PARK TOOL: Listen to me....... This guy is a gem and needs a raise, secondly, he is a supreme asset to your company, make sure he is happy employee.

Right, he's going to get a raise because cliff cox said so.
@@vapeurdepisse No, he will not, but if many people say the same, then Park may treat him better than they already have. That's the purpose of communal post on the same topic..

This is an immortal video. Will forever go down in the hall of fame of CZcams.
Honestly, you need an award for this video, the visuals are unmatched in most other how to videos, this could be part of a professional course on how to service bicycles, this is pure gold, thank you so much!
Pure gold!
Exactly. This is always my go-to reference when I need to adjust my derailleur.
It is a professional course.. The school that my bike guys went to used these exact vids as primers. and then learned all the variations of part types. I save a couple hundred dollars a year indexing alone. A lot of bike shops hate these guys. for obvious reasons. screw them. I have a park bike stand and all my tools are park. I was sponsored early on in my out back riding days bye park. you are not going to beat these instructional s.
I was thinking the same thing! Made a somewhat complicated topic much easier to implement for the weekend bike mechanics
Guys does the bike HAVE to be up? Bc I don’t have anything to hold it to check and pedal lol I’m guessing I can put the bike on its seat n hand bar and work on it like that ? Really appreciate whomever can help me out
This is not just a great video on how to adjust a bike - it's also a great example of what a how-to video should be. Every educator should watch this even if they have no interest in bikes.
I know a guy who educated himself on the park tool yt. got a ground floor job ata big shop here in the twin cities.
I was looking for videos of trains derailing and now I'm a master bike mechanic
LOL🤣
Good one Chad
If you're ever riding by some train tracks and a train derails right by you you'll have your bike shifting quickly and can hopefully speed off without getting flattened like a pancake.

Hahahaha, made me LOL! Good one! That's the internet age! Endless rabbit holes!
This is truly an example of well planed instruction . He stays perfectly on his subject and doesn’t move ahead until he has proven his point and there is no silly unnecessary idol chat. 11out of 10 . Thank you very much
If there is a more accurate and detailed video on gear correction anywhere on the net than this guys I will eat my hat. He is the master of bikes...
Don’t ever remove this video.
The production quality of these park tool videos is insane. They are the best content I've seen on CZcams in, yeah, forever.
I don't understand so my chain keeps coming off when I reach top gear so I just the h limit screw but is clock wise or anti clock wise?
I am compelled to concur. This is among the best instructional videos I've ever observed.
This has to be the best rear derailleur tutorial on the internet, explains everything and easy to follow.
I was about to finally accept that I can only use 6 of my 7 gears but this guy did it.

This is perhaps the *most* impactful and helpful DIY video on YoutTube, ever... Seriously, if/when more people rode bikes instead of driving cars, this video should be considered part of the "Bike Maintenance Holy Grail". Wonderfully explained, and incredibly thorough for a 16min video. Thanks!

Wow, I used to own many bikes back in my younger days but never knew the terminology and how to fix/adjust the shifting mechanism. I’m kinda in a trouble now with a huffy bike because the derailleur spring came off while trying to pull the chain. It’s a brand new bike, this happened minutes after I took it out of the box today smh
Couldn't agree more. Years of baffling experimentation with the derailleur and substandard results, followed by a trip to the local bike shop to undo the damage I did appear to be over. Thank you, Park Tool and Mr Derailleur Man.
I remember when I was young I felt confident to 'fix' my bike.
Let's just say by the time I was done... I had less gears than when I started 😅
Thanks to Park Tools we can now maintain our bikes. These are the best, most clear and well edited videos on the internet I guess! Thank you Park Tool!!
Haha so funny. I’ve been riding for 45 years and now at 51 I finally feel comfortable fiddling with screws on the derailleur. 🤦🏻♂️😂
@@davidhilton5414 51 years young here. I just finished watching this video while working on my bike, and after some trial and error, I finally got the rear derailleur adjusted almost perfectly. It'll take more fiddling to come up with a repeatable procedure, but I would not have even known where to begin without this tutorial.
@@Durwood71 I concur!! I always looked at it as voodoo haha
Hahaha, I’m young and pretty much in the same scenario. Got a fraction of the gears I should :P
Only 1 problem now, how do I know when it's time for a new bike? Used to be that once I expertly adjusted my bicycle down to a single speed, it was time to trade it in!
Calvin should be putting up on the pedestal for every biking community. He's passionate and thoroughly explains the process. What a privilege to learn from these videos!!

I don't understand so my chain keeps coming off when I reach top gear so I just the h limit screw but is clock wise or anti clock wise?
LOL 🤣😂 totally agree.
snap_ drama if it is going over the last gear you need to turn the high limit clockwise. I just had the same issue and fixed it doing just that. I believe that is what makes the limit screw stop the the derailleur from going past that last gear accidentally.
I’m positive Calvin Jones could teach preschool children how to fix bikes. Such a great resource for the home mechanic.
The more complicated the instructions got, the easier he made them possible for me to achieve. Brilliant ✌️👍
That's actually his other job.
That mustache is so glorious the bike fixes itself out of respect.
Not only does the host do a very good job with their explanations and presentation but major thanks to the editing and motion graphics team for making these videos the absolute clearest graphic representations of alignments, parts and everything else
Probably eight or nine months ago I used this video as a guide to getting my rear derailleur set perfectly… The instructions in this video are articulate, well laid out, and very clear cut. For somebody who has absolutely no experience, this is a very complicated endeavor; which this gentleman explains in such a way, that WITHOUT ANY FUSS WHATSOEVER, I was able to perform like a master mechanic from a reputable local bike shop! My derailleur shifts smoothly like a Swiss watch! With that being said I hadn’t yet adjusted the front derailleur, and came here just to make sure I’ve left this gentleman and this channel a compliment, a like, and double check that I’m subscribed! It’s easy to use these things and go on with life, and often it’s just the nature of the world, but this guy did such an amazing job guiding me through this process, if I didn’t stop to thank him & your channel, then I don’t feel I deserve the masterful help! Thank you for your service to humanity! There is no doubt you are a master at what you do!

