- The anxiously awaited DC6 by PMDG is here! A systems heavy, glitz, and candy heavy retro airliner that brings the sim back to the post-war years! Is it worth the heavy price and how does it fair as the first majorly systems heavy bird in MSFS 2020?

PMDG has a series of videos on this bird that they have released on CZcams that shows you how to fly it. The narrator who is a bigwig in PMDG is a radial plane enthusiasts. He flies a DC-3. He has a lot of good information on the differences between flying a radial engine vs a jet or a standard piston aircraft.
You did a great job on this video. I have always loved your reviews. I like it when you are picky on an expensive aircraft, please don't change. Developers need to produce quality if they are going to charge for it. I'm mostly a GA sim pilot. However this one has caught my interests, and I'm enjoying it. Maybe I'll play with a jet airliner after this one.
"This is like a '55 Bel Air.... with wings" ROFL - Nailed it !
I love flying this plane. It's such a challenge doing Alaskan bush flights with the classics!
I used to love the complexity of modern jetliners in the earlier MSFS versions. However, as time passed, I realized that it's so much more fun to fly General Aviation. I really have changed my mind on modern airliners, becoming rather discharmed with how automated everything has become. These old aircraft are easier to understand and master and so delightfully empowering to fly once you do. In FS2004 they had a DC 3, which I flew the crap out of.... it was just so marvelously authentic and old school. Learned so much about flying with that old girl. So having a study level DC-6 in MSFS2020 is a dream come true and with historic timetables libraries available on the internet, it's easy to roleplay piloting one of these in the 1950s, using real-life timetables - this is made more immersive with all the gorgeous historic liveries which PMDG has painstakingly recreated. So in conclusion, I'm in simmer's heaven, actually. Expensive, comparatively - but I went to a fancy restaurant two days ago and spent $60 on a rather forgettable meal. So please take my money for something I'm going to spend hundreds of hours flying and studying.... So no, I don't think it's expensive, on the contrary, for the kind of flying I love, I think $55 is something of a bargain...
Anyway - Big thanks AvAngel for another fun-to-watch, entertaining review!
You’re welcome and I totally agree personally, these machines are what I love… they have character.
She is a beast - I would love a DC 8, Vikers Viscount and Vanguard too of this standard! (but I am greedy).
I have to say PMDG nailed it with this one, was up flying in it within a hour of its release using the AFE of course. I was surprised you thought it was pricey for a addon I was actually surprised it was so low given the P3D version which is hella old cost $65, not to mention Just flights Arrow is $45.
I'm comparing it to existing aircraft out for msfs, and I've never been a PMDG person before. It is not an insignificant price for an addon even in the fsx days... not crazy, but not cheap.
I love this plane. Flying the big jets has never really appealed to me, but this thing is amazing. Given that this video is a year old now you've probably long since figured it out, but your takeoff problem was you started rolling long before the AFE had the plane fully configured. Once you click on takeoff, just stand on the brakes until he says you're at full power, then start your takeoff roll. And for any new people considering this plane, PMDG has a great set of tutorial videos on how to fly it.
Yeah these reviews are always very new to the aircraft on purpose. It's a wonderful ship :)
I've already taken this big girl on a 2+ hr jaunt up the coast of Norway, it's truly awesome. I needed to dive further in and really learn the systems to get the best out of it, but I love the fact that with the help of the tablet and the AFE you can just jump in and go.
Gotta say, I have a soft spot about a mile wide for thiis thing.
This is exactly what I've been waiting for
The original aircraft is an absolute beauty, I’m not an airliner fanatic but I am a military fan and it’s connections to WWII and after are what excites me about this old bird. Plus let’s face it she’s a looker. The model in the sim is really really high class judging by your video, I do agree with the photo replacing modelling for the price it’s a bit of a cheap shortcut. Textures apart from a few glitches look b e a utiful and she seems to fly bang on, she should feel heavy. If a modern computer aircraft feels like a fighter this should feel like a truck, an oversize truck, with 13 axles, carrying 100 metric tonnes and that’s great because the feel you get with these old girls is amazing. Brilliant video as always Rachael my love
Glad you spotted the low Res MS Paint panel overhead! The quilts on the flight deck side walls are a bit iffy as well. Nevermind eh, just don't look at them!
I Love The DC6 On The New MSFS2020 I Hope too fly this Plane soon when I buy The MSFS2020 Deluxe Bundle Awesome Video.
I like these old school aircraft, when it comes into the marketplace I will buy it.
Also look forward to a Boeing 727, Lockheed Connie, VC10 and a ton of bush planes / float planes.
