Calathea Ecuadoriana: New Rare Calathea, Heat Stress

  • I received a new, rare Ecuadoriana a week ago. Unfortunately, the plant experienced some pretty extreme heat stress on its way here but it is really starting to bounce back. Pot up this plant with me while I go over some of its origins, taxonomy information, and what I did to treat this plant for heat stress.

I am watching this video because I am in a course studying Ecuadorian flora. I knew we had (here in Ecuador) many things, but day after day I realize that we know nothing about what we have here. Thanks for sharing.

Very informative. I didn't know heat stress was something that could damage a plant. Some of my favorite plants originate in Ecuador and it's at the top of my list of places I want to visit!

Unfortunately--heat stress is one of those things that really affects plants in my area. Well, it affects people, too. With the plants' roots being bare, they were more vulnerable and I think they got cooked a little. Ecuador has amazing plants! I'd love to visit there and Chile!

Nice. I haven't come across this calathea and according to wiki, this plant is near threatened. It looks like zebrina between warscewiczii. I have ordered a few that I able to find within the country. Pseudo veitchiana, Cynthia, Silver Plate Pink, Facsiata 'Borussica', Bella, Flamestar, Maui Queen, and Lubbersiana. Today I just got 2 x Red maranta, Eclipse and Illustris!

also it's a pity at where you are to have the plant risked being shipped in harsh weather condition, either too cold or too warm. :(

We get pretty intense heat waves. It's great for growing food but dangerous for plants not accustomed to it--hopefully it ends soon! Congratulations on your calatheas! I just ordered a Cynthia myself--it is really nice to see more cultivars back on the market. Question is--do you have a favorite among them yet?

@@AddyBeez I really enjoy watching your calathea videos and I learn a lot from you. I'm as excited as you everyone watching you unboxing a new calathea though I may already have some that you newly acquired. I couldn't really tell which one was my favorite because I very much love them all equally though there may be some calathea won't be my wish list. Collecting rare one is definitely something I would do! I came across a local nursery here selling Ecuadoriana but too bad the nursery no longer selling it.
The most troubling one to me is always the leaves becoming yellow and brown, pest infection? Environment cause? Or even fungus infection. Came to realize both pest and fungus infection couldn't be treated the same way and neem oil in fact couldn't eradicate pests like mites and thrips. I would really like to understand more what every calathea need to help them to thrive. White fusion is still the toughest among all for me yet the most beautiful. I really envy those who can have their white fusions thrive so well.

Calatheas probably just don't want to live outside of their native lands haha. I have the makoyanas, sanderiana, beauty star and medallion, and I find the makoyana to be the least finicky.

I don't blame them--the heat here is probably not fun for them. You know--I waited years to get a makoyana and then finally bought one at a big box store that wasn't in great shape. It was pretty healthy but the leaves were heavily stained from overhead watering. This spring, it shot out so much new growth that you can't see the old stained leaves and it is just gorgeous. I agree--as far as calatheas go, it is pretty resilient!

@@AddyBeez I'd love a makoyana video! (You haven't done one, have you?)
