    DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
    Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
    To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
    To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
    For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

      I still remember when lets go first came out and I theorycrafted how good zippy zap(exclusive electric priority move that always crit) Pikachu would be if it was real.
      My conclusion was that Pikachu would be either top tier UU or BL simply for having one of the strongest unboosted priority moves in the history of pokemon, but wouldn't quite make it into OU due to Lando-T existing.

      Also admittedly Pikachu was incredibly dangerous with Surf and Lightball in Gen 2. Technically second only to Mewtwo. If it could take a hit it would have been the most powerful non boosted offensive mon in OU.

Obviously would be better if it could hard switch in but really not a big deal. Honestly better being fast and frail than slow and strong. • @Daxcheese555
    @Daxcheese555 Před 4 lety +87

    In Gen 1 Dugtrio is actually a decent anti-lead and underrated overall. It hard counters Jolteon and Gengar, and its speed tie with Alakazam means it becomes a 50/50 battle. It loses the battle against Jynx, but threatens Jynx with OHKO crit earthquake or normal earthquake and then finish off the job with the pokemon after Dugtrio faints. If Dugtrio survives, he's a great end-game sweeper since he can't be paralyzed and outspeeds almost all of the base metagame anyways.

      Weezing I feel would have been very good up until Gen 4 with the introduction of Gravity, and slowly become RU in Gen 5 with the addition of the Smack Down move.
      He would likely be a suicidal bomber sort of member, using Explosion, Memento, Destiny Bond, etc. if a Psychic type were swapped in.
      Or perhaps a tanky member similar to one of my favorite Pokemon, Dusknoir, with moves such as Will o' Wisp, Pain Split, Toxic, and Substitute.
      Overall, I think he was quite good up until Gen 5, then became more relevant in Gen 6 with the introduction of Fairy-types.

    I would like to mention that Dugtrio is possibly the best Primal Groudon counter (unless it Rock Polishes). Yveltal going for a slow u-turn and then going into Dugtrio to Z Tectonic Rage is actually a really nice niche that also helps with Dusk Mane Necrozma, and Dugtrio's mementos let Xerneas set up and steamroll a team. Overall, Dugtrio's niche in the Ubers format probably should have been brought up as one of the best P Don countermeasures.

      RinX the mega is a pretty good speed demon with a good typing that gets rid of fairies and dark types. Bug poison is also a good defensive typing, having a quad resistance to fighting, but you can also use crobat who doesn't take up a mega slot, gets access to leech life anyway, and also quad resisting bug and having a ground immunity unless it uses roost. Mega beedrill still has the hand of not being weak to mega mane, which is one of the biggest threats in UU and the reason you're actually better off with beedrill as opposed to crobat. Yeah, crobat gets the better typing but not when it in return gets a weakness to a huge UU threat like mane.

      -gen3= really good and ascended to the meta thanks to Levitate + Wil-o-Wisp
      -gen4= still good, but lack of reliable recovery made it outclassed compared to new walls
      -gen5= another victim of power creep...so it dropped to being "meh"
