Hey there great video and explanation! I have been using a normal oven but want to make a bigger one to do larger items like rims, or trailing arms off sleds, maybe rear ends etc. Looks great! I'm sure the r value doesn't matter if you can touch it when it's on when working it's fine!!!! I love rockwool, used it for the sidewalls on my garage!

nice job on the Oven and sharing your thoughts ,findings ,and reccomendations on the Oven i am aRetired Woodworker by trade and at one point in my career i went to work for a Competitor that also had a MetalWorking shop in their facility roughly 25 years ago all their Powdercoating had to be sent out because of those shops having the Ovens large enough to accommodate the products the messed up part was always we were at the Powder Coaters time frames on most of our jobs the DIY kits has really changed a lot of the ways Metalworking gets done currently i have a freind /former Coworker who is a Professional Drag Racer and Hot Rod builder who has another Hobby of Off-roading on ATVs and doing fabrication and Performance upgrades he now does all of his ownPowder Coating in-house with a Oven he built that’s also heated with Propane his oven is about half the size of yours as he Specializes on Honda 3 and 4 Wheelers and he does lots of Swing Arm fabrications plus brackets for his Drag Racers. he Powder coats

Wire it into a PID Controller using a gas solenoid and it will regulate your temperature for you and save a bunch of headaches. I'm using a torpedo heater piped into my oven, so same concept.

This is fantastic, you've really inspired me. I'm wanting to start powder coating, but will not pay $$$ on oven. I still don't know why in all the Eastwood powder coating videos they say don't use a gas oven .. I'm beginning to think its because they don't want us to build our own. Thanks 1M for sharing this with us.
p.s. I want you to be safe, I hope you have some fresh air flow while you're waiting beside the oven. I hear the powder coat puts off unhealthy fumes, as does galvanization above about 395F. Also, I will be looking at the temp rating on that insulation. Thanks again.
Thanks for watching and commenting! I don't remember the temp rating for the rockwool insulation that I used but I do remember that it was pretty high. Good luck with your build. And yes, there is a fresh air and exhaust vent for any of those nasty gases.

I like it! Project Farm (Or someone) found the "Blue" oil/water filters with more media, so better. Most regulators are not, they are valves, either plunger or gate. Ones w/diaphragm, springs, viton rubber tipped moving parts are $80+. Grounding is important but placing two feet away from the roofs edge helps get it where rain falls, if it rains. It makes sense to increase the positive electrode surface area, my first thoughts are old carb main jets cleaned on wire wheel. The pipe on nozzle is brilliant.

Thank you so much! I've been using gas for a couple of years now with no negative issues. You just have to be very safe when using gas and respect it. Also use metal gas lines.

Thanks for the video, we think a lot alike. I've been daydreaming about how I want to build mine and I was thinking about gas. A gas grill was a thought for the burners, and I also thought about the grill temp gauge. I got some good insight from you. I like how you have it vented; I was thinking that if the burner went out, it could fill with gas. How many times can you run it on a bottle? TSC sells larger bottles for campers, that could be an option if it goes through those grill bottles too fast.
I get about 5 to 7 runs on the standard size tank. This was actually easy to build but you will need two people to assemble it.
Great video, lots of good information. I will say from my experience in designing analyzer shelters for installation into Canada that you should NOT compress insulation. The air spaces in the material are important to its function. Maybe your walls are still working fine for you, but you have decreased the R value enough that instead of buying R15 rockwool you could have used properly installed R13 fiberglass.
Yes! I do agree on compressing insulation does deminish it's R factor. I took this into consideration during the design phase and it works great for the operating temperature that I'm working with. Thanks for watching and for the insight.

Thanks!!! It appears the door lip lays over the 1.5 x 4 frame to create the area where the gasket goes/seals. Can you explain what size material was used for the door frame?
You're right it is 1.5" x 4" x 16ga. I put a bottom in mine but in hindsight it's not needed. Thanks for watching and commenting!
You have given me a little hope. I keep hearing that it is dangerous to use a gas/propane stove for powder coating. Obviously if you are doing it that must not be true. I only need to do 4 or 5 parts for my car and then I won't need it anymore. Hoping to find a cheap way to build a box. I already own a heater like yours.
Propane gas is used all the time in large manufacturing facilities for powder coating. Just be sure to use a metal gas line inside of the over, not rubber.
I took the guts out of a gas grill and put them under a plate that doubles as a floor inside the oven. Yeah I’m cheap but it works 😂

Great video, I'm looking at making one now because of your video. For a typical powder coating job, when you go from cold to turning off the gas, about how much propane do you use? Looks like you have multiple 20 pound tanks in the video. How many times can you fire up the oven on one tank?
You'll only need one tank. Two, if you want to run one completely empty before you refill and if you run out of fuel in the middle of a job it's nice to have an extra. One tank last many runs.
I have an older gun safe that is 5 ft tall 2 foot wide and 16" deep that I think would make a good powder coat oven. All I would need is to insulate the inside and install heating elements. and controls.

