- The Subaru isn't just the only affordable mid-sized off-road wagon in America, it's the only affordable midsize wagon period. For 2017 Subaru has tweaked the go-anywhere wagon with adjusted trim levels to sweeten the deal further. If you're looking for a quirky alternative to a run of the mill CR-V or RAV4, this is it.

Difficult to find better car reviews on CZcams. Great job
Yeah what he said
*Imagine having Alex as your car salesman.*
*You'd be at the dealership for a whole week learning about the car.*
LMAO!!! So true.. But when you leave the dealership, you'll be very satisfied with your purchase.... Alex on Autos I am sure you already know how we, your viewers, appreciate your style of reviews.
I am graduating from a 5 speed manual 1998 Subaru Outback wagon with over 250,000 miles on it to a practically brand new 2017 Outback with a six speed automatic transmission and I love it.
I turned 16 and my grandma got me this car! And now I'm going and looking at review thinking I'm cool. Btw it's a great car
Dang must be nice to have someone buy your cars haha how do you like it being 3 years later any problems?
Your grandma is the best
Probably the most detailed, fair, and informative car review I’ve seen on CZcams. I purchased my Outback today as a matter of fact. Thank you!
Ive just got one this week. Best car you can buy. It does everything.
@@oddities-whatnot - I am getting my, unfortunately only 2015 next week!
I'll never understand why would someone dislike this highly detailed free review?
Have a 2014 outback 2.5 limited. Best car ever at 90500k miles. I love the versatility
114k miles now no issues!
how helpful and thorough was that! 6 years later and you're still helping guys like me out. thanks Alex.
Looks like a very practical, all-round car to have. Thanks for reviewing it, along with all the bells and whistles that comes with what looks like a high trim package. I was at an autoshow that featured that vehicle and I'm amazed that there are very little blind spots on this vehicle. You can actually see what's outside of you without depending on a camera to direct you. I wish many cars these days are like this, along with being well-built and car-like.
This was an extremely professional, thorough and accurate review. I will watching your videos from here on out. Thank you for putting these together. I really appreciate you attention to detail.
Top quality and comprehensive car review with no padding. Buying my 2017 soon... in 2022. This review added massively to my already extensive research. Well done and thank you for your time.
I laughed at the trunk comfort index. If you plan on being kid-napped anytime soon lets hope it's in an Outback!
This is the best Subaru outback review I have seen so far! Great presentation and explanation of the essentials. Thank you!
Just got a 3.6R - loving it!
The difference with Subaru and the others is Subaru actually [want] to make a better vehicle. Most brands are happy to meet the lowest bar to compete but Subaru strives to raise the highest bar. We are very happy with the Outback and bought two. The best car for Canadian driving.
YES FINALLY A REVIEW OF THE OUTBACK!:)
Excellent review, thanks
Picking my Outback this week!
Dude your videos are so detailed, I just bought an outback limited because this gave me all the info I needed! Thank you!
Nice review. Your reviews are the most thorough and detailed I've seen. Thank you. Keep up the good work & continued success!
Highly detailed description of the vehicle. Superior review * * * * * 5 Stars!! Sets the standard for every other reviewer!!
Wow. Just wow. Alex, your video on the Outback was the most thorough and easiest to watch. Amazing review. Thank you for helping me on making a better decision when it comes to purchasing an Outback! I'm a subscribing to your channel!
Been waiting for this! Thank you Alex!
Great reviews, high quality, no hype, the way it should be, thanks! Great that you do you homework and know and list your biases!
Very informative and straight-forward delivery. Good job!
I've been waiting for you to do this review thank you very much. No one else on the Internet does reviews like you
These are hands down the best videos for helping us buy a new car. Thanks for your hard work!!
I really enjoyed the review. I dig my Outback and will probably stick with Subaru for the rest of my driving!😎
great presentation and editing. the whole production is better than any other review videos ive seen.
