- Using the Park Tool BTS 1 Tap. Cleaning bottom bracket threads to fit bottom bracket, aka BSA. I was having trouble installing a new bottom bracket on a new Surly frame. Some threads were compromised and I was unable to start the threads properly. It got tight immediately. If I continued to overpower the the threads be it dirt or a stripped thread I would have destroyed threads on the Shimano bottom bracket threads because of the softer aluminum metal. Frames in general should come pre prepped and ready for installation. This includes headset, bottom bracket, wheel drop outs, and seat posts.

This video just helped me save a bike. Thank You! 🎉
Great!! Thank you🏁⚙️💪🏽
In a pinch you can make a thread chaser from an old steel bottom bracket. Grind grooves into the side of the old bracket's threads and carefully start it using a caliper's depth guage to verify that it is running straight. Use cutting oil, like you would with a proper tap. Check it periodically with the caliper. I do this frequently with auto bolts to make a quick and dirty thread chasers from a old bolt. I did the same just yesterday when replacing the b.b. on my wife's bike and found that the new cup wouldn't thread in all the way on the non drive side. It's very easy to start it crooked, and it's hard to tell by eye because of the fine thread pitch, so the caliper check is important. Not what I'd expect a bike shop to do, but when you're diy'ing and stuck it can help.
Nice, innovation is good.
I'll stick with the Park Tool Tech Tuesday tutorial, which is way more precise
Hello Arthur, good and teaching video as always. What would you recommend to do if the threads were completely worn out? Do you think it’s possible to switch to a pressed one in order to keep the frame? Thanks for it and I wish you a nice day 🌞🍀👍
Hi, unfortunately the frame may be compromised and left to trash. That’s a great question, I have not had to deal with that yet. A press fit sounds like a good alternative. It would be up to someone to fabricate a tool to complete the process. Have a great day.
@@BikeTeacher sunlite has a thread-less square tapered bottom bracket for those cases.
Velo orange has one as well
Dear Sir, Thanks for the video. Would you buy the tool if you cant start threading anything in the NDS? I guess im needing something to thread in from the ds and start threading again the NDS to clean up from the inside outward as it leaves the frame out the other side. Cheers for any advice. Its a brand new frame (NOS) im working on.
And this is for a bottom bracket? I don't think your idea is possible, although a good idea. Maybe running a scribe aggressively on the threads that are compromised. And cleaning the area well. Use I light oil when threading.
Mother of gd that steerer extension.
Yes, I have been blessed.
I clicked because i saw that stem lol.
lol, I know, it’s ridiculous.
..........
Seriously?
What did I do wrong?
@@BikeTeacher cutting fluid, not using tool without both sides engaged
I noticed that too and cringed. A "few drops of cutting fluid" is not going to work. He has to use a LOT of cutting fluid. And he should not turn the reamer without the other side attached. So many things not right here.@@4ndyc74
