Bait fishing for yellowbelly

- čas přidán 11. 03. 2020
- Well I caught more yellowbelly on this fishing trip than I thought I was going to.
In my area, people call them yellowbelly. In South Australia people call them callop. Their real name is Golden Perch and they are an Australian native fish.
I love bait fishing for yellowbelly. In fact, I just love fishing for yellowbelly full stop. I have had some amazing session when fishing for yellowbelly. Back in the old Lake Mokoan days, the yellowbelly fishing would be red hot whenever the lake was filling. For the rest of summer it would tick over steadily. It was an amazing fishing lake.
I caught quite a few fish in this session, 4 of which came in a really short bite window. Had any of them been big enough to keep, rest assured... I would have kept a few.
This video was filmed at Lake Nillahcootie in Victoria.

Robbie, I saw your vid earlier today, thought, I wonder if I've been fishing wrong (not catching many GP here at home) tried this, got 9 fish in two hours, 4 bass, 3 silvers and 2 yellas!!! Thanks a bunch mate, you bloody legend.
Great countryside!
Beautiful up there mate.
@@robbiefishing Sure is!
You get wet last week?
Your videos are funny keep it up
Good job
Thanks Henry.
Apparently according to some studies done on it, the fish hook gets caught in the stomach, so it doesn't pass through into the intestines possibly because of it's size, and also it usually will lodge into the wall a bit in the stomach. The study then says that the stomach acid of the fish will result in the hook being eaten away in the stomach, at which point sections of corroded away hook may then pass through the fish.
So it seems essentially it usually survives. This also shouldn't be a massive shock, since the spines on a lot of fish are very sharp themselves, and these get devoured along with the entire small fish by the larger fish. So the fish stomach is evolved to be tough against stuff like pointy things.
Great video keep up the good work
Thanks heaps mate.
Good video Robbie
🤔I guess the reason those fish were returning to you, is maybe you’re now AFISHALLY a SUPERSTAR!!! 🤩
hahahahaha That's funny.
LOL that shrimp punishment 😂
haha Poor shrimp. LOL
Nice watch Robbie !
Thanks heaps mate.
didn't know this fish , thanks,mate 👍😇
Hi mate, thanks for watching. Yellowbelly, or Golden Perch are an Australian native fish and the second biggest freshwater fish in Australia temperate zones.
@@robbiefishing thanks for the information 🙏😇
Great video Robbie
Thanks heaps James.
Hey Robbie, great video.
I've had SP at home who have swallowed the hook and a while later I must've caught them again and noticed line coming out their butt, only to find it was the hook working its way out 👍
Thanks mate. That's awesome. Nature is amazing isn't it.
@@robbiefishing tbh, I was stunned, couldn't believe it. I try to only use circle hooks here at home. Don't have much luck with yellows though, SP and AB go alright, but not so much yellas...
Nothing beats drowning some worms when the sun is shining and the yebblies are on.
You're not wrong Andrew. Very relaxing amd enjoyable, even with 3/4 of Victoria fishing with you. LOL
@@robbiefishing Mate, for a haul of yebblies, half the world could be fishing with me for all I care. Just so long as they don't try and cast in my honey hole!
The legal size for yellow belly is 30 but I only keep over 35 and your right a About the eating quality’s too!
Hi Vinnie, thanks so much for clearing that up. 30cm is not a very big yellowbelly is it.
G'day Robbie boy. Sorry I missed your call mate. Been off comms for a while, trying to fix this back so trips down to St Vinnies on and on. I hit the all bell so ill get the vids on my phone at least. Have a good one mucker.
Hey Moose, all good brother. I called because I was a bit worried about you as I haven't seen you for a while. I am happy to know you are OK... well, kind of OK. Take care buddy, we will chat soon.
LOVE the yellowbelly videos Robbie! Please try to do more of them. Keep up the great work!👍
Thank you so much mate.
Hey Robbie! Great video. Looking to head to nillahcootie next week to target yellow belly. Do you know how it’s been fishing recently.
love your videos mate thank you
do you ever use lures to catch yellowbelly or is bait more productive way
Hey Robbie, I love your videos keep it up. Your an amazing person in general and you really inspire me keep it up👍
Hi Ted thanks so much for your kind words mate.
