a HUGE school of Silver Perch!

  • This was probably the largest and most aggressive school of silver perch I've ever encountered. I originally intended to replicate my carp fishing success at this spot from a year ago, but my baits were intercepted by a massive pack of ferocious little bait stealing silvers.
    I caught 7 or 8, and had no chance of keeping track of how many fish I lost. Most of the day consisted of my bait being stolen within 20 seconds of hitting the water. Most of the session consisted of a few different float fishing rigs, but I also fished the bottom towards the end to hook a couple of the more tricky fish.
    Despite costing me a ton of worms, this was one of the most fun fishing trips I've had in quite a while.

    Those silver perch look very similar to our white perch here. They're good catfish bait. The white perch here don't bow their bodies like those silvers do, but they do poke their gills out and them things are sharp and will slice you up if you aren't careful. That's a lot of fun when you find an actively feeding school of fish like that. :)

      Ah yes the silver perch along with our other native species have plenty of sharp and spiky bits as well haha. It makes handling them so tricky when they are flopping around LOL. I definitely had a lot of fun with this school of fish haha

      @RKJFishing  Před 3 lety

      Hi Brian! The murray cod and yellowbelly are definitely in the same family, the Percichthyidae, but silver perch are different, they are a Terapontidae - they are actually a grunter rather than a perch. In other areas of Australia we have many other types of native fish from different families as well, but where I live there's only a few native options. I've been told that the silver perch look like your white perch and bass before actually, and I tend to agree! Thanks for watching mate.

    LOL! those little buggerss are like the reddies. Take your worm and don't hang around to say thanks.
    The reason they bow their bodies like that is to make them harder to swallow. Same reason as why yebblies and Reddies flare their gills and put their dorsal fins up. It is hard to swallow something when you have a dorsal spine stuck in your gullet. The plan is to get coughed up to hopefully swim away and live to be swallowed another day.

      I knew about the gills and dorsal fins but I didn't realize that's why they bowed their bodies. It makes sense but they tend to do it a lot more than other fish for some reason.

    Beautifully done mate! Silvers are really starting to dominate a few spots now! It does get a bit monotonous after a while feeding them! Fun fact they are not a perch but a grunter; they grunt sometimes when they are out of the water, the bigger ones do.

      @RKJFishing  Před 3 lety

      Thanks heaps Les! Haha yeah if it wasn't so much fun it would have been frustrating lol. I've certainly heard the larger ones grunt at me while fiddling around trying to get the hook out haha

      I used to fish for the silvers in the Murray when I was a young fella. They love that faster shallow water. Small hook and just enough worm to cover the hook of the go. No worm hanging off, that's why you couldn't hook them, that had hold of the worm not the hook.
      You should try fishing for cod in that spot, they love eating silver perch so could be hanging around the school.
      Good vid👍

      @RKJFishing  Před 3 lety +1

      G'day John! I've heard people talk about those before actually. These ones do secrete some yellow stuff when putting them on the hook, and not always from where the hook goes in haha. I'll have to test out if it glows in the dark!