Alex, this truly is the most detailed and excellent vehicle review out there. I will be checking out your other videos as well now.
Thank you for the review. We just purchased the 2017 Outback limited 3.6L . Awesome vehicle!! Very quite in the cabin.
Owned plenty of cars and my 2016 outback 2.5 is the most practical of them all.CVT no problems at all, oil consumption low, road holding great, comfort excellent and drivability number one.
Another detailed and awesome review. Keep up the good work 👍
Thank you so much for years of excellent reviews. Very informative, unbiased and comprehensive. I think another thing that helps is every review is in the same format i.e exterior, engines, seats etc so it is easy to compare different vehicles.
you provide the best car reviews anywhere for people who are actually in the market and need to inform themselves on existing cars in the market.
The new touring trim is really nice on the Outback. My mom bought her first Subaru, a 2015 Outback 2.5 Limited in December of '14 and in October she traded it in for the new 2017 Outback 3.6 Touring in brilliant brown with the saddle leather interior. It's super sharp on the inside and she really likes the extra oomph of the 6 cylinder. It doesn't seem to drone like the 4 cylinder would under heavy acceleration. Plus Subarus hold their value well or it did in her case. She used the guaranteed trade in value program they have and with 21,000 miles on hers at trade she got better than the KBB excellent price at the time and it gave her plenty of equity to go towards the 17. I have been very impressed with Subaru in general based on her experiences and would consider purchasing/leasing one when my current lease is up. Hopefully they have CarPlay by then.
dude.. this review is on point. and I rarely say that about car reviewers. great job!
Thank you for one of the best comparison and real world review of this car.
Thank you. This is an amazingly detailed and thorough review.
A very thorough, articulately expressed review, thank you!
Best review of the Outback I've seen. You didn't get much into the infotainment stuff like most others do, but you really nailed what I needed to know about drivability, handling, power, etc. I especially liked how you compared the Outback to it's competitors. Few other reviewers do that unless it's specifically an A vs B review they are doing. I'm not sure if I could handle the lower and more reclined seating posture of the outback, but I am definitely interested in trying it out now. I'm not sure if you might not want to get a little more into what the significance of the boxer engine is and how it would be different from what you would find in the Volvo or the Volkswagen, but I liked how you covered the all wheel drive (Subaru Symmetrical All Wheel Drive) quite well. Thanks too for pointing out the pros and cons of the binocular camera collision avoidance vs the radar in other brands. Awesome work - not just a professional-level review, but a bench mark that even well-established reviewers like Consumer Reports could do well to emulate. Other main stream youtube reviewers don't even come close to your work.
Another great review Alex on a car that I wish to own..
Finally the Outback video arrived and Thx Alex for this deep detail show for Outback and Yes Outback do available 2.0T engine in other market but in the U.S and it should be available in the future.
3.6 touring is a must. Just my opinion. When merging into traffic at highway speeds that is when the 6 cylinder really shines.
What a great review, have subbed
Great coverage, pros and cons. Thank you.
2016 Subaru Outback 2.5 Limited. Best car I ever owned. So reliable and comfortable.
I agree but you can't really measure reliability after 1 year of ownership.
For your drives
Sell your home and live in it.
Got a 2017...could not agree with you more!
How's it holding up, and also how is the power? 175 hp doesn't seem like much for something this size, I'm just curious.
Alex, I just returned to this review as a refresher on the Outback. Very good and detailed as always. I think Subaru must have heard you and others, because from what I understand, the 2019 has some improvement in sound deadening and other factors.
I’m holding out for the 2020 model this summer, crossing fingers that it will get the Ascent’s turbo. Hoping that you will compare that vehicle to Murano and Edge which seem to be more in its category.