Not to seem a smart arse mate, but the spine on the yebbly is on the gill plate, or operculum, not the rakers, which are an internal part of the gills, mostly of molluscs and certain fish that filter feed. The rakers catch the food organisms inside the gill structure before the water is expelled. Certain fish have developed these rakers into a useful secondary teeth structure, such as the cichlid family and certain members of the damsel fish family in the ocean. This enables them to grip their prey with their mouth and strip meat from their prey without danger of accidental release. If you watch an oscar eat a goldfish, a cloud of scales often flies out of the gill plates. This is the gill rakers at work.
The spine on the yebbly's operculum is a defense mechanism that is fairly common in fish. This is why most fish swallow other fish head first, because flared gills and spiny fins go down easily one way, not the other. Swallowing a fish tail first can actually become a death sentence if it lodges in the wrong place. When fishing live baits pinned in the head, this is often the reason a take is not secure until the fish stops, turns the bait head first and then swallows
It is also used offensively to bash at prey to stun it and I have seen schools of yebbly smash through schools of shrimp and bait fish, especially small redfin in spring, just shaking their heads with gills flared before turning and going back to collect the corpses they leave in their wake. This is why many yebbly are caught in the face when fishing lures, they are trying to stun the lure and turn it to take it head first.
They also smash each other up pretty well with the spines in spawn. Love is brutal as a fish.
Hey Andrew, I would never ever take offense or consider your comments to come from a smart arse perspective. I fully value your educated opinion. I can learn a lot from you,. and just did. Thanks so much for the great explanation mate.
Callop were going off this weekend off the sand bar past at lock 5. 40-50cm range all of them
That is so awesome Wayne. I would love to go down there one day.
robbiefishing would love the see a video of you trying to fend off the pelicans at the same time you're trying to land your fish before they snatch it. I prefer to arm my wife with a Diawa Sensor Surf 12
Cracking video mate
Thanks so much Brad.
You've probably looked it up since that day but the minimum is 30cm for Yellowbelly, but I generally keep them in the same range as you, from 40-45cm. You hit the Yellowbelly jackpot Robbie that was unreal hahaha
Thanks so much mate. I actually hadn't looked it up so thanks you. A 30cm yella is not a big fish, I reckon the biggest one in this video would have been close.
Where goin to bonnydoon 🤣🤣🤣👍👍👍🍻🍻🍻
hahahahaha in search of serenity., LOL
I came friends see you fishing .... amazing place ...
Thank you.
Mantap pak.👍👍
Hey Robbie you should try fishing at lake Fyans great Redfin and some trout down the road great trout fishing at lake bell field
Thanks mate. I would love to fish there some time.
awesome I love going down after school catching a few reddies
That was an awesome 15mins of fishing 😊
Thanks so much Ty, sure was a lot of fun mate.
Great work Robbie! Awesome fish there mate! They all seem to come back to you 😂
Thanks mate. hahaha They all done it bar 1 I think. Homesick yellowbelly. LOL
What a beautiful looking place. I was waiting for you to go in for a swim LOL.
Thanks Vincent. Haha Swim would have been nice.
Not as great as the Farkens, but still a great vid. Thanks!
hahaha Thanks so much Jim.
30 is the limit
Thanks champ.
Nice to see you get into the yellows Robbie. Were you trying to say earlier that you catch more fish at the wall?
Thanks Phil. I do seem to catch a lot down in that area, but the larger ones seem to be in the top end of the lake, where there is plenty of structure.
Love your videos robbie keep up the great work
Thanks so much mate.
Great video Robbie, very informative, thank you. I am actually staying down at Burrinjuck dam (near Yass, NSW) for a couple of days next week, so hoping to catch my very first Yellowbelly.
Thanks Peter. Good luck up there mate, I hope you can catch a few.
Great looking spot mate well done
Thanks Jaron, it sure is a great place to fish. I really enjoy fishing at Nillahcootie apart from the fact that it always seems to be windy.
