- Honda has been using an upgraded battery since the Formula 1 summer break that has yielded better engine and car performance. Although the new part helped Max Verstappen claim wins at Spa and Zandvoort, it wasn't until the build-up to the Russian Grand Prix that Honda revealed details of the update. In this video Scott Mitchell explains why Honda's changes are so significant, how long they have been in the works for, and why there was nothing underhand or illegal about Honda's secrecy.

I don't really care if Honda-powered Red Bull win the championship this season or not. But this Chapter of Honda F1 programme has been one of the most amazing story in the sport. From being a laughingstock to compete directly with the King of V6 Turbo Hybrid. While also starting the development later than other manufacturers.
I think Honda can leave this sport with their heads up knowing that they have done such an incredible job, and putting Renault (and Ferrari) to shame.
Merc was previously Braun GP which was previously Honda, which makes it even more poetic if they do beat Merc
Definitely agree. The fact that no other manufacturers joined aside from Honda is proof how much of a risk it is as having any amount of lead time in development is a huge advantage in comparison to a new manufacturer as was shown when Honda was way behind at the time. Imagine if it was Renault who was the new kid on the block back then, they would of quit the sport within a few years.
The annoying thing is this story is that everyone seems to forget McLaren had a HUGE part in this as well. From not willing to adjust the chassis for the engine, not willing to budge on size-zero at first to manipulating the numbers by driving with extra downforce in free practice and thus blocking Honda in their development process.
@@ericlambart536 I think it's personal for them to defeat their old team.
Agree. This has been an amazing story.
Great visuals, shoutout to the designer of the engine components and all the graphics.
wonder when the race will be so detailed about mercedes...
@@sebastianbuse4899 Any Merc improvement is considered bad for the spot
Was going to comment the same. Excellent, excellent job to the producers!
Right
@@sebastianbuse4899 This detailed schematic and explanation is generic for all F1 cars. Only the fact that the new Honda storage module has higher capacity, introduced a few races ago, is specific to Honda.
It is a shame Honda worked so hard to get back to a competitive position in F1, only to quit the sport at the end of this year.
its a shame, but not surprising. they've done this many times. the exact same cycle. frankly 10 years or so down the road if they announce they are coming back, rather than fan fare they should be told to piss off and stop wasting people's time
They know no matter how hard they will work they won't be the preferred team by the FIA, Mercedes and other teams will always be lobbying against them because they're not ''a European'' cool car manufacturer.
they pulled out last time only for brawn to then go on and win the title with their platform then merc come in and purchase brawn.
@@The_808 Or that most of their prestige comes from MotoGp.
Because Red Bull sucks, as a company. Honda will be back sometime in the future I guarantee.
Honda- We work quietly and bring upgrades to our engines.
Ferrari- Let's have a grande media announcement about the engine upgrades we would bring.
Appreciate the presentation of the internals of the engine. Made it more easier to understand.

We can't keep up

But Mercedes went ahead to produce the most potent and efficient power unit f1 has ever seen.