I took a brief test drive in an Outback at the Houston Auto Show this year. It was my first time to drive a Subaru and I have to admit, I really enjoyed the car. It wasn't a very long drive but after reading all the comments on how slow the 4 cylinder was, I was pleasantly surprised at how well this car seemed to perform. I know it's no hot rod but seemed more than adequate for anything I'd need. As for the CVT, I don't see the problem. I've driven other CVT equipped cars and never had any issues with this droning thing so many seem to complain about. I wasn't in the Outback long enough to get a good read on it but it seemed fine to me. One of the roads we drove down was in pretty poor condition. The Outback just floated over the bumps and potholes. Way better than my Rav4 would have done. I tell you, the Outback is definitely toward the top of my list the next time I'm in the market to buy!
I just bought a 2019 outback 4 cylinder and it has more than enough adequate power. Friggin people want to be race car drivers.
I just got a 2017 premium 2.5 and it's perfectly fine, and that was going up and down mountains in Utah. If you want a fast car, you don't look at the Outback.
@@jeebus022 Here is the thing. I just bought a 2019 outback in April and it is a 2.5. When I hit the gas that car moves fast. Some people may think I am crazy but I am telling you the truth. I do not tow anything and that engine is more than adequate power. Love the car. If people want real power, go with the 6 cylinder. I am quite content with the 4 cylinder.
I have a 2015 rav4. I'm thinking about trading it in for the new outback. Maybe get the xt . I think the xt can tow 3500. If not its 2700.
@@smallnuts2 - I think you're right, the turbo engine is rated a bit higher for towing although I've read some things that suggest caution when towing with a CVT transmission. That's not necessarily a Subaru thing, but with CVT's in general. I would also consider the turbo engine but I live down at sea level so it's not really a necessity. Now if I lived up in the mountains, the XT would be a the top of my list.
Love your detailed reviews
I love the segment comparisons. Thanks
Awesome!!video very detailed and thats why i'am going to subscribe.....and thanks for sharing
So informative and helpful. Thanks! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
this review is so good that I am an instant sub
I liked the video, nice and in depth. I got a great laugh about Subaru putting the alternator being up high for off road use. Subaru has always it up top on its flat fours. My 78' Subaru wagon has it in the same exact spot. Thanks for the smile and the good review.
Excellent and detail video, well done.
Great review Alex.
This is the best auto review. Lots of good info without feeling like you're reading through the press pamphlets. Good comparison with other vehicles.
Such an in-depth review. Thanks!
FINALLY!
one point tho:
- H6 is actually quieter than H4.
The six-cylinder engine is every bit as smooth and quiet as the in-line six engines I owned for 20 years from BMW. While it does get worse fuel economy than the four-cylinder, the improvement in quietness, smoothness and acceleration are well worth the price of fuel economy.
@@michaelhughett8396 the bigger engine is definitely not as smooth and quiet. Don’t tell folks that
Having owned one for 60,000 miles As well as 6 6-cylinder BMWs,I think I am qualified to voice my honest opinion.
Thanks for the amazing car review!
Best car review on youtube! i hope you can do a car seat test for this suv and a full review for the honda crv 2017, car seat test as well.
Very informative review. I hope you'll be reviewing the Forester as well soon.
The best review yet.
Great video, very helpful. Cheers!
We have a 2014 model, last year of the previous generation. When we were shopping, we looked at the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, Honda CRV, Mazda CX 5 and the Outback. With 2 little ones, cargo area was almost top priority, and Alex is right on with his observation that the cargo area of an Outback is the same size as a Grand Cherokee. When I told the Mazda guy we were also looking at the Outback, the look on his face immediately dropped and admitted they were great cars.
Dan Hall same reaction when I told the Honda guy, I was looking at a Crosstrek, over the HRV
Excellent Review as always 👍. Will you be doing 2017 Subaru Impreza anytime soon ? Thanks
awesome review!
Finally-someone explains driver seating position. Thanks.
Thank you for that excellent review.
Fantastic review.
The best review on the outback
This is an articulate review. Thanks for that.