Was waiting for this Beauty
Thanks mate I hope you enjoy it.
robbiefishing sure did love these videos
Awesome trip mate looked real fun keep them coming 👍👍👍👍
Thanks heaps Cam. I am having a good run at the moment. I had a great day today chasing trout. 2 weeks ago I said that I was going to slow down my uploads, and instead I have gone mad! LOL
robbiefishing looking forward to it mate 👍👍👍👍
30 Robbie
Thanks Patrick. 30cm isn't a very big yellowbelly is it! Than again... they taste soooo damn good. LOL
Good stuff man! Those fins definitely look nice and sharp.
Thanks heaps mate.
Awsome video mate. Couldn help notice the esky. Their an awsome size for fishing 👍 from bcf yeah ??
Hey buddy it is an absolute ripper. I got mine from Adventure Camping and Fishing.
Mate good effort even though small still nice to get onto them I've been hooking onto some rippers in the river here and to solve the swallowing problem I started using circle hooks and lip catching ever since best move ever. But great to see young fish as well as the bigger good signs
Thanks heaps Tony, a couple of people have suggested circle hooks. I must give them a go.
Do you find the patinosta set up less snag prone to a running sinker set up interested in your thoughts great videos cheers
Hi Leigh, yo be honest I am not sure. I like it because it keeps my bait suspended off the bottom. I only use the running sinker for trout in lakes so really have no comparison sorry mate.
When I went fishing at a jetty on our holiday this guy gave us some bream that he caught and when we gutted it there was 2 bream that had hooks in there stomach
WOW Well there you go, and they were comfortable enough to still be feeding.
Good day mate! I often wonder how small circle hooks would go in fresh water. They use them in salt water and apparently catch the fish in the corner of the mouth everytime. I must try them on the reddies in my dam and see.
Thanks mate. Sounds good, let me know how they go. I have a feeling that I used them once before.
Whot size hook do you use
haven't caught a yella for ages wat to get one on the line again and AWESOME VIDEO
Thanks so much Harrison.
The two patches on my inflatable are from yellow belly, sharp and feisty... Ps Promised myself a few years ago never to go fishing on a public holiday.... Ever!
Hahahaha they sure are sharp mate. I wouldnt have gone had i remembered it was a public holiday. LOL
I generally end up with at least two leaks in my hands when yebbly fishing. It has just become something I am resigned to. Like flathead, you can avoid the spines, or you can avoid the gills, but try avoiding both...
Ayyyyy that was a Castle reference. That’s my favourite movie
hahaha sure is, classic line from a classic movie.
robbiefishing me and my mates are gonna be singing the bonnie doon song all the way down from Gold Coast to Bonnie doon. Ever fished there rob?
@@robbiefishing "So much serenity..."
@@jennifertheyowiehunter8753 🤣I was amazed years ago when I learned that Bonnie Doon actually existed. I almost swerved off the road when I saw the sign lol!
My parents as young days in mid 1950s they always use Shrimp as bait for Callop and Bream now named as Silver Perch and interested never caught a Carp ever in 50s
Thanks mate. Yep, shrimp is an awesome bait that is for sure.
45 mins and no bites.......Glad you see that you're putting that new watch to good use!🤣🤣🤣
hahahahaha Yep, absolutely. LOL
Nillahcootie was the best thing about living in Benalla.
Sure is a fantastic place to fish mate.
great video as always robbie and i think redfin are the only good eating fresh water fish because they taste like salt water fish
Thanks mate. They definitely are a lovely eating fish. I prefer to eat yellowbelly, but redfin are a very close second.
The old Nilla' is a bit low mate! Nice yellas you got!
Thanks mate. Sure is bloody low. I really gooe we get some decent rain this winter if not the Broken River catchment will be in trouble.
@@robbiefishing Didn't you COP a good drenching last week in that tropical storm?
@@Urbanfisho Sure did mate. Lake Buffalo has risen almost 40% and Lake William Hovell about 15, but Nillahcootie didn't even rise 1%
@@robbiefishing Oh ok then! I thought the whole area would have copped a good drenching!