Ferrari has engine problems every practice.
@@klyplays But it aint tho
Ferrari has their way of presenting things, you dont have to like it but no need to make up things.
The Honda name will likely still be in F1 for 2022. They will continue to build motors for Red Bull in Sakura Japan for 2022 while Red Bull Powertrains gets up to speed. They are just finalizing the marketing aspect of it. The car will likely say "Powered by Honda" or something like that instead of just Honda.
Also, almost everyone from the Honda F1 engine development team is moving to Red Bull Powertrains. It is a shame the announcements from Honda in Japan are not reported in the English speaking world.
Brand it Mugen
Keep dreaming bud
RB got a killer deal with their Honda power relationship considering they kept Aston Martin logo on the car last year
Fantastic technical analyst of a component I hadn't cared about since the dawn of the era. Easy to follow, stellar visuals, and just overall a dang good presentation. Hats off guys.
Agreed! Made me think...What if F1 made their rules more conducive to electrification...required more of the power to come from the battery while still pushing ICE technology? Walking that tightrope...F1 can do better. It would drive both areas and keep OEMs like Honda in the game, and encourage others like VW to enter. It's a hard sell to invest in an F1 program when the world is moving electric.
@@sports2hedz542 That is exactly what the are doing!
@Michael Sullivan but they're taking baby steps. they need to make leaps. otherwise they will never get other oems (who themselves have committed to leaps) to join
Would love to see a Honda logo remain somewhere on the car in the future, just as a homage, especially if Max goes on to win the championship
Me too,I love Honda ☺️
I'd take a simple stylized H on the RB livery.
I assume Red Bull Powertrains logo on the PU cover, rear wing, and elsewhere that presently holds the logo or Honda text, but we'll find out.
Honda doesn't want their logo to be on a F1 car
Honda don't want to be associated with gas guzzling
So… Verstappen’s next road legal car will be an hybrid Honda jazz type R?
I’m all for it!
As long as somebody doesn't crash it during social media filming. I'm looking at you Romain Grosjean!
Its the only year Honda has had this large of a livery presence on an F1 car ever and they are throwing that ultimate marketing visual away by leaving just when they are about to win the championship
Yeah it's a shame. They're such a small company. They could really use the publicity!
The thing is though, a large part of why they're doing so well is because they decided to really go all out this year since it's their last in the sport so they want to go out with a bang, which is probably also the reason they've got a larger livery presence this year. I'd imagine they're pouring a lot more money into this year's engine than they normally would be able to sustain
They'll be back. Honda has constantly been in and out of the sport since the 1960s.
Hats up for Honda's loyalty and determination.
They've done so much more than their competitors with so much less time. Truly incredible. Hope they come back to the sport some day.
Its so weird. This is the year where Honda announced they leave. And it seems also that this is the year they finally take F1 seriously and put hard work into it.
I just dont understand them. :O
No, this is Honda’s last year so it’s been saving all it’s developed technology for this year to give RB the best chance it has try for both championships
They saved it all for this season. Because Mercs look beatable compared to last seasons.
@@LordOfTheBored yeah that 2020 Merc was unbelievable fast
Honda has been working very hard all these years, but it’s taken them a lot of time to get the right organizational structures in place, and they started off on the back foot with a rushed product based on a flawed concept. This year is where all the hard work has finally come together into a complete package that’s up there with the best. Honda’s decision to leave F1 sadly doesn’t have anything to do with their performance on track; it’s a corporate decision pure and simple.
Honda need the engineers for development of future roadcar technology, like battery EV, fuelcells and alternative and synthetic fuels.
Shame that Honda's walking away just as their F1 project is bearing fruit.
That's how they'll be legends forever
Plus, they decided to bring their A game after the decision to leave. You can really only respect that mentality. "One last hurrah"
Actually makes a lot of sense looking at the fact that they've had to wait for so long to finally get some brand display (which they probably paid extra for), even though the credits are next to zero from the main stream audience and media.
Honda in the US suffered really big blows the last couple of years with sales. Seems like they're really relying on the F1 tech to introduce something new to the car market for commercial sales. They've fallen behind some of the biggest competitors they have, and Indycar is really their main goal anyway.
Don't forget Honda is also developing next years engine (2022) as a parting gift to RB, but it won't be branded as Honda. If RB don't win this year, i think it'll definitely win next year - with the unbranded Honda engine..
We should all be thankful that Honda are in F1, even though it'll just be their PU that lives on till 2026 after they leave. They entered this complex era at least 2 years behind development than the other manufacturers, and now they have produced an engine that's at least as good as the Mercedes (probably better) whilst Ferrari and Renault still languish behind. They managed to chase down the Mercedes bullet train. Very impressive. F1 is less without Honda.
Many knew there was something different about performance with RB. They denied it though
Yes, there a difference between "being shrewd", as this programme says, and lying.
@@villiamo3861 I think he's referring to them denying the performance upgrade before it actually arrived, crazy how that works.
The animator deserves a raise.
These videos are just amazing keep the good work 👍

Honda is really leaving on a high note.

