- Fishing for Yellowbelly is something that I simply do not do enough of these days. I use to do it all the time as a kid but these days I have to travel quite a fair way to find decent Yellowbelly fishing.
Today I took my youngest daughter Holly with me who was super excited to be coming along. I kid you not, she played with the worms in the container almost all of the way over which was almost an hour. She was fascinated by them.
Now, here in Victoria, NSW and Queensland we call these native perch Yellowbelly. They are given this nickname, simply because they do have a yellow belly. The real name for them is Golden Perch, because that yellow belly can turn bright golden in clear water. There scientific name is Macquaria ambigua. In South Australia, for some reason they call then callop. I have no idea why this is so. Whenever I think of callop, I get an image in my head of a horse running really fast.
Anyhow, in this video I am bait fishing for Yellowbelly using worms as bait. I was super excited to catch these couple of Yellowbelly. I was hoping to catch a carp or two with the knowledge in the back of my head that if we are really lucky we may just pick up a Yellowbelly. Instead we got no carp and 2 magnificent Yellowbelly or Golden Perch or callop or whatever the hell you want to call them!
My daughter loves fishing, how lucky am I. She called herself a fishing girl. She is cute, sweet, cheeky and beautiful all in one package and I love her and her elder sister to bits. - Jak na to + styl
Great fish there mate. Ya daughter won’t forget days like that. Top bloke mate. Keep it coming 👍
Thanks so much Ed. I am sure she won;'t, and neither will I. Such a precious moment.
Your a bloody legend mate !! I'm 13 by the way and when ever my mum checks on me at night I'm still awake and she is like what are you doing and I'm like watching Robbie catch some thumpers and her reply every time is not surprised. You are keeping me going through this hard time
Now there's a story to tell at your daughters 18th. " The Day Holly cut a hook out of my Arse". My wife, Youghest son and myself were in stitches listening to that bit.
Oh and the Yellow belly catches were great.
Hahahahaha thanks mate. It sure was a priceless moment. LOL
Mate, I'll admit I'm here because I'm going camping this weekend next to the river and apparently tthere are fish in it. I know bugger all about fishing nor have I ever really been interested but I borrowed a rod from a mate and I'm going to have a crack. The reason I write this though is to commend you on your general attitude and parental skills. It was great seeing how you relate to your daughter and teach her what you know. Your a bloody good bloke mate and if the world had more like you we wouldnt be in half the mess we are today. Keep fish'n and Cheers.
Wow nothing beats a day catching fish you went fishing for and getting a huge one and a eatable one is awesome great vid there cool fish I went to lakes entrance and I think they were like 20 25 cm yellowbelly but even if there not big we got like 15 so that was awesome there so cool then like 2 years later went to the same spot got no fish but we saw crabs and we try ing to bring them on land by picking them up with fishing rods lol what are plans for next vid

Hi Brad, thanks so much champ. I hope you can get onto a few over your way soon buddy.
Your Quincy lol very interesting stuff oh Holly is adorable ☺️
Haha thank you.
Awesome Robbie 👍 good to see you taking the kids 👌
Thanks mate. Holly is asking me more and more frequently as she gets older which is great. Taking them angling is fine but taking them wet wading up a tiny stream is a bit much for now. LOL
Going through all your stuff 😁 haha early footage of the BROs!! 🎉 Love it.
Haha thanks mate. This was a memorable day for sure.
Awesome video Robbie great to see some healthy fish going home for a feed
Thanks Blair. I just had a feed not half an hour ago. Magnificent!
A couple of cracking fish Robbie! Nothing better than getting the kids out fishing and playing with worms much better than playing with an xbox mate your a great dad mate.
Thanks mate. hahahaha I kid you not. she played with the worms all the way over. LOL
Great video Robbie! What a great day with your daughter!
Thanks heaps mate, it sure was a wonderful afternoon.
This is so much like my son and myself fishing. Great video Robbie.
Thanks mate. It's a bit like my dad and myself in 1982. LOL (Back when I was 9).