I bought one of these this year and we love it. We opted for the upscale interior and it is nicer than most of the comparable foreign alternatives. The safety features make it easy for our son to drive if needed and I feel better about him being safe. We have the 3.6 L engine and it rides great on the highway with plenty of go.
How is the Outback holding up? Any problems?
Awesome review
I think the only thing missing is I wanted to see the back of the front center console
But awesome video
Alex is the Phd of Automotive reviews!
👍🏼 very informative review thanks
Excellent video
Pretty good stuff for potential buyers of Subaru like me. Thanks!
Great review! I live in Santa Cruz too and recognize those roads. Small world.
Nice and honest review! Will you do a car seat review for outback? Thx.
Thanks for the good review.
Great review.
Best review out there
I’m really impressed with this vehicle. My Sister bought one, and now I’m more understanding. She made a great decision.
2017 outback 2.5i limited love it so much!
Pretty sure the center differential coupling can lock fully in the auto and cvt transmissions, if you are spinning or engage xmode. The 5/6 speed manuals had viscous couplings and did not fully lock (excluding the STI 6MT).
i do love the reviews,,but ya have a great day
Alex,
Have always been a fan of your in depth reviews. Have to say though that I think the comparisons here missed the mark. I’m hopeful that when you conduct a review of the 2020 model you will put it up against 2 row midsized crossovers like Edge, Murano and new Blazer. Looking forward to that!
Excellent, honest, balanced review. Narrowed my choices to Outback and RAV4.
No better car in New England. Very informative reviews
i have 2016 2.5 ,, im getting 750 klm per tank on hwy,,, and the ride is great ,, i live with the car ,, just dont drive it for fw days,,,, i love my car,,,,, the h6 is only 1-2 mph dif,,, the awd is great,,,, eyesight is the best,,,,, out of 72 cars, ,,,,,,, safety is first rated,, love my car,,,,the cvt is fine,, good mid range power,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,remember i drive it evry day,, not just few days and do a review,,,, subie is the best.....................i live in saskatchewan canada,,, we had 1 foot of snow just few weeks ago,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,no problem,,
Yippee you tested a base fuel-sipping engine like I would probably buy - lower price in not one but two areas. I also like that you spend time mentioning how a base or mid trim on the options list would fare comparably, even while you test the high option ones too. Kudos!
this is the car I will get next. I like my boxy Ford escape but I need little extra room and I don't need full size suv with 3 rows. outback is just right.
Thank you Alex for your excellent and in depth reviews.
I am thinking about getting a 2018 outback touring. Subaru is claiming of better handling in normal conditions and reduced cabin noise. As there are not many in depth reviews of 2018 outback yet , I would love to hear your take on that along with majority of Northwest and New England ;)
I currently own 2 Outbacks as my two cars I own. The "family" one is the H6; and the "commuter" one is the H4. Both are great. The H4 however is LOUD; I'm going to get dynamat for it.. and it is a bit tuned too soft; a bit floaty. I changed the rear sway bar to a 20mm.
Thanks once again. Could you post video on Subaru Ascent please
Great Review Alex. I totally agree. They need to at least off the turbo 2.0L from the Forester. I don't think sales would decrease on either one.
Great review. I'm planning on buying an outback or Forester ... which is which ??? Regards from Nairobi, Kenya
I have had my 17 Outback premium 2.5 for 1 year with 30,000+ miles an no problems other than minor trim defects. I have taken it on the Mojave road here in so cal 2 times this year including the 3 foot water crossing. I have also done most of Diablo in Anza Borrego(traction control cannot be fully disabled just dulled). It’s been on three wheels several times on trails most comparable would drive past. I drive it over the Ortega highway back and forth to work daily and get 30 mpg average. I did upgrade the rear sway bar to the 21mm STI version and it drives awesome. Not time coolest but probably the best car l have ever owned and the best value.
I was wondering if it would make sense to always compare with a CRV and RAV4, because really I think that's the competition most people would be thinking of-- not an Accord. It would certainly be what I am comparing with. Great videos.
