As a Brit, I would say he learned his "American" accent from watching Dick Van Dyke trying (stunningly but hilariously unsuccessfully) to do a cockney accent in "Mary Poppins"!
I would have started busting out some Afrikaans the minute I heard him mumble in that horrible drawl.

I'm from Illinois and like many states, I love how the tourism images are like not representative of 99% of the state. Like here's Illinois: Chicago > suburbs > corn and soybean fields as far as the eye can see. Any tourism photos will be the magnificent mile in Chicago and like Galena.