Great father and daughter vid. Keep telling everyone that big yellowbelly are poor eating mate. It’ll mean more for the rest of us 😉
my fishing started with my grandfather, when I was 7, have not put my rods down yet.....Pushing 70. Keeps me out of trouble. Nice vid.
Hello Robbie, thanks for sharing this great fishing video.
My pleasure mate. Thanks for watching it.
Hi Robbie and Holly! Great video! Nice yellas :)
Hi Dimitri, thank you so much mate.
A great day. A couple of nice yebblies to top off a day with your daughter is wonderful!
Thanks mate it was the bestest day EVER!
Would have been a great day without the fish. The fish made it the bestest day EVER!! Hope they are tasty mate, they were perfect keepers. When the 2nd was still in the water I though it might be a female in roe because it was so plump, lovely fish.
Love the enthusiasm with the young one mate! So great that you really get into it! Awesome work man! Look forward to seeing the next ones ^_^
Thanks so much mate. Holly LOVES fishing and being outdoors and I fully embrace that. Kids are the best!
Just had my first young one mate looking forward to the day I can do the same with him bud! Lovely yellow bellies by the way!

Mate, I loved this video. It's also good to see you're using stronger sticks as rod holders!!!! hahaha
Hahaha thanks so much mate. LOL The twig I was using last week just wasn't standing up to the task at hand. LOL
Robbie!! Im Andy from Thailand!
I lived in Oz since 1989.
But Im now back in Thailand. My girls are crazy about your videos! Very educational! Unfortunately they’re not there to experience it as I once had the privilege to.
Im ganna find a chance to bring them over and see you wonna these days ! Catching yabbies with a line and a net..?!? Wow.. such basic things non existing in a hustle bustle city we have.
Gimme some details to get in touch mate!!!!

Well deserved feed Robbie boy, loved it. Hooked himself in the arse, lol, your donut lol. Good stuff team. Cheers Moose.
Hahahahahaha Whoops! LOL Holly was impressed. SHE CUT THE BLOODY FISHING LINE!!!
They are some fat worms! I just spent 4 days fishing rock lands reservoir kayak based, only came up with a few carp and Redfin! I was after a nice bull trout but no luck at all :( awesome videos mate! Very quality entertainment!
Hello Robbie,it’s been a while since I’ve been able to watch your videos because I’ve moved houses and had no internet can’t wait to watch all you recent videos 😀
Hi Charlie, great to hear from you again. I hope you are well and I hope you enjoy my recent vids mate.
loved the video rob... congrats on the catch. Hopefully I be able to catch a few yellas this weekend, using shrimp ( if any are found in my trap I left overnight) and on spinnerbaits. I also think its wonderful that Holly shares your love for the outdoors ( and ain't scared of a fish autopsy...lol).
Thanks so much Ashley. Good luck mate.
Priceless fishing trip!
Thanks mate it sure was. Some things money just can not buy.
Great video Robbie
Thanks Fletcher.
great vid mate! nothing better than going fishing with your kids
Thanks mate. I agree. :)
Loved this video because it brought back great memories. I now live on the Sunshine Coast in Qld, but I was born and raised on a farm near Numurkah and was lucky enough to be able to fish the irrigation channels on the farm and near home, but also the Boosey and Broken Creeks near Katamatite. In those days mostly we caught reddies and an occasional cod or yellowbelly. Carp were becoming prevalent in those waterways when I left, about 50 years ago. Furthermore, I noticed the rodholder that you were using (not the one that Holly was using). I had some of those (purchased from Elio Jaquinta's shop in Shepparton in the late 80's) , which sadly I've lost in the multitude of moves I've made. Do you know if they're still available down your way, because I reckon they're good. Love your videos. Keep up the good work.
Looks like you had a great day both of you.
Thanks Ritchard it sure was amazing!
I remember my dad and me out camping for yellas about 30 years ago. I actually rate them as good as Barramundy to eat. Right size and they are a superbly beautiful feed cooked direct over the open fire coals as the fat dissolves and seems to permeate a wonderful flavor. Absolutely nothing wrong with keeping a feed. Just my opinion, but then again I love larger bream to eat too.
