Calvin is the man! What a coincidence this video is up when I have this issue.I will have to purchase a coil kit.
1:38 Kerosene is a good tapping fluid for aluminium. Cheaper than proprietary blends, and easier to clean off.
thankfully i havn't had to do this yet but i know my future holds this job somewhere so thank you for showing some solutions. Never seen a t-nut that wasn't meant for woodworking , seems like a perfect solution
yeah i jinxed it here i am again with a customers bike and a stripped non replaceable hanger
Back-in-the-day I "barnyarded" a Klein (aluminum) hanger that was bent AND split with a T-nut quick-epoxied into a hole prepared with a reamer. Ugly-as-sin, but the tour company client rode his bike for years afterward with zero issues!
Bonjour Calvin , c'est un travail très délicat 😊 Thank you
I bought a new set of allen keys and used them for the first time to install a deraileur. After applying way too much force I damaged the thread. I bought a helicoil set to fix it but have not used it yet. This video will motivate me to do the job. Thank you. Never use too much force to install your deraileur, kids.
Yup. Only go as tight as you need so there's no play. Torque wrenches are a very valuable investment if you intend to work on your own equipment a lot.
Helicoils are trash its suprising they wre suggesting this.
To reduce the chance of cross threading try doing initial turns backwards and w minimal force till you hear/feel the start of thread on the nut and bolt meet… then turn forwards (ideally w minimal force)
@@jacobpoucherwhy are they trash?
@@pattskatoey3139 you are a cutie 💓
Awesome Video as always Calvin. 👍👍
If you aren't lucky enough to have a nice M10 x 1mm tap, you can use an angle-grinder to cut some sharp-edged grooves into a spare quick-release M10 axle (which are usually cro-moly, or some other hard metal), and use it as a tap for the hanger. Not a recommended method, but might get help someone out in an emergency.
My QR is to small to fit. Something off with this theory.
@@paulb9769 Note that not all axles are 10mm diameter...
The tap from the opposite side method worked! Threads were pretty cross-threaded, except the last couple looked good still. So the derailleur would screw on pretty easy (albeit slightly crooked), but then stop suddenly when it hit the good threads. Just got an M10-1 tap + cutting fluid at the hardware store, followed the video, and now it’s on straight and tight.
Thanks for help i have an old german city bike (>2000) from alu 7071 and ear thread is damaged and is on same piece with frame . Is very handy bike for city comparing with a mtb narow frame and front fork perfect for tide places . Now i will be able to repair it . Thanks so much .
There is solution of my every problem on this channel
Thank you! I guess that in some cases a rear derailleur re-alignment might be advisable...
I would only say that metal splinters are the f@#$ing worst and a pair of shop gloves goes a long way in a tap job. Of course, Calvin is the GOAT and has no need for such precautions.
No more chain crossing for me after Record Short Cage/Hanger destruction in 53/30. Forgot to look down and confirm gearing before downshifting..... 😩😩😩. We had to file my T nut down on inside to work with 10 speed 13 cog so that chain would not rub it. Klein Quantum Race was 9 speed originally, so space is tight!. Coil might have been better? Great Video!!
More often the hanger is bend or broken. I never had to do something like this but now it is written. 🙄 Yeah I really want to spend more time to retap and helicoil it than it is worth. More often I do this on cranks 😅
Buen vídeo, pero no saldría mas barato comprar una puntera nueva?😅
The Tee Nut (or "Sleeve Nut") seems like a good idea; anyone knows where to get them (in Canada, preferably) ?
I don't know about heli coil.
That will add 2 grams to the bike, it will slow me down by 0.001mph. So I will pass on that fix and get a new $5000 bike.
😮 yes you are right
Great video as usual, Calvin. Can you use a similar approach to repair damaged crank arm threads?
dont take this for fact but i believe out the methods in this video a 9/16 T nut would be the best solution to refit a pedal. I wouldn't try it on one-piece cranks personally since the material is already so little on each side drilling the hole bigger will surely weaken it
The T-nut solution requires drilling out the hole more, which would make the arm thinner where the stress is greatest. The "bushing" system of thread repair is less damaging. Park Tool does not make a pedal thread repair kit, however to use one see www.parktool.com/en-us/blog/repair-help/pedal-bushing-repair-kit-procedure
@@parktool that does appear to be a proper method, but as you are still reaming the hole larger wouldn't it weaken the crankarm in the same way?
i don't actually think i would try any crankarm repair on a bike unless theres tonnes of material on the crankarm all around the thread, or the bike is just meant for a show piece
@@parktool Thanks for this. I have an old (possibly 2008?) Specialized Stumpjumper hardtail which originally had a triple chainring up front (44/32/22 iirc) but the threads were mangled after a bad cross-threading incident. This approach might allow me to make it rideable again since the only replacement triple chainrings I could find were of pretty low quality. I did convert it to a 1x11 meanwhile but the resulting ratios mean that it lost all of it's top end speed.
DIY emergency fix, cut off and feather the end of a brake cable, put inside of the thread while tightening your derailer
How can i repair the threads of the rear derailleur barrel adjuster ( the tube of adjuster seems fine but the part of derailleur where the barrel adjuster tube goes is missing first 2 threads
Most barrels in the rear derailleur are a M5 thread. You should tap it. Use a tap such as
www.parktool.com/en-us/product/frame-tap-tap-8
tapping 1/2 turn then brek the chip by goingr revrse then 1/2 turn ect ect ect
Hi Parktool, I have a complain. In China , I can't buy replacement hammer tip for HMR-4. Dealer suggest me to buy a new one!!!
I am confused because my tread is the opposite direction. I tighten clockwise. Something wrong here.
Double check the thread. Hold the thread vertically, and look at the direction of threads. Right hand threads slope slightly up to the right. If this is a derailleur part, it is a right hand thread.
Moral of this story: always carry a spare derailleur hanger with you, in case that the threads in the hanger get torn out.
What if your derailleur hanger isn’t removable???
Always try to repair a hanger first and foremost. Wheels Manufacturing hangers cost far too much where I live (probably the same all over the world) and nobody else offers such an extensive range. There's no reason to throw away a $50 hanger if you can run a tap through it in a matter of seconds, or use a DAG to realign it.
Also, when are Park going to release their own coil kits? Seems a shame to have to suggest other manufacturers...
Yep you’re gonna booger them threads
the background music is a little distracting, maybe choose something more subtle
No.
6:12 At what point and how a drill is measured can only be a bad joke.
Considering who this video is aimed at, such a display is dangerous and involves the cost of replacement parts. ;-(
Some video are "aimed" at the home mechanic and some are for professionals.