More relevantly he also said “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.”
This is BY FAR the best video ive watched on the subject. Not only does he explain the process, he also explains all the likely scenarios one might face while adjusting the derailleur, along with which screw does what in great detail. Im saving this video in a playlist, its a gem.
💯
RAD also has a very indepth explanation of all these adjustments and why they are important as well. He explains things well, as he is a Professional at e-bike repair, and explains far more than I needed to know, but the derailleur portion was what was of interest to me the most!
I second that.
Same. I even want to save the video locally.
Yes - amazing. I had a bike delivered in a box that needed some assembly and in need of a tune. I spent a couple of weeks putting up with poor shifting, just getting used to the bike, but I bit the bullet today and now it's shifting like a dream. I went from noob to someone with actual knowledge.
At first I thought to myself “well this is pretty long” but while I’m watching, I’m like “whoa! every tutorial video should be like this”

I don't have a gear bicycle but found this video because of the derailleur's awesome engineering.
I've watched this video so many times I think they're going to play it at my funeral

Elijah Trafton try going through the video with a pen and paper handy instead of your tools. Make notes of the most important steps. Try and get your head around cable tension first, that is quite a tricky concept: lengthening the cable housing tightens the cable, it doesn’t make natural sense to your brain. Good luck!
How can anyone give this a thumbs down? I've worked on my own bikes for 30 years but always a bit of a hack on rear derailleurs. If I can get it to shift fairly quietly through the full range, I call it good. This is an awesome video on how to do it right and as an engineer, I appreciate the step-by-step with the logic behind it. Every Park Tool video is extremely well done, clear, and concise. Keep up the good work!

This man has taught me so much about bikes I have now started working on my friends bikes because of everything I’ve learnt from him
who ever owns this bike is lucky to have it set up by this guy
I. H limit
Step 0: Big gear front, Small cog rear
Step 1: Turn barrel adjuster clockwise (x4)
Step 2: Turn H limit screw too tight (until it's audible)
Step 3: Loosen H limit screw until there is no sound
Step 4: Turn barrel adjuster counter-clockwise (x2)
II. Indexing
Step 0: Big gear front, Small cog rear
Step 1: Put RD to 2nd smallest cog
Step 2: Turn barrel adjuster counter-clockwise, until you hear the sound.
Step 3: Then go clockwise until there is no sound
Step 4: Move on to bigger cogs. If you hear sound, turn the adjuster clockwise. Then go smaller, and back to the bigger (noisy) cog
Step 5: If shifting is slow, quarter-turn clockwise of barrel adjuster will help
III. L limit
Step 0: Small gear front, 2nd largest cog rear
Step 1: Shift to largest cog rear
Step 2: If there is noise, then good! If there isn't, then go back to 2nd largest and tighten L limit. (Repeat until you hear noise at largest cog)
Step 3: Once largest cog is noisy, go back to 2nd largest rear cog and loosen L limit
Step 4: Go back and see if it's still noisy
Step 5: Repeat until largest cog is no longer noisy.
(Press RD shifter to see if RD moves. It shouldn't move)
Thank you very much for this!
Step 1: Copy paste into Text Edit (or whatever)
Step 2: Spend threee minutes formatting
Step 3: Change font to 13pt American Typewriter
Step 4: Save as Rear Derailleur Adjustment
Step 5: Print and post on the wall beside workstand.
Now, go get the Kona and get on with it.

Thank you so much. I took my bike into a shop for a “tune-up” and specifically said it was shifting into the highest gear. I got it back with the same issue. Thanks to your super clear and straightforward instruction, I was able to take care of it myself. Mahalo 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
Some, not all but some bike shops, I imagine car repair/maintenance as well seem to not be very helpful unless you know the exact terminology. Not only can I properly index my gears myself now but if for whatever reason I’m lazy I can go to a shop and usually within 15 minutes I’m off and running for little to no charge and it seems to me it is because I can give the exact issue. Sad that not everyone gets the same treatment. Also with a massive spike in riders because of covid I appreciate Calvin Jones and this channel even more. Cheers guys
Bike shops are mostly a scam
I've had my dissapointment with technicians as well, better to do it myself.
I don't even think my bike shop did the derailleur adjustments on my bike properly. Shifting was still wonky after the spring tune up so decided to do it myself using this video and voila! Everything is super smooth and precise now. Thank you Calvin and Park Tools
I've just watched eight videos on this subject and this one is the best. I also appreciate the visual aids/color markers. He's not saying a bunch of big words but breaking it down, step by step. Derailleur for dummies 😅

Would be nice if you could get one of their Beam type torque wrenches with the square socket fitting on both sides of the tool end though, because sometimes the only position you can torque the bottom bracket bolts is one you can't see the indicator face side of the torque from, would be nice if you could flip the wrench around and swap the socket onto the other side....