That's fantastic, 2 brilliant fish
Thanks heaps David.
That’s wholesome man. What a life
You're a legend!
Wowzer Robbie! Couple of great Callop😉 There to cunning for me, I'll stick to the Mud Marlins!
hahaha thanks mate! Theyre all fun to catch.
Ripper catch Robbie! Two beautiful fish. Big fan of your channel mate.
I got myself a 45cm yellow at Eildon last year (maybe a month later I was looking up videos on how to catch trout when I found your channel and I am glad I did). That yellow my first fresh water fish and I also put it on the plate, I couldn’t resist. Absolutely delicious! Keep it up mate.
Hi Corey thanks so much for your super kind words and well done on your first Yellowbelly. That is the perfect size. Whatever you do, don't even attempt to eat a big one. LOL I ate (or tried to eat) a 7.5lb Yellowbelly from Lake Mulwala years ago and it was truly horrible. LOL I wish I had of released it. 35-45cm perfect. (Up to 50cm in rivers) anything over and they get vert fatty very quickly.
robbiefishing no worries thanks mate! Well I’m glad you told me otherwise I would have had to learn the hard way lol I’ll keep that in mind.
Sounds like I caught a winner. 🎣👍🏼
Great fish Robbie. I am in a fishing club and we head up to Kyalite NSW in the Wakool River and catch Yellow Belly from 2-4kg. Biggest one I've caught was 3.3kg. You should head up there after all this Coronavirus nonsense
Another great video Robbie. Your daughter is cute.
Thanks Phillip. She sure is, she is a real livewire! LOL I am the luckiest man alive with my two beautiful healthy daughters.
Yellowbelly should be biting around here too. Am going out soon. Fishfinder works a treat. Got a few fish popping up already. Noted where they were and that is where we will be fishing.
Great vid Robbie!
Thanks buddy.
great video robbie and holly
Thanks Michale.
Omg she gets her good looks from her dad!!
Hey Robbie great video. The other day one of my mates and I cought a yellow belly that weighed ten and a half pounds and was sixty centre metres long . Keep up the great work Robbie 👍
Hi Kade WOW that is awesome. I bet it fought hard. Well done mate.
Gold Robbie great Father daughter moments
Thanks mate, it sure was an awesome afternoon with my beautiful little cherub.
Amazing!
Well done, teaching the kids, don't forget the combo shrimp and worm.
Some good rivers for you to try workool Neima and Edwards, keep up the good work.
Hi Gary, thanks so much mate. I am really hoping to get down that way this spring time.
Hahahahaha the antihistamines with the conola flowers 😂😂😂😂
Its bloody hayfever central over there mate!
Bit of hayfever banter haha, unreal yellows mate
Hahaha thanks heaps mate. Bloody hayfever has been crippling me recently.
Where is the cooking segment chef Robbie?
Big little bait sesh, be keen to chuck a couple of lures in there and see what eventuates.
Good stuff 👍🏼👍🏼
Haha thanks mate. LOL I only cook carp on my channel. 😂😂 I'm hoping to flick a few lures around there when I get the chance.
well done holly
Great stuff mate. 2 beauties of yellabellies and a caught and released whopper of a drongobum. Good thing you released that, they are worse eating than a carp. That's what I hear anyway. cheers mate.
They taste like shit mate. Hahahahahahahaha Thanks heaps mate.
Great one 👍.
Thanks heaps Cam.
awesome video. i think this is the first video ive seen u catching the golden perch. really stunning looking fish. had a fish today this morning and omg it was the hardest day's fishing XD lost a few softbaits n had trout follow my lure but weren't so committed. but definitely gonna have another swing lol
Hey mate, the trout fishing has been tough so far this season. This may be my first ever Yellowbelly video but I am not sure. I don't catch a whole lot of them.
Great vid mate, got some good fish too.
Thanks mate.
I’ve never caught a yellow belly I need to one day 😀
Don't feel to down mate,
I'm a qualified fish farmer (trout)
Still can't hook a yellow
Awesome fish
Thanks buddy.
you are so good mate
Thank you so much mate.
well done, love the vid
Thanks heaps mate.
