyable project! You should be very proud of that.
docdevin1 cheers my friend!
Wow. Nice work. You should be proud. Wow.
This video inspired me to build one myself. This is about the 20th and last time im coming back to reference this video! Finally finished mine after about two weeks. Basically copied yours completely except for the veneer! Yours is better but i am extremely happy with mine and never would have attempted it!
That means a lot bud! Send me pictures I want to see yours. Proud of you!
Great job! 👌
galtobell1 Altobell thank you!
1875's - Great choice for a beauty of a box.
bogey2230 they're so good!
I shop at Mayan Hardwood as well. Good selection and great customer service!
Great build man, that ebony really makes the box pop👍🏻👍🏻
Graham Parsons it made my wallet pop as well hahaha. Thanks so much bud!
Very cool build. I might have to try this.
Brian Skudney thanks. It's so fun!
Nice work.....!!!!
That craftsmanship is dope !!!
Thanks bud!
Jon, this is such a beautiful build! I don't even smoke and I want to build one now. Ha! - Joe
Beautiful
Samuel Roberts cheers Sam!
I’ve been following on Instagram for a while first video on CZcams I have watched. Yes I subbed 😂 I’m building a humidor myself really really helpful so far super appreciative!
Great job on the box you are a good worker
Thanks bro!
The humidor looks amazing! Nice work. New subscriber here. Looking forward to what’s coming next
Nice work.
Charlie Griffin thanks Charlie !
Dude, holy crap, I hope to half the woodworker you are some day! I found your videos when you teamed up with the “stay passionate and make something “ guy when you were doing dovetails using your new jig.
I smoke cigars regularly and I can’t wait to try this project!! Maple curl is my favorite too. And I have several board feet of mahogany for a special project like this. Since I’m prior Navy, I bought a brass porthole to center on the lid (maybe to heavy to use idk ) but awesome, I now have a reference for veneers as I haven’t done that either. Lol.
Love the music in between long shots and your production is awesome too.
Thanks so much brother!
Really enjoyed your video. Very informative. I have similar project for myself and will be referencing your video.
Thanks for taking the time to do a no b.s. build
My absolute pleasure Dax!
Great wood choice and colors. Really came out great! The only thing I might have done differently is to put the veneer on the pieces while its still flat and then cutting it to size and gluing the box up.
GuysWoodshop great advice. I struggled with that decision. Thanks Guy!
Come on up to Indiana. I'll teach you all my little tricks.
GuysWoodshop 100 percent going to happen. We'll talk soon. Seriously
This was a great video. I love your videos. Your a really good teacher. As an old veneer guy. The most critical thing is the core or underpayment. The material you glue the veneer to. It has to be dead flat. If you have any bumps or high spots you will have burn through. Holes in your veneer. No you didn’t sand it wrong you just took off the high spot which was higher than the thickness of the veneer. .003. Thick veneer is about the thickness of a beard hair. Hope that made sense.
Coming from a metal fabricator that wants to learn about wood working this is exactly what I want to see! This guy is passionate about what he does and obviously knows what he’s doing and it’s not like watching an infomercial like the so called professionals on here. This is what CZcams should be about instead of boosting these amateurs just so they can advertise for these big companies
Thanks so much bud. I really appreciate the kind words. To be fair, this video took about 1200 dollars to produce (which is higher than usual because of the piece I made). I can completely understand why guys do sponsorships and don't fault them at all. I am very passionate about this and woodworking but if I didn't sell my dovetail jig, have affiliate links and other sources of revenue, it would be financially impossible to produce this content. I am luckier than most to have a popular product which allows me to produce videos like this.
David White ... I know exactly what you mean. For people that are just starting out, many of those other videos are impossible to follow. For a beginner they can be overwhelming. And isn’t it crazy how they hardly ever show any mistakes. Believe me, they happen A Lot.
This guy is pretty awesome.
