Best Yellowbelly or Golden Perch fishing rig

  • This Yellowbelly, or Golden Perch rig is my all time favourite. Back in the days of Lake Mokoan we use to catch Yellowbelly one after the other using this very technique. It was dynamite!
    I realise that in this modern era of lure fishing, sponsorship, bling, top end fishing tackle etc... a lot of people are shying away from the basic forms of fishing such as this, and most other forms of bait fishing but I cant. I simply can not turn my back on the basic fundamentals of fishing.
    Bibbibg a yabby makes it look like it is alive, and in murky water the movement sends out vibrations which attract yellowbelly.
    Like all fish species, Golden Perch have a lateral line along the side of their body which helps them sence vibrations, or movement in the water which is why bobbing the yabby is a much more effective technique than having the yabby just sitting there still.
    When bobbing yabbies for yellowbelly, it is not uncommon to also pick up a few redfin. Both redfin and yellowbelly are perch, and are very similar species of perch at that with yellowbelly being much bigger, so they have very similar behaviors and feeding patterns.
    Anyhow, next time you're out yellowbelly fishing why not give this yabby bobbing technique a try, and if you do not have any yabbies try it with a soft plastic.

      Adam Farrell Hi Adam thanks so much for your kind words mate. It's comments like these that inspire me to make more videos. Thankyou.

    They do indeed love this method. I remember when I was a kid, I was fishing for yellow belly and would get bored after a few hours, so I just messed around with the yabby bobbing it up and down on the very edge of the water and ended up catching a massive yellow belly, one of my favourite fishing memories!

      G'day Jeremy, thanks for your message. Personally, I think it is hard to go past the old faithful number one stumpjumper. There are so many different brands on the market these days, and without knowing where you live the best recommendation I can make is the number 1 stumpjumper. Don't hesitate to cast a big lures. Good luck mate.

    Robbie what are your thoughts on the decommissioned Lake Mokoan ?

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing  Před 6 lety +1

      Hi mate, great question. I LOVED Lake Mokoan and spent a lot of time there. At first I was upset with the decommissioning and ranted and raved like a lot of other people. Over time I have taken the time to learn exactly why it was decommissioned and now have huge amounts of respect for the Winton Wetlands. I loved it as Mokoan and love it as the wetlands! A lot of people complain that we lost a fishery, but do not take the time to learn the positive benefits. For example, I have caught bass in the Snowy River. This is largely due to the increased water flow which as come since Mokoan was decommissioned. The calculated evaporation now flows down the Broken River, which means it can be held back in Lake Hume which means it can be held back in the snowy mountains system, which means it can instead flow down the Snowy River and provide great Australian Bass habitat. On top of that,m water that use to flow down the Lake Mokoan channel now flows down the Broken River providing better spawning conditions for Murray cod in spring. BUT....First Lake Nillahcootie has to be full before either the Broken or Mokoan get can water, and even this year Lake Nilahcootie has not filled.
      In a nutshell.....we lost an amazing fishery, and gained an amazing wetlands full of natural wildlife to take the kids. I was over there today and it a packed with people. I photographed a whole family of Tawny Frogmouths.

      Thanks for reply Robbie, i'm with you on the Lake Mokoan saga its the best decision for future generations. In saying that while driving up the hume freeway to Rutherglen its a sad site seen what was Lake Mokoan now its a giant paddock with dead trees.. Gota come up one of these days to your neck of the woods and do a bit of fishing.. Cheers mate

    So you only hook the yabbie through the last few tail segments then? Will try bobbing with soft plastic yabbies here in the Murray. Heard a few negatives about soft plastics here though. They say the soft plastics don't work as well in murky water?

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing  Před 6 lety +1

      Hey Phillip, I think it depends just how murky. I used this technique in Lake Mokoan which had water clarity of around 1 inch. That was with real yabbies! I can't see how a soft plastic with a bit of lure scent to help wouldn't work. Definitely worth a try mate!

    Good video, but what hook size were you using?

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing  Před 6 lety

      Thanks mate. Its a small to medium sized hook as seen in the video. I do not care much for hook sizes, I just buy a packet of hooks on the size they look. The size does not have to be exact, just a small to medium sized hook with a bait keeper barb or two on the back is perfect.

  • @marcusgiannone5439
    @marcusgiannone5439 Před 6 lety

    What hook were you using Robbie??

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing  Před 6 lety +1

      Hi mate, I just grabbed it out of my tackle box for this video. I usually just use any hook about the same small to medium size as this one. If I am using a small yabby I will use a smaller hook. I think the one in this video may have been a mustard.

    Whats the best time of day to fish for yellas?

    • @samhaveaguess4284
      @samhaveaguess4284 Před 5 lety +1

      Almost all freshwater fishing is best morning and knight !! But is good threw the day as well in the right spots ! Think like a fish !! If it hot and sunny you wouldn't want to be out in that !! So the fish go deeper into there structure at those times ! So fish real hard up against structure and deep drop offs and over hanging banks ! When its cool and overcast they will venture out a bit more as with mornings and nights !! That is my years of experience of growing up right on the Murray river anyhow !! Hope it helps !!!

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing  Před 6 lety

      Da_Fisherman Hey mate you don't need to, but it helps a lot to attract fish. With that rig, if the yabbie is alive it can easily tunnel into mud and hide if you don't bob it.

    "40 or 50 a day"
    Why is there none left?

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing  Před 28 dny

      I never said we kept 40 or 50 a day and the reason there is none left is because the government decommissioned the lake and most of them died when it dried up. Some were relocated. Maybe we should have kept 40 or 50 a day as you assumed we did, at least they would have gotten used and not died and turned into bird food.
