ha, i have been doing the same. I did test mine without the insulation (clever how you hid it in the walls, that is ideal). Hot enough on the bottom, but the heat loss is huge.
The element that came with mine was 1200 watts & the controller not designed to crank above 220'. ordered a replacement from amazon and used the wood chip port to mount it.
I also like how you welded shut the openings. I had not thought of that

The insulation I think makes a huge difference....I thing the heat loss without it would make it impossible to get the oven hot enough. Thanks for watching!

I ended up buying the same smoker you used at an auction for $28. Maybe used once, so no cleaning issues! DId you mount your controller box to the cabinet?
Not yet, but I need to. I'll probably mount it to the bottom near the casters so there are no heat issues@@WheresWilson58

Since you can buy part. Add a 2nd heating element. Great job. I'll have to keep my eye out for one.
I've thought about a 2nd heating element, but I'm not sure if my controller could handle 2. I may try moving the one I have to the back wall, but we'll see
The temperature gradient from top to bottom is probably a function of radiant heat from the element as a function of distance. Perhaps adding a cheap ceramic plate a few inches above the element will help with that. A trimmed pizza stone would do it if you have one, but cheap red quarry tile would do the same thing. Also, it will act as a heat sink and help in temperature recovery time.
I'll have to try that. I plan on having the thermocouple up at the top to have it as far away from the heating element as possible, too.
@@MoonBuiltGarage add a oven broiler pan above the heat element it will help distribute the heat more even
Not to sell you short, I think you did a great job on both the oven and the video, both of which I give you a thumbs up on. That said however, I fail to see why anyone would spend $130 and a WHOLE lot of time and energy converting a smoker into a less efficient powder coating oven than a $50 scrap kitchen oven with approximately the same volume and much better heat distribution.
The time and effort wasn't that big a deal....as for why not go with a scrap kitchen oven, there are a number of reasons:
1. Space...I don't have the room for a full-sized appliance in my garage
2. Power...The only 220 I have in my garage is used by my compressor and/or plasma cutter, and the plug is not in a place where I could easily put a full sized appliance like an oven. Plus, not everyone has 220 available
3. Availability...some areas have more/different availability of choices
So, just because you fail to see why I anyone would choose a smoker over an actual oven doesn't mean one choice is better than the other. It all depends on a number of reasons....but thanks for watching!
@@MoonBuiltGaragealso, it’s way cooler, and more fun. We learn when we experiment. Great job on the oven! Maybe a small interior fan would help with the temperature gradient.
Maybe try adding a convection oven type fan to better circulate air inside. Just remember you don't want it blowing directly at the parts.
I think it might be a little on the small size for a fan...

What gauge wire did you use to wire everything in the box?
16gauge for anything that is actually carrying power, and 18gauge for the interconnect/signal wires

You didn't search too hard...there was a video less than a month later ( Beginner BUDGET Home DIY Powder Coating
czcams.com/video/m9tzIrHR5hs/video.html), I also used it for my nut and bolt gauge, and on other things that never made it into a video.
electric oven would work better all you wouldve needed to do was add a 120v heating element and modify the oven case to accomodate the element!
I don't have the room for an electric oven...smoker is more compact and gets me started

You've never used a smoker? WTF, DUDE??!!?? Damn, you are missing out ... BBQ is as much fun as cars, i'd expect you to BBQ. Although, I don't always agree with you, gotta give you SOME props on this one. I'd spend a little more and go with a refurbed house oven, if i were you, less work, more even and higher heats. Use the smoker to smoke meat for BBQ. I have an old house oven, but i also have an menonite guy down the street that does it for dirt cheap, i mean, dirt cheap. $10 for a little bracket and tons of colors to choose from. Powder coated a 48" John Deere mower deck for $100, prep and all ... i've more or less abandoned my home powder coating endeavors in favor of a guy that does it cheap. Less time, less labor, less investment on my part. Have you seen the prices Eastwood wants for this sh*t? Could've gotten a refurbed house oven for $150 and not had the issues you have now. Its what most guys use. Smokers aren't meant to go much above 300 degrees. Just saying.
I don't have the room for an old house oven...although I thought about it.
I've wanted to get into smoking to go along with bbq, just haven't yet...but after smelling how good this thing smelted when cleaning it up I'll have to get into it.
@@MoonBuiltGarage Yeah, but an old house oven isn't that much bigger. Yeah, smoking meat and BBQ is fun. I'd suggest Kamado Joe or Gorilla Grills if you want to get into it. Best bang for the buck.
You need a role model with this Mopar junk you are working on and these EFI systems you got going on. Well, help, to say the least. I've been an engine machinist and tuner for years. That being said, I am not without my failures, but I've had a lot more dirt, drag and street cars live vs fail. I do it on the side when people have $$$. Otherwise, I've been out of it for 6+ years now and I'm younger than you, I'd guess. The automotive business sucks a$$ and I'll never go back.