Nice to finally understand regs of the battery system. “Charging” now makes sense since they can only charge 1/2 as much as they can use per lap.
They seem unnecessarily regulated, prohibiting relevant battery technology development.
@@keeganclarke6475 limitations are created to give drivers greater control over rear brakes. MGU-H can charge a battery without any limit.
@@keeganclarke6475 that isnt a real problem anyways.
@@Gl-my8fw I disagree. They have limits on charging and on discharging (except with the mgu-h turbine spool). It is entirely reasonable to expect that this makes the battery less useful that it could be, for if it could carry a greater capacity or discharge at a higher rate then straightline performance could be improved. Battery technology is going to feature in all commercial vehicles in some form or another, so it would make sense for F1 to incentivise the development of battery tech. Instead the FIA has limited the two key factors of maximum charge and maximum rate of discharge.
@@keeganclarke6475i hope you do know cars wont be going electric as quick as many pretend. Their goals are not feasible and the environmental reasoning is greatly exaggerated.
First update to that part since 2015, that’s mad
Yeah. It’s also not true…
Maybe first time they have changed the cell block and cells, but there were major design changes to the ES packaging, including the electronics in 2016 and 2017.
Great explanation
Fascinating! Thank you. It's a shame that Honda is going, especially now they're looking so good.
Everything Toto says: He's just sandbagging, that can't be true
Everything Red Bull Honda say: Oh wow, that's really interesting, we are really glad you shared that, thank you.
Really shows how much just wanting Merc to lose permeates through the mind of many "F1 fans".
That's how Mercedes have portrayed themselves in these years . When they say Redbull are close they used to get 1-2 the following race ( 2020 season).
That's what is in the minds of people
@@rishinaik4326 There's nothing worse than being blinded by biased optics, though. Regardless of it being within the rules, what Honda have done is making a mockery of ALL the so-called 'cost cutting' measures. Is F1 cutting costs or not? One minute everyone is getting put to the back of the grid for engine changes, and then the very next week, apparently, batteries are not an integral part of an engine in 2021?? Someone tell that to Elon Musk 😂 They have thrown so much money into this one aspect of the battery, when it won't count for nothing come next season. They did exactly the same thing in 2009, and it was Ross Brawn who cleaned up that time. How is it far when certain manufacturers can be adding parts with just 7 races to go?! Very interesting info.
Most likely went with a higher V system, similar to how the latest gen electric cars have gone to 800V for faster charge/discharge and longer battery life. Maybe even went up to 1200V. Higher V means less heat and smaller wiring which mean less cooling which both weight less, allowing for more batteries
There is a 1000V upper-limit on the ERS system (Tech Regs 5.12.5). If higher voltage = less weight & less heat, you can be certain they are all already running at the maximum voltage allowed!
@@johnbentley1986 If i am not wrong, ferrari finally upgraded their system from 400V to 800V last race in Sochi so i guess its not that simple
I think Ferrari has a 1000V system now. But probably don't want to admit it publicly. 400V is seen in road cars for years already.
@@johnbentley1986 voltage don't lover battery weight only weight of wires, and MGU components because the amperage is lower. Voltage is a product of serial and parallel connections between battery cells. Capacity is dependent only of the number of cells.

It's crazy that literally everyone reveals their secrets except for Mercs
because the mercs still have way more power than all other cars. atleast significantly. you can see how little downforce redbull runs with to even try and keep up, whilst mercedes run massive rear wings and can still go faster at the top end.

IIRC Honda's battery was one of its most criticized problems in its McLaren days because it would run out of juice and start harvesting before the end of the straight, killing the car's top speed exactly when the driver needed it the most to defend (or, on very rare occasions, attack). I find it very interesting that Honda has only just now upgraded its battery elements, even though the complaints about its battery's early harvesting disappeared a long time ago.

Hard to believe how far Honda have come since 2015
I would be more interested in knowing the physical size of the battery? Is it regulated or only the weight? Using 'super capacitors' as part of 'battery' the charge can be almost instantaneous with a drain to slowly charge main battery which will increase it's lifespan. As carbon nanotube technology is progressing, 'super caps' can be more easily factored into the equation.
'Super caps' have been used for many years in city buses so there is a precedent (and probably why Tesla purchased the largest US super cap manufacturer in 2019)
If Honda is supplying power units to red Bull, they are only partly removed so developments are not wasted.
It will be interesting to watch Pierre for the remainder of the season since becoming aware of the upgrade. Max is a Bull to begin with so it’s expected he may be running at the limit anyway but how does Pierre respond???…….