727 is one I'm really wanting as well.
Thats why i like pmdg software.
I see the latest update has addressed some of those cockpit texture issues, and added some 3d modelling - just keeps getting better and better. Even as more of a casual simmer, I feel I need a daily dose of this!
Very Good Video flying Lady.
Maybe this will appear on the Marketplace .
Thank you for calling out those flat photo textures on the upper and lower side panels. For the price tag those are really disappointing. Like, why go 95% of the way there and then stop and say "Good enough" for those little sections? Why not just finish them to the same quality of the rest of the cockpit? It drags down the overall quality which is otherwise like you said, just fantastic.
Love your reviews. Keep it up!
Thank you :) and yes, I want to be honest, critical but also fair on people so i try to be nice about it :)
I was shocked you put up a review on the weekend. You know its a big deal when you do puts up a review on the weekend. Just a few things to note, I do however realize you fly it as you wish, but first, the Pilot didn't touch the engine controls much on this plane, the Flight Engineer did all that due to how hard it to manage them without messing them up. Second, you started your take off roll before the flight engineer finished his take off check list which is why you had little power at the start. Shortly after take off the Flight Engineer will set the power to climb power. 3rd is learning dry vs wet take off. Dry for under 80,000 ish pounds and Wet for above that. This may all sound annoying but it's all meant so the pilot can concentrate on the flying and not worry about the engines. PMDG actually did put up a Tutorial on their CZcams page if you want a more in depth look of this planes systems. Hope to see you fly this more as there is a lot to learn and watch you getting better. This plane is much more complex then the GA airplanes you normally cover.
I'm very used to flying myself... and as pilot, I am not used to not controlling my own thrust for takeoff and landing, the time where I need to be able to make small corrections and changes. That's an importan thing to me... Plus an AI engineer isn't a guy's hand on the throttle, its just doing one set procedure, not adapting. Makes me nervous.
I do plan to go in depth and focus on the settings and procedures when I get time, but I didn't have time to read over and study the material within a couple of hours of it coming out... It's a first look as I said, not an in depth analysis of its systems... a 'do you want to throw money at this?' review.
@@AvAngel Yeah, I get it. You want full control at all times. I suppose you could use the AI up to cruse and shut it off, or where ever in the flight you like. Its nice PMDG left all that up to the person flying on where and when not to use the AI. However they do control things like supercharger pressure and fuel mixture. They simply make sure the engine isn't destroyed. But I also get when you get a new thing to play with, you want to mess with it without reading the manual. As the title says, its a First Look. As some may say, gotta break a few eggs to make an omelet and There is no replacement for experience. I enjoy your reviews because you want to give your opinion on your experience on how the product is like to use. I normally don't buy planes or other add-ons until I see your reviews. Your usually the least harsh on a product. If you don't like it, its has be bad, and if you do like it, its at least something to consider. I hope you don't see my comments as being negative towards you as I usually just try to help if I can. Happy flying.
Oh I don’t see it as negative at all, the purpose of my reviews is a test flight of sorts, in most cases outside of how to work various bits I avoid procedures and exact numbers for the test to see how far I can push an aircraft…. I want it to be a blind test to give a truly honest opinion not one based on hours of flying, will a user feel they got something worth their time or is it something you simply cannot fly without studying? I recognise those of us who enjoy flying the numbers but also recognise that a vast majority of simmers love airplanes but either don’t have time or incline to study and just want to enjoy addons… there are far better CZcamsrs covering systems and in depth matters, my goal is to kick the tires and show that more casual group they too can enjoy more detailed addons, it’s a gateway… you learn with time.
Honest quick first looks at what you will experience first time in the seat.
Wait until Engineer says full power before you do your take off role
Mm I know that now but a first look is straight in fresh, without studying first to get that initial impression
sure worth it thnks pmdg
Pmdg big up slow but sure and perfect study level aircraft☺
I want the super constellation!
Remember to disable the gust lock - otherwise you can't get full control of the airplane. This also limits engines 2&3 for some reason. Also, turning the turbochargers on High when climbing helps quite a bit.
I've forgotten to disable the gust lock a couple of times, resulting in quite the embarrassing crash land in the woods right after takeoff.
i like your planes avangel and you are a great pilot
Thanks :)
Had a serious issue with CTDs that appear be caused by multiplayer & FSUIPC. After turning off both, I've been CTD free for a couple test flights. YAY!!!! Now, I have no real idea how to fly the darn thing but that will be for later (after reading the POH). Hehehe... This is my first PMDG plane and to say I'm impressed would be an understatement. I was expecting the price to be $70+ but when I saw it was $55, I jumped on it! That's CRJ money and well worth it. Looking forward to some Pan Am flights to the Caribbean & South America once I get it figured out.
that’s a pretty plane
I can’t wait for flight simulator to be on console,So I can fly along🛫
Will u be able to have mods on the Xbox?