Certainly no expense was spared on the materials. Gorgeous humidor.
nice video! ty
Damn....Why can't we have dato sets on table saws in Europe!!!! EVERY time(only at 4:51,) I see you guys on great American(which I am btw,) tablesaws I am GREEN with envy. Now I will try to relax and enjoy your video...cheers...rr from Normandy
Fellow Normandy inhabitant here! Dado cutters aren’t the safest thing in the world, go a bit deeper than is ideal or try to back out of a cut, and you’re asking for trouble. I rather be realising my rebates and grooves on a router table any day of the week.
Sensacional, Parabéns pelo lindo trabalho! (Sensational, congratulations on the beautiful work!)
Wow man, great work!!! I’d love to see you collaborate with Chris at the third coast craftsman. You guys are my favorite on CZcams
He's a good friend!
Excellent video and a great humidor.
I completely agree with you about Brusso hardware. It is relatively costly but it is a great value for beauty, quality, and function.
New viewer and new subscriber here. I am really enjoying catching up on your videos.
Many thanks!
I love it . I'd have to say it is scary when doing the vacuum and hopping everything sticks where its suppose too. Looks like you got it right.
Excellent work and video! Inspired me to do my own! I prefer to essentially "dry box" my cigars so I can save on the hygrometer but I'd love to play with veneering. The particle board boxes on Amazon are just insulting when you look at how they're constructed. Would rather have the experience and joy of making my own than buying a humidor for $200+. Thank you for sharing this experience! Enjoy your next cigar thoroughly brother!
Love the BFM sticker on your truck!
Andrew Racho chive on
awsome video man that thing came out great
Carman's Custom Woodworks thanks my man!
Katz-Moses Woodworking Shop no problem love the detail and enthusiasm you put in your videos
Outside the humidor is 40% humidity 🤪. I loved every moment of the weather in SoCal over the history of my time in the Corps, but I assure you the weather is like no other. For example it’s almost always between 68-92% humidity where I live so regulative type materials are a must for moisture release absorption in humidors here with refrigeration to actually remove humidity also being more frequently encountered than you’d suspect. Not withstanding, you’re exactly right on the humidity considerations you made. You know I’m just messing with you otherwise. Rock on, No Zero Days my brother!
Awesome dude. And so good to see someone using proper PPE and pushers on their power equipment.
Pretty sure the mask he used is alright for dust particles, but this thing isn't doing anything for solvent vapors. So much for "proper" PPE.
@@al_kaloid is English not first language?
@@silvermediastudio I beg your pardon? Language should be pretty irrelevant in this case if the point is getting across, don't you think?
@@al_kaloid apparently you can't read full sentences
@800lb Gorilla Dude.. apparently you can't even *comprehend* the most basic sentences. Are you aware that I'm talking about the fact that his face mask provides insufficient protection from fumes and therefore isn't proper protective equipment? I'm not dissing *you* or what you've said. Seems like my point went straight over your head, Mr. 800lb gorilla. smh
Love it man! I have a couple small cheap humidors that will now be replaced by a nice one built by me in the future. Thanks
I can't wait to see what you create bud!
Super-clean!
I don’t believe in the internet either.
StudioJLT hahahahaha this guy reads descriptions. Cheers bud! Thank you!
But seriously...where does all your shavings even go you wizard 😳😳
Working with wood for years when it came to finishing with gloss or lacquer was to use compressed air to blow the dust off between coats and sanding. we would only do 2 coats and it would always be a glass finish
You did a great job... I'll buy one...lol
I would love to see an update on this. So many commercially available humidors are crap.
Love your videos. Your enthusiasm is always a motivator. Music…hmm not so much. Sounds like a hot rod show on motor trend tv.
Friggin right man!
SouthBound N' Down hahahah. It certainly f*&ks like a demon
Hey K-M, very nice build! One thing I love about Spanish cedar is it’s spicy smell. It’s wonderful. One suggestion: you may want to consider wearing a respirator with chemical cartridges when spraying lacquer. It looked like you were wearing a dust mask? Thanks!