Fantastic 👍
Thanks David.
Awesome video! Gonna be doing lots of fishing this summer. Would love to fish with you sometime
Thanks heaps champ.
Great vid robbie 👍🤖
Thanks Jhet.
Legendary Yellas caught mate. Funny part for me was watching and hearing the debate of whether it was cutting the hook from your bum or in fact the line. Even more funnier that you sat back down again to realise it was the line cut. Rest assured and verdict is out...………...you did originally say hook.
Hahahahaha OMG such a funny kid. LOL Thanks so much for your kind words mate.
Good video Robbie
Thanks heaps Jaycod.
Hey you. Nice yellas
Thanks mate.
Watching you while I prepare my chainsaw as I have a heap of wood 🪵 to cut. Always learn something that I missed the last time like removing the gills thank you 😊
Thanks so much Sharon. I use to cut a lot of firewood with my dad in my teenage years. These days my back is too stuffed from factory work to even consider it.
Caught 2 nice goldies their Robbie 😎...
Nice video have you done much fishing in howlong ? Been some good cod being caught here
Kids....patience....... Fishing !!!!good job!! Next generation coming!!!
Thanks so much Tommy.
cheers mate
Nice yellas and video
You should go back to that spot and flick a few lure👍
Thanks Nick. It is on the cards mate! My annual leave is over and I am back at work now so it will be harder to find time but I am planning on doing that.
robbiefishing can't wait to see it
Can you do a segment of how to get a compo payout as chopper reed!
Noice vid Robbie!!!
Thanks captain.
You didn’t tell us a joke today Robbie
Big thumbs up to Holly.........
Still waiting to hook a yellow Robbie. Your video might help me hook one before the season is over. When do you think that might be?
Regards Andrew
How do you cook your yellow
I must apologize to you Robbie for laughing about you sitting on a hook, but it was funny. (not my arse!) Lovely Yella's too. I'll be up your way in a couple of weeks and think I'll check out Boozey Creek. Great vid mate.
Hahaha Thanks so much Bryce. Its a beautiful spot mate. Mostly carp with the possibility of a yella.
PS.... It only has water in it from Katamatite downstream. Bone dry upstream.
I was fishing the boosey in a little hole I found and caught about 80 carp on corn. sick vid by the way
Thanks mate. WOW thats nuts. How long ago was that?
@@robbiefishing it was last year in january the hole is still there but after the flood all the big ones washed down and now there is only tiddlers
Finally get to see a video aha yayyy
G'day Jedi that is awesome! Do you have internet back up and running?
@@robbiefishing nah, using some of dad's data aha was having to much of robbie fishing withdrawals LOL
Robbie at the start of the vid holly said boosey creek but at the end you Broken so which one did you actually go fishing in. Great vid by the way
Hi Charley thanks mate. We were in Boosey just upstream its junction with Broken. I think I prefer to say Broken as it is much longer and more people will know what I'm talking about. It's pretty much the same creek as the Broken creek contributes very little water into Boosey where it becomes the Broken if that all makes sense?
Yeah Robbie// it’s Connor Emerson from face book
G'day Connor, great to hear from you.
Nice robbie
Thanks mate.
You got some nice yellas I might have to give that spot a go when I'm up trout fishing
Absolute ripper robbie, ive never caught one but never tried to either. How did they taste?
Thanks James, they are an amazing species of fish.
We call em Callop over here because we're special ahahah
hahahaha Every time I hear the word Callop, I get a picture in my head of a horse running really quickly. LOL
Ahahahaha, too true!
Do u catch any catfish and any videos about it pls
Hi Robbie, how long does it take to drive from Wang to Boosey Creek?
Gday Jack, about an hour or so buddy. Its a fair hike!
G’day Robbie can you do a blackfish video in the summer
Hi Gary, thanks for the tip. I done one a few years back but I think it might be time for a fresh vid. Thanks heaps for the tip mate.
May I ask wgat rig set up your using mate ? Cheers
Hi mate, I am using a paternoster rig.
