My grandfather flew a P38 in the Pacific theater of WW2. Talking about flying this bird was about the only thing I ever saw bring a smile to his face. He couldn't even fly G>A. aircraft after flying this because he said they were like flying paper airplanes after the P38.. Cool video!

Dive recovery flaps not turn flaps and they were used to pull out of a dive from compressibility stalls. Prior to dive recovery flaps being fitted, aircraft were lost due to loss of elevator control in high speed dives which is simulated with this model if in a dive at high speed.

I flew one of these beautiful birds from Halifax Nova Scotia to Duxford Cambridge following the Greenland, Iceland, UK route and I loved every second of it and when I got the chance I always said yes to flying it
This is a really amazing looking plane for the sim, it put me right back in the cockpit. Smelling the smells, the feel of the fabrics and those dials are gorgeous it really is extremely good. The sounds are amazing, they sound just right and with the windows closed it really does sound like your sitting there with your headset on ready to go. I’m super impressed

This is a big ass plane, she’s a big girl, a beautiful big girl but she flies like aircraft half her size and she turns oh baby does she turn. Interesting review, AvAngel! I have a few questions since I really love that plane and I'm curious to hear your input on some aspects of the simulated plane.
-What did you think of the systems under the hood?
-Did you try jamming flaps or landing gear with overspeeding?
-Are there any dynamic or toggle-able malfunctions available?
-How's the handling of the plane with a single engine failure?

    • @AvAngel
      @AvAngel  Před 2 lety +1

Firstly systems are good, reasonably easy
To manage but with enough to be interesting, though no persistence per say
Didn’t try jamming the flaps or gear sorry
Standard sim malfunctions exist also engine damage and loss with effects is built in
Single engine is good when feathered, contra rotating props make it rather yaw free and it’s even reported to be able to take off single engine

VOR, ADF etc. isn't all that hard to use. Just pick two beacon frequencies (make sure they're close together on your map), measure heading to one and draw a line from it of the opposite heading, repeat for the other beacon. Your location will be at the intersection of these two lines.

Those under wing flaps your talking about aren't for maneuvering , there actually compressibility flaps so you can pull out of a high speed dive.

She's a beaut' but I always feel weird about flying military aircraft in a civilian flight sim. I feel like no matter how good the developer does, it's always half the experience...
Now if Asobo / MS decided to bring back MS Combat Flight Simulator... then that'd be something!
Imagine if you could buy a combat aircraft, and also get a civilian version to use in MSFS2020? As much as I love DCS, I usually can't justify 80 USD for a single plane.. but if that plane was cross compatible across multiple sims.. even if it wasn't a full study level aircraft.. then I could see it being a much higher value.

There was a 'passenger' variant of the P-38 known as the Droop Snoop. Originally intended as a 'pathfinder' bomber, the gun compartment was replaced by a glazed bomber nose for a bomb aimer to ride inside.
Some of these planes were purchased by oil and mining companies either to serve as VIP transports (getting someone out to a remote area quickly) or as a survey aircraft. It would be a delight to see a Droop Snoop P-38 in the lineup for use as a 'sightseeing' plane.
