IDK where the idea that the pills had congealed came from. His memoir just mentions that he had trouble getting just one because of his mittens.
Either way though, my personal suspicion is that he didn't actually take all 30 at the start, but rather continued to take some as he went. The idea of him taking enough at once for it to still be affecting him after 2 weeks, but not dying immediately, seems incredibly unlikely. It's entirely possible for him to have not remembered accurately, because meth, or for him to have just not really wanted to admit to a more or less immediate addiction after his first big dose, likely more than 1 pill but probably not 30.

It seems unlikely that his fellows would have allowed him to keep the rest of the meth if they saw he was sky high, so to me it seems far more likely that there was some sort of an initial oopsie that he for some reason or another simply survived. If they took away his knife and his ammo, they'd have arm-wrestled the bottle away from him as well, don't you think, seriously?
@@TheObscureRambler who knows. It wouldn't surprise me if they didn't think of that. More importantly, most drugs have, effectively, a half-life within the body, similar to radioactive decay. The estimates for the half-life of meth are 3-24 hours, depending on stuff and what you reference. If we go off the 24 hour one, and pretend that the entire situation isn't far messier, what with meth metabolites themselves having effects, and reservoir effects, and other stuff, Aimo would have initially had ~16,384 times the meth concentration in him that he had at the end. I'm definitely not a biologist, but if he was still substantially affected by the amount of meth in him after 2 weeks, then 16 thousand times that amount seems completely and utterly unsurvivable.
In the end, it's just a matter of what's most probable with the evidence we have on hand. I don't know what happened, even Aimo himself barely knew what happened. To me it seems far more likely that the detail about him taking all the meth at once right at the beginning was incorrect, potentially faulty memory, potentially wilful deceit, no matter what amount of negligence that would seem to require. Even if it were a horrendously negligent thing, which I don't even really think it was. I doubt they were counting on him being gone the next thing they knew, and on his own for 2 weeks. The actual weapons are a far more immediate risk to a person having a severe overdose than the possibility of them reaching into their pocket to take more of the drug they're overdosing on. In the order of what I think I would personally think of first, getting the bottle out of his pocket would not be anywhere near the top of the list, particularly had I been on patrol for 3 days, incredibly tired, and still in danger of being found and killed by Russians.
@@markandrew5968plus, in the 30s/40s, they reacted differently to addictions than they do now. In addition, as you mentioned, they are cold, tired, being chased by Soviets that would kill them, surviving in the frozen middle of nowhere... their priorities probably are different than we'd think of today 😂😂
