  • Capturing an ILS in the PMDG DC-6 can be a little unintuitive, if you're used to flying ILS approaches in other aircraft. Today I'll be running through how to capture an ILS in the PMDG DC-6 so that you can consistently fly them every time.

    Good news ! It worked just fine :) Course was setup by FS2020 in such a way, that intercepting lozalizer was at 90º, way too sharp, DC6 overshot and turning back. Next time I'll turn to 30-45º so it's more gentle. I caught the glidescope as well :) Just more practice, it's all very fast..many commands in short period of time. Thanks for helping, much appreciated. Ronnie

    Congratulations for your great video! Just wanted to know one thing before my next flight: when in gyro mode, can the airplane's heading be controlled using the HDG dial knob? or this is only possible by using the Sperry A-12 Autopilot Control switch (Gyropilot).

    • @BobbyFuzzy

      If you’re using the default 430 you shouldn’t need to activate approach mode, it does it automatically.

    Really helpful video but how do you initiate a VLOC if only using the Bendix radios and not the Garmin?

    • @BobbyFuzzy
      @BobbyFuzzy  Před 2 lety +1

      This video was more to show the strange workaround we have to do with the Garmin. With the Bendix radios it’s like any other aircraft. Just make sure you have dialled in the ILS on NAV1, pay attention to your CDI and as you’re coming on to the localiser use localiser on the gyropilot and then approach for the glideslope. It’s a similar process but works far more reliably.

    Finally an awesome tutorial about ILS and PMDG DC-6 ! I've had various luck, with you help, I'll be a master in this subject. Just a question or two. Do you need to catch the localizer in an angle, say 45 degrees ? I've been flying straight in, same course, from far away. Maybe wrong tactics.2nd question, when should the approach light come on ? Read your post in PMDG forum,thought..Thank God, finally an answer ! Cheers, Ronnie

    • @BobbyFuzzy
      @BobbyFuzzy  Před 3 lety

      Thank you! I hope it is helpful for you. Not necessarily a smaller intercept than that would be fine and you might even get away with something bigger. I suppose flying straight in it maybe more difficult to see if the capture actually happened but it should still work. Essentially all you’re doing is giving the system a little nudge so that it starts tracking the needles. The main thing is just to make sure you’re ready for it and not distracted by anything else! Hopefully it won’t always be this way.
      Approach lights I assume you mean landing lights? I can’t remember the figure off the top of my head but they come on below around 140kts. If you check the checklist in the manual it will give you the exact figure.
      Any more questions feel free to drop them in here!
      Thanks, Rob

    One more question, it’s related to this tutorial, kind of :) Are there any keyboard shortcuts for operating the Gyro ? It would be so much quicker, I could program my iPad running Metagrid. I’d like to shortcuts for, Giro Pilot/Localizer/Approach modes + Altitude hold on/off, Auto Pilot on/off + the lever towards the floor. Any help appreciated. Ronnie

    • @BobbyFuzzy
      @BobbyFuzzy  Před 3 lety +2

      Auto pilot on off you can use the normal binds in MSFS (I used autopilot master toggle). Couple this with the realistic auto pilot dis/engage in the tablet to your taste. Other than that I don’t think so. There’s a discussion on the PMDG forums about that at the moment so maybe some better suggestions there. You might be able to use LVARs if you use AxisAndOhs or something similar though I’ve not tried that yet.

    • @BobbyFuzzy

      I am using a hat switch on my joystick so it's basically a button press. They upped the sensitivity of the trim since the latest MSFS update also which probably plays a part. I'd recommend checking out AxisAndOhs (justflight.com) for more customisation.

    Thanks for the great tutorial. Unfortunately for me I still haven't managed to successfully do an ILS approach after following your instructions. Once the needle starts moving I switch it to Localizer Mode and tap the CDI button twice, however instead of the aircraft turning towards the localizer it just starts doing circles!! I've updated the GNS 430 and checked the flight plan which is loaded correctly with the ILS approach. And yes, I activated the approach phase in it. Not sure what else I can do :(

      Hmmm! I've not flown the DC6 in a good while so not totally aware if there are any new bugs... That being said the only thing I can think of is your intercept angle? Is it steep? It can be a bit temperamental about these things! Does it work with the Bendix radios?

    Still quite buggy for me, I fly VOR to VOR exclusively, and VOR navigation often fails mid flight if I flew long haul, and to the same effect, ILS wouldn't engage at all. I tried your method, but still couldn't make them work again... Very annoying. PDMG doesn't seems to be very interested in replying my report as well, several people have the same issue as well.

    • @BobbyFuzzy
      @BobbyFuzzy  Před 2 lety

      Are you flying VOR’s using the GPS or Bendix radios? Although I haven’t used the DC6 since SU5, always works flawlessly for me with the Bendix, ILS and all.
      Problem is if you’re using the GPS, that’s more of an Asobo issue. There’s not much PMDG can do. I’d recommend trying the GNS530 mod though too if you haven’t already.