I'd insulate the outside of it, not the inside.
sell the safe for what you can get and build your oven. You could see if they make a high temp liquid insulation but probably not worth the effort.
Hey Bud, love your oven! I’ve been trying infrared electric heaters but I’m not quite hot enough. I have a 3x3x4 box. I do have a infrared gas 20pound bottle heater that i mite try..make an opening set it in front of.. do you have any thoughts on gas infrared heating ? I do plan on doing it better at a later date.
I'm not an authority on using infrared heating so I can't give you an answer on that. But 400 degrees Fahrenheit is still 400 degrees regardless of how you produce it. Good luck with your project!

No I haven't and I apologize. I have been really busy as of late but it is on the list.
Do you have to manually re ignite the heater once you shut it off or does it have a continuous spark so you can just shut off the gas??

Hi. I am back to this project of building an oven. How are you regulating the temp and keeping it steady? I see people using "PID controller" which I am unfamiliar with.
I just open the door a little if it starts to get too hot. I also was told to use a PID, but really I don't need one for doing one off jobs. Now if I were running all day long in a production process then yeah, I could justify a PID.
Also, did the knob to ignite it and adjust the heat not melt inside the oven? Or do you ignite it and take out the knob?
I was taking the knob out every time until I forgot it once. And yes, it melted! I just use a pair of pliers to turn the knob now.
First ,Thank you for sharing your build. Lots of good ideas. The only question I have is your heat source. Is that an open flame? the fumes from powder coating are flammable and could blow up your oven if exposed to open flame.
Fumes from powder coating are not flammable. I've worked in large manufacturing plants for years that used open gas flames in their ovens without incident. However, atomized powder in high concentrate floting in the air can be very flammable!

Hello again. What would be your opinion of using steel fire doors to build the box for a furnace? I can get these free or cheap. I only want to do a few long parts for my own car so I am trying to go cheap. Do you think they would be safe to use?
That's a great idea! My oven is used primarily for just a short amount of time at 375F - 400F degrees, so going off of that and the door in question is STEEL with nothing that will melt or burn you should be good.

So i love your oven by the way. Great job, mine is actually the same size inside and i have currently been using electric with a expensive pid control and 3 elements. I was going to convert to the mr. Heater forced air torpedo style and then i saw your video. My only concern is that unit you use. What about the plastic parts i.e. switches and knobs they dont melt and gas off? Maybe a stupid question but a concern. Id rather spend $105 vs. 300 on a heater thanks
Yes the plastic knob will melt/deform. I took mine off and just use a pair of pliers. Other than that, no issues. I do use a metal line for the gas supply too. Happy to hear you liked my video, and thanks for watching!

Just fond ur channel. In my early research on powder coating stated not to use a gas oven,but here you are using propane as a heat source! What is the difference from gas stove to your oven. Any issues?
I've never had a negative issue with gas. I use to work for a large school furniture manufacturing plant that powder coated and their ovens were gas. Also, if you look on CZcams you will see others that use ovens like mine were gas is used.

Yes, the propane route is more efficient and less expensive than electric heating elements.

No. I had to buy another bag to finish it out and I really don't remember how much of the second bag I used.
What gasket you use to seal the door?
I use the replacement gasket for the Green Egg BBQ pit. Any BBQ replacement gasket should work though.

I just bought that heater because I want to switch to propane oven, where did you get the yellow line from and how was was it?
I think Amazon or a propane supply store for the metal yellow feed line, and it didn't cost much.

I build myself one - Inside dimensions 10 feet long, 3.6 feet wide and 7 feet high, also lpg operated.
for the burner I simply put a 0.8mm mig tip on the end of 5/16 rubber hose from the gas bottle.
On the inside of the oven I used a H shape 1 inch diameter metal tubing with slots cut into it every 1/4 of an inch and the pipe protrudes on the outside
I simply push the rubber pipe inside the metal pipe and that allowed enough oxygen to enter the burner.
Cheap, easy and very effective.

Wait you wanted to use metal studs but you had 155 and youndidnt need that many so you used metal tubing ..super confused
Sorry about that. The metal studs that I wanted to use originally, can only be purchased in a large quantity which was more than what I needed. Mechanical rectangular tubing (1.5"x3") on the other hand was more easily accessible in the amount that I needed. Thanks for watching and commenting.