Good advice and thank you!
This is a beautiful box. I am curious, did you veneer over solid wood for the four sides of the box?
That’s a great project. I’ve never tried veneer but what you did seems to be doable. Perhaps I’ll try it sometime in the not to distant future. Since I don’t smoke I’ll have to try it on something else.
WB Fine Woodworking it's a lot easier than it looks. Good luck and I can't wait to see what you create
Now you need to stock it up!
Eliot Mays way ahead of you ;-)
Great video of a great project. One correction, though. The propylene glycol is hygroscopic and is used with distilled water in the humidifier to stabilize the humidity. It is not for disinfecting or killing fungus or creepie crawlies.
40% humidity!... Lol, you crack me up! The only time we see 40% humidity is dead Winter with the heat on high.. Try 85-99% humidity most of the time here in Florida. I wish we had 40%....
Spanish cedar is favored because it imparts a desirable flavor to your cigars therefore the interior of humidors are never sealed.
I want to build a black walnut cigar box (not a full blown hubidor). I was thinking dovetails for the sides and just doing a panel 1/4 from the top and bottom of some 1/4 inch maple. This project might be a lot for me at this stage but loved watching you work.
Bro, loving your work & your vids! Truely impeccable! I’m not up to speed with laminating, is there a reason you can’t just clamp the laminate instead of using the vac bags & everything that comes with it?
Just wondering now that I'm watching this I was wondering if you can do a then and now video on all your woodworking projects such as this cuz I would be curious on how that box holy held up out of 2 years
beautiful humidor...but you gotta protect your lungs. A dust mask isn't sufficient for spraying lacquer...get a decent vapor absorbing mask. They may not be as comfortable, but it'll keep you making great content for a lot longer!
I can smell this video
Great job, looks very nice. One question, other than cost, why not use solid hard wood instead of Veneer?
First off, I really enjoyed the longer format video that brought us along the journey from wood selection all the way to the detailed wrap up talk at the end. -- what was the point of the business card trick when cutting miters at the stop block ? Personally I'd like to see a few more technical tips and tricks along the way, good enertainment and learning along the way. Thanks.
Alec McMahon it's a way to micro adjust the stop block when you just need to shave a tiny bit. Thanks for watching my friend!
Found this video amongst the myriad of woodworking videos. Great job! Easy to watch this for 30 minutes. Very informative, and well made!
I am actually working on plans to build a humidor right now (first real woodworking project) and am running into a snag. I can't find any spanish cedar that is the thickness I need and is wide enough to make solid pieces. It looked like you took a thicker piece and cut it down to 1/4" thick pieces. If I don't have those tools, what can I do? Is plywood an acceptable alternative for the lining? Or should I use several narrower pieces?
Again, great video! Thanks for sharing!
Hello David
If you dont have resaw capability then just buy spanish cedar in 1/4 thick. I buy from a source in Maine. gym_bob_in_Maine. he is on ebay. My last purchase was 2 eight inch by 48 inch by 1/4 inch. Total cost with shipping to California was 125.
This is beautiful! I am in the market for high end humidor
I think I will need to buy a table saw soon
Nice but I would have gone with the boss hidden hinges, but it's really a very nice job
A way of measuring the inlay is putting tape on the box mark it out then remove the tape and put it in the inlay pice you want to cut and cut in the lines I must add I've never tried the technique I just stated it was just a thought
Amazing project, love that burl maple with ebony.
Question: When you guys talk about lacquer, are you referring to nitrocellulose lacquer or some other kind? I come from a guitar lutherie knowledge base and it's typically nitro lacquer for high quality instruments and poly for cheaper and/or newer models. The reason I'm not sure about he lacquer finish in these furniture pieces is that in the guitar world, you'll usually hear "nitro finish" for a nitro lacquer finish, not just lacquer. Are there other kinds of lacquer used?
