  • Casey Putsch finishes building a replica of the motorcycle from Top Gun. The bike is a 1984 Kawasaki GPZ900 that had a basic restoration and is accurately finished as the same motorcycle ridden by Tom Cruise playing the character Maverick. Feel the need for speed! @Casey: If you find the handling a bit heavy, flip your rear axle adjuster 180 degrees in the swingarm to raise the rear of the bike. That extra inch or so of rear height surprisingly makes a big difference in steering by putting a bit more weight on the front end. Enjoy the ride!

About your petcock: PRI is not "Primary" - it's "Prime". As in, "bypass the automatic vacuum shutoff and let fuel flow into the carb float bowls after maintenance or when time has passed and the fuel has evaporated out of the carbs." I always thought it meant "primary" too.
You have three positions: On, Reserve, and Prime. On uses the standard fuel pickup. Reserve uses the reserve pickup, which is lower than the standard fuel pickup. Prime also uses the reserve pickup.
So....when you're out riding, thinking that "hey I'm great, the fuel is set to PRImary", when you actually run out of gas and switch to reserve....there isn't any reserve, because you used it all up having your petcock set to PRIME. You then get to push your bike 2.5 miles uphill to the nearest gas station.
    Ask me how I know. :) :)
    Experience is the best teacher....

Additionally if you PARK the bike on pri there's always so e fuel pressure on the carbs Kawasaki s are known for this to cause the carbs to leak I to the cylinder and can cause a hydrolock when you try to start it

I had this beast back in 1989.(blue version)..with a short open Yoshimura race-pipe...man...the sound was the most brutal and most nice sound I ever heard until today on all motorcycles..(@ low rpm's...he sounded like a nice growling bear but when the higher you went in rpm's...the bike started to howl like a wulf...it was really unbelievable...my wife even could hear me miles away..).and I had the fastest...after this one...like...the Suzuki GSXR1100....the Suzuki GSX1000R K8 and the Suzuki B-King.

I had read that the F-14 took 24 hours of maintenance for every hour of flight. Maintenance hogs for sure.
Yes, we sold several (80) F-14's to Iran. When that was finally admitted to be a massive mistake, the US technicians in Iran left with rumors that they had sabotaged the fleet during their hasty exit. Turns out the Iranians just didn't have the technical skills to keep them running and the planes started failing immediately. Then parts became a problem, because we certainly weren't selling them any. Underground deals were made for parts from all over the world. Then the US started camping down on those too, including seizing F-14's from static displays and movie production houses saying they contained potentially useful parts that could end up in Iranian hands. Iran ran out of the missiles that the F-14's were designed to fire early on (Phoenix missiles I think?) and the majority of radars failed soon after that. Rumor is that there are still some flying, actually more now than there was at their lowest, by using alternative technology and components and the Iranians are now advanced enough to work on late 60's technology.
Want to get a federal charge? Start inquiring on how to buy F-14 parts.

Iran purchased a number of F14s in the mid 70s, under the rule of the Shah, before the revolution and the ayatollah. The avionics were down-graded, but they still performed well. In fact the record holder for air to air kills in an F14 is Iranian, Jalil Zandi. All American examples of the aircraft are not only retired, but actually destroyed to prevent any parts from finding their way to Iran.

Pro tip with stickers and decals: use distilled water with a few drops of dish soap (surfactant) in a spray bottle. Spray the surface where you want the sticker good and wet. Place the sticker where you want it, carefully peeling the backing as you smooth it down. That very thin layer of water will allow you to gently slide the sticker to make very fine adjustments and ensure there are no air bubbles. Once positioned where you need it, put a finger at the top and use a rubber squeegee or even a credit card to squeegee the water out in a downward direction. You don't have to get all the water out, so don't go crazy, just make sure there are no large bubbles. The remaining water will evaporate out by capillary action and the sticker adhesive is in perfect contact with the surface. If there are any water bubbles left, hit it with a hair dryer.
BTW, love the bike. I've been riding a 1996 GPz1100 since 2002 and am working on rolling the odometer over for the second time.

As a matter of history related to President Carter's 55 mph speed limit, his home state, Georgia, already had a 55 mph limit on most state roads at night. The white speed limit signs on most two-lane roads used reflective paint that displayed 60 mph by day and 55 mph at night when, apparently, the headlights hit the sign from a different angle.
As a teenager in a car-focused community like Dawsonville, GA, we questioned the national cost for changing all the speed limit signs and whether or not the old signs were recycled. To further express our displeasure, we created black stencils of the numeral "1" all scaled to the various sizes of speed limit signs. We upped the speed limits by 100 mph using our "1's" and other stencils that set the spacing. Now, before you point out that the signs had to be changed again after our prank, let me point out that all the numerals were cut from black tape and left no residue. At the same time, the speed changing signs of the pre-55 days could be permanently set at 60 mph day and night by egging the sign. The yolk disabled the reflective qualities of the paint.

Brilliant job. My only negative is it would look much better with standard exhaust of four into two. Looks more balanced. Some bikes suit a four into one, not the gpz900r nor its later incarnation the zzr1100. Vice versa the suzuki gsxr1000 with a four into two looks wrong, don't know why it just does. Enjoyed this project and thanks for your hard work making this video. Thanks, vinny. :-)

You are making a movie bike by adding a bunch of logos, paint and pinstriping, but won't remove the one Kawasaki logo that is getting in the way and by it's removal would make it screen accurate....... Odd decision.
Otherwise, if you spray soapy water on the surface before placing the sticker, you can slide them around a bit and also get the bubbles out easier.
Plus, if you keep them taped in place, you can cut off half the backing then let then flop back down without having to put any effort in keeping the same positioning.

Has Tom made you an offer for this bike ? Or maybe he already owns the original 😮