Do you do any catch and cooks, I’d love to know how some of those freshwater fish taste
Hi mate, ive done a few but not very often.
A lot of people like redfin, yellowbelly and cod, not so much carp. And of course, trout are popular smoke or however else they are prepared.
I bet that was a kamikaze shrimp
haha I think so mate.
Love it live yellowbelly fishing with bait also you should try catch yellas at Nillahcootie on soft plastics
Thanks mate. I will hopefully be trying that very soon.
Where were ya fishing?
Hi Matt, I was at Lake Nillahcootie mate.
Hi Robbie my pop Laurie knows you and my brother and I found some yabbie nets so we are trying to catch some yabbies like you and you know my dad Rhys👍
Hi Lily, thanks for watching. Yep, I know your dad, your uncle and your pop very well mate. Good luck catching some yabbies. Are you and your brother twins?
Yes we are twins👍
Hey Robbie Harvey and I caught two yabbies yesterday at mums friends parent house they have a big creek👍 the yabbies are really big
@@lilyshappyxo9019 Hi Lily, WOW thats really awesome. Well done.
Thank
you
is this before "hey you, you're watching robbiefishing"?
Hi mate, I can't actually remember when I launched that intro, but I do still use some of my old intros occasionally.
Nlc😂
Thanks Robbie I caught a 40cm Murray Cod 3 times over a period of three years at the same spot in the Murray river - how do I know ? The hook had started to work its way out it back side and every time I caught it the hook had worked it way out further each time I hooked it. The last time I hooked it this fish measured 46cm
awesome video
Thanks Peter, WOW That's incredible. Have you given him a name yet? Captain hook??
Yeah should have but I think it was a stainless steel hook so the acids of the fish would have not been able to destroy the hook I have gutted yellow belly and found the partial remains of the eye of a hook --- keep up the good work
Amazing I need merch
Thanks mate. Here is my merch: teespring.com/stores/robbiefishing
Callop.... do you fish in sa?
No mate, I fish in Victoria where we call them yellowbelly.
Was out there Monday morning just looking not fishing, where should I take kyack for a swim this weekend in your opinion
Hey Patrick, I am not sure. I would say William Hovell but it has risen 15% this week and I am unsure whether the fresh water fish shut the fish down or switch them on. If it's not too windy, I would try Nillahcootie.
Hay Robie what is your biggest yellow belly
Hi Bryan, it is 62cm mate.
VERY NICE CATCH BROO

RIYAZ FISHER
Do you ever use berley or a berley cage ?
Hi Mohammed, no mate, never really. I am not sure of many people do in fresh water. I have no doubt that it would work though.
@@robbiefishing I suppose it only applies really to a lake.
Maybe one day I go fishing somewhere , when I get on old age pension.
If the world still exists by then.
Why not usecircle hooks kind too fish
Personal choice. I prefer normal J hooks.
You can never find a farken forked stick when you want one ...... oh, sorry, wrong video. I see those tiny yellowbelly swallowed the hook again, happens a lot. Oh, and yeah, I got bigger and started getting fatty too lol. You should submit a record claim for shrimp, you are getting good at hooking them.
hahaha 10gm shrimp on 4lb line. LOL Yellas sure are shockers for swallowing the hook.
why was jinda tackles comment 17 hours long when the vid was out for 2 minutes?
Because he supports me on Patreon so gets to see my videos early.
Great video again Robbie. Nice yellas you were catching. I love yellas. Great to catch, on bait and lures, and great on the plate. Up here in CQ, most of our yellas are green, with gold belly and red anal and ventral fins. With the larger fish, I find the fat can be rolled away from the fillet. The flesh tastes pretty good then. I never use stainless steel nor bronze hooks. I like ordinary steel, because the gastric juices have a better chance of dissolving the hook, or the steel can rust away if a lipped fish escapes. Love ya work Robbie.
G'day mate, that is a fantastic idea, ordinary and not stainless. Thanks so much for the great tip.
Here i am thinking "Who's the a-hole blaring his radio?" And it turn out to be your phone. 🤦🏻♂️🤣
