    In my opinion, I feel it is the responsibility of the potential purchaser of a vehicle to buy a VIN report on a car they are interested in. The seller could be helpful in providing one, but I don't think it should be the sellers responsibility. When you go buy something, you do research on that before you pour money into it, don't you? Why should a $20k (or $2k, or even $500, price makes no difference) investment be any different? If you found a bad report, brush it off and consider it a bullet dodged. When I am shopping for a car, I buy 3 Carfax reports. Ran me $60 last time. My first car I ran was a Suburu Forrester at a local used car dealership. The car looked quite clean, but when I pulled the VIN, I found that not only had it been wrecked twice, but also was stolen at one point. I showed the manager at the dealer my findings, and he told me that under law, as long as it is roadworthy, it can be sold. Yeah. I didn't look any more at that dealership. So, my point being, a $60 investment saved me thousands.

    Just bought a classic mini in the UK. We have an annual car test here for vehicles over 3 and under 40 years old called the MOT. Fairly comprehensive test in specially licenced centers costing around £50. Here you can go on the Gov MOT site and from the registration number of the vehicle get all it's MOT history since the late 90's when they started doing it on computers. The thing is each MOT shows not just pass/fail but also lists items the vehicle failed on. It also has an 'adviseries' section of items not yet MOT faliours but on their way to being so like structual areas rust. It is an invaluable source of info when looking to buy a vehicle as you often quickly spot inconsistencies suggesting dodgy car history. Avoided a few problem vehicles with that! You can also go for a full vehicle check but better to check the MOT one for free first as they cost around £30 a pop. it is not the norm here to expect the seller to have a car report ready, in fact I've never noticed anyone selling offering one but there was talk of making it mandatory to do so a while ago, probably a EU type directive as they are big on regulations. Cars here over 40 can apply to be registered as 'historic vehicle' and no longer require taxation to use on the road or an annual MOT though many people still MOT them to check on their condition. I guess in places where there is no MOT equivillent then you really do need a vehicle report pretty much every time.

      I mean, I don't think what they made was that difficult, and the front-facing stuff looks like it's just a template, because they spammed it over and over again. But point taken, if you're going to make an email bot that hits public records about a VIN and spits out a PDF with that info slotted in, you might as well go legit and hook in to whatever serves up the accident reports and legit vehicle history. It's kind of amazing that they committed this much to the scam.

      @DanielLawrence23 Před 3 lety +5

      @@danieltaylor4185 Throwing up template sites isn't difficult but to purchase the domains, manage them, create scripts and have to keep swapping merchants and bank accounts for just small amounts of money must be frustrating and a lot effort. If they paid the DVLA, they would probably have API access to the database and would be able to build reviews and a brand on just one site. Don't forget the average person can barley use Wix haha

    I just went through this. I had several inquiries where the person started a normal conversation and then dropped in a request that I send them a vehicle report at the end of the conversation. I told the very first one that if the want to buy an owner's report, that was on them. They kept insisting, so I looked it up and found out it was a scam. Then they kept coming from other supposed buyers. It was crazy.

    I own a car dealership. They probably ran a NMVTIS (National Motor Vehicle Title Information System) for $1. I run NMVTIS, Carfax, Autocheck and recall check on EVERY vehicle. Im suprised how many times NMVTIS shows no accident, Carfax no accident but Autocheck shows accident. NMVTIS is bad and surprisingly Carfax is not as reliable as people think. So basically the scammer paid $1 and sold it to you for $25....