@@MrTrustdesa thanks also will u be able to use the sim on Xbox1
Nice detailed review. I'm still puzzled they can't work out a better model for the engine sound in msfs though. Still sounds a bit synthetic and too regular. When rpm changes it seems they just rescale the pitch of the same sound.
Those old radial engines, one of the best sounds in the world. I can't wait for the particle sim, I'm hoping PMDG will then add smoke effects for the engines at startup.
The particles is the one thing I was incredibly sad they didn't do to start with... snow, rain, water for floatplanes (for god's sake they included a seaplane from stock)... grr.
@@AvAngel Yeah the first plane I tried was the Icon, no wake was a bummer. But at least it's coming...
I can't wait to pick this up from the marketplace!
Pretty sure its just their site... I think
@@AvAngel It is for now, it ought to make it to MS Market after a while. I'm computer illiterate so I won't risk trying to figure out how to add it into the program. I'll fuck it up guaranteed.
@@bricesonc You download a zip file. The file has an installer. You put in the auth code they give you at purchase, then it installs the plane and the PMDG Ops Center for downloading liveries.
@@JDSleeper Thank you, I was able to fumble my way through it! This is going to be an interesting plane to learn to fly. Thanks!
This is a great offering, but I would have preferred to see the DC-3/C47 come out first.
Thanks for your hard work previewing these aircraft!
I must say that the price is a bit heavy at $50.+. Which puts it at the bottom of my list for a pixel aircraft, especially with the small glitches, and few minor imperfections you pointed out.
The higher the price, the more constructively critical I typically will be... Because the consumer will be.
As far as PMDG goes, this is cheap! It's also at the top end of what I'm prepared to pay for any aircraft addon, so will be the first and only PMDG plane I buy.
Performance? 😊
I do mention it... not bad, but not great :)
We dont have planes close to study level in msfs except for this one and justflight piper 3 and crj4 with community mod, Thats it. This plane reminds me of a smuggler plane dealing with contraband;).
The Pipers from Justflight, CRJ and this... yeah. There's more coming as developers really feel the SDK out, problem is FSX and P3D (At its core, still fsx) had 15 years to get good and produce study level aircraft... people understood it and it was stable, MSFS is brand new and still changing so its taking time for them to actually 'know' how to make these aircraft, we should see a lot more in the near future.
Commenting before I watch the vid (somehow missed the notification) but I’m passing on this because I have a fairly low end system and this has a fair performance (FPS) hit apparently. Just a heads up for those interested. Quality plane though.
Hi Av, additional comment after looking into the aircraft and flying it a bit more, that weird oddity with the power on the takeoff roll (The AFE seeming to pull it back on the roll, then shove it forward again).... that's what the AFE is meant to do apparently, although it doesn't expect you to be on the roll at the time. When you get onto the runway and hit the "takeoff" on the AFE, you hold the brakes and the AFE calls something about stabilizing at 30", and will then set 30" manifold pressure, at that point there's a quick sweep of the engine gauges, and then the AFE will call for takeoff power, they'll then start to run the engines up to take off power (53" for a dry takeoff, or 59.5" for a wet) at this point you're still holding the brakes at the threshold, once the manifold pressure comes up through 40" you release the brakes and start to roll, they'll then stabalise the power at full power as you roll, and then start to pull back to METO and then climb power after you're airborne. I'm loving finding all the weird oddities like this with this aircraft, it really is a lovely treat to fly.
Great stuff, and good flying!
Yeah hindsight is wonderful lol
@@AvAngel Oh, I know..... I was watching the PMDG tutorials after the first extended flight I took it on, cringing every time he said "And doing this is bad in a radial" I was just thinking "yep.... I did literally all of those things......"
Radials are coaxed and encouraged to behave and see more a… breathing creature than any engine
Nice video! I can't get an answer to this question. Does this aircraft have a "heading bug" to adjust your heading?
Thank you.
Bit before that though the speedy autopilot can control direction
how do you install it once you buy it? do you have to manually put it in community mod folder or can I get it through the offical MSF2020 store?
Its got an installer and it takes care of it, its through PMDG's own launcher which deals with liveries (well their ones) and updates for the plane.
If you're using the engineer for takeoff, you're supposed to stand on the brakes until he sets full power. You can trust him. Do that from idle, not piston popper mode. Dry for max power without water injection, wet for more manifold pressure with water injection. I can't believe your engines didn't blow.
Easy to say after it’s been out this long, this was recorded on release day when I didn’t have time to know how to use the engineer properly.
Oh your poor engines 🤣 great video though!
I break em so you don’t have to!
Looks like the engine number one is feathered. I managed to blow up 3 engines before taking off 🤪
On the manual , it says to keep the brakes applied until the flight enginneers says that the full power is set
Probably does :D reading manual before test flight? Nah!
@@AvAngel unfortunatly , thats the kind of payware that often , you might think its a bug but somewhere in the manual ,it explains exactly why what you are trying to do isnt working , i get it tho , i always jump for a test flight and try to figure things out on the go but this bad boy is a different beast , good video by the way
Another great Video. Your attempt to jump into the aircraft and nick it nearly ended in disaster ! I suspect the rolling to the left was due to the left hand engines being at different RPM's Just a guess without any sort of qualifications what so ever. Really want to buy this. maybe on pay day....
It’s how I do my reviews, I want to be unbiased by information and feel things out, rpm was equal on all 4 engines I believe, most likely trim. Flown it more since and didn’t experience the same thing. I’m not trying to compete with the hardcore reviewers, I’m trying to help people decide on purchases with these… the things photos on store pages don’t show, the “is this worth it” and a quick fly to feel out the handling and comment on behavioural traits from a more test pilot style than following exact numbers. I like to see if aircraft surprise me and show how difficult it would be to a user who just wants to get in and fly, which is a pretty big portion of simmers.
@@AvAngel I love the way you do the reviews. “Fly it like you just stole it” 😂 Keep up the excellent work. 👍
How come you don’t do any exterior views when you fly? Would really be nice.
I do sometimes, this one I didn't as I was a touch busy, but i did plenty on the ground, I try to get a good mix usually. That and I hate flying 3rd person XD
Need to trust that AFE.
Not always
i got back into fs2020 after u5, bought this plane... got really upset, in vr it performed horribly, outside vr it just constantly crashed the game and pmdg has a no refund policy, i thought i wasted 50 bucks.
then the day after the fs2020 u5 hotfix, pmdg released an update, vr performance improved and no more ctds. i love this plane, it is amazing...
waawu PMDG EVER THE BEST SLOW BUT SURE.

I agree. PMDG really did set the bar high for MSFS... As we all expected they would, no doubt.
I only wish they made something I would ACTUALLY WANT to fly! Airliners aren't it... A B-24 Liberator or even a B-25 Mitchell would be ideal, but c'est la vie.
Lovely review, thank you for that! Keep up the awesome work!!
How is telling everyone that it's a frame hog useful when you don't share your specs ? If I got 19fps where all there was was trees & water I would consider it unflyable. I'm sorry but I don't find this video useful for deciding a $55.00 purchase.
Very nice plane but cleary not for me. I got screwed with the CRJ and learned from my mistakes :)
Decided not to pay out fifty quid for a model with warts on the inside! Sorry PMDG. For fifty quid I don't want any warts! See, it's a small thing to fix, and seems lazy to leave it! I've left it for now!
Do i need a verry good pc for this plane?
relatively, but it performs well so i expect its going to be fairly forgiving.

Looks great as usual for PMDG, but the FPS hit is a show stopper for me. Currently the performance is already reaching annoying levels in a lot less demanding aircraft than this one. Let's see how the performance optimizations pan out that Asobo promised.
Yeah, not necessarily true, but then again, most airline simmers have dialed back general visual performacne settings to get better out of flying from major airports (A big hit overall in the sim) so if they can fly there dialed back this won't hit, if you want the visual performance, yes it will.
@@AvAngel Just a little update. I took the risk and pulled the trigger on the DC-6. The performance is much better than expected and perfectly playable (getting 22-28 FPS at the Aerosoft Paderborn-Lippstadt airport addon) and Ultra settings at 1080p. Same around larger photogrammetry cities.
It's a great aircraft and I most definitely don't regret the purchase. I will spend maaaany hours in that aircraft, simulating back country cargo deliveries. :)
For reference for others wondering about the performance: I run MSFS on an i7 8700k @ 3,7 GHz and a GeForce 1070 GTX. 1920x1080 resolution.
60 dollars is a bit much, especially for a dc6. But for pmdg, that's cheap
Is it only me or is this firekitten?
I mean... is it? :D
