I love how the ending is literally just 'yeah, the Army showed up and sorted it' something almost every other zombie film says will never happen.
I’d say that’s the only bad part about this movie because it’s so cliche in most horror movies involving zombies or aliens.

Actually reminds me of World War Z (the novel, not the movie) because the Army DOES show up to try and sort it, but get so bogged down with journalists and trying to treat the horde like a living enemy (most tactics are designed to rout the enemy, not entirely decimate them)... needless to say, the first attempt was an absolute clusterfuck.
When he jumps the fence but fails it’s the same as in hot fuzz when He literally says “have you never heard of a shortcut”

World War Z would be the closest one I can think of... seriously, the cliche is that the Army are a bunch of screw ups or super corrupt and either totally fail or make things worse

Most childish insults aren't directly connected to their literal adult translations, but the joke in this movie was definitely made because of every level that it works at

you missed a line after philip died, where shaun said that he wasn't his dad, but corrected himself and said that he wasn't his dad ANYMORE, showing that he finally accepted him as his father. it was touching.

Fun fact: Simon Pegg and Nick Frost did a skit together recreating their plan to go to the pub but it was for toilet paper (it was made when everyone was joking that toilet paper would run out). It was great.

The most depressing thing about the ending bar scene is the fact that all of shauns friends died asides from liz, right before the military arrived to save them. If they made the right choices they would've probably be all alive.

His delivery of every line in the movie makes me laugh, even his dying heartfelt speech to Shaun, because it’s still a spoof of real zombie movies/tv where in the middle of flesh-eating-chaos there’s always some ridiculously long amount of time for a deep soulful speech.

The funniest scene in the whole movie was when the reanimated zombie was still using a wheelchair. That was such a brilliant idea. It went by so fast that one could have easily missed it. I almost choked on my popcorn.
A lot of this movie is just rewatching it to see all the ridiculous background gags that are only there for a second, in the back.
So much work, planning and love was put into this 'zombie movie'.

I love the bit at 11:12 because Yvonne is living a different zombie movie (which we see at the end) but it’s even funnier because her friends are bigger actors than Shaun’s friends (Martin Freeman, Reece Shearsmith (more of a writer), Tamsin Grieg, Matt Lucas and a woman I don’t recognise) so it seems like Shaun’s the b-side zombie movie as it were.

15:50 just to kind of add another layer of subtext to the call back line: we see earlier on Yvonne has a group like Shawn's but we don't see any of them in that final scene not even in the background.
"Im glad somebody made it" kind of implies she lost her whole group
im so glad someone else seen this cause when she does say it she looks like shes been through hell, its not just a call back to what she said she genuinely must have thought that she was the only one left alive
That's 1 possible take
...but another possibility is that Yvonne saw that Shaun & Liz were clearly by themselves when they were last seen by Yvonne in the company of four other people.
Given that Yvonne is firmly characterized in the movie as a smarter, overall more "got it all together" person than Shaun, it is plausible that Yvonne made sure her entire group made it to safety, then rode along w/ the British Army to The Winchester because she figured Shaun & his people were quite likely trapped & beseiged by The Assailants. Her saying "Glad *somebody* made it" was then acknowledging that only Shaun & Liz managed to get out of the Winchester alive, "but hey ... at least not everybody died!"
@@zenkim6709 that's my exact take on it. The way she said sounded like she thought of it as a 'silver lining' to her efforts in getting the military to the pub.
But i did go far into thinking that the military would never show up there if it weren't for Yvonne because only she knew that Shaun and Co. were there.
So I think, that she meant it as a sigh of relief that her efforts didn't go in vain.
I figured everyone died in Yvonne's group but when she says I'm glad somebody made it I figured that was a way of saying Shaun and Liz actually succeeded as a couple and that their relationship was the one that made it.
I also think this movie is really about Shaun's transition into adulthood. All the events seem to be about Shaun letting go of the past and moving into a different more responsible kind of life.
I always thought of it as a way of giving Shaun the win - he fought the whole movie and him and Liz got out alive. Even though going to Winchester eventually resulted in everybody else's deaths, everyone in Yvonne's group died except for her, and she's meant to be the "perfect" parallel of him, meaning Shaun did something right at least.
If there EVER is a sequel (and there shouldn't be, this movie is perfect) it Should be titled, "Night of the Living Ed."
Wright has said they threw around a title called "from dusk till shaun" but in the end decided the original movie was too perfect to try and replicate in a sequel, which I'm also glad

A detail that I love is that during Shaun’s plan he gets less and less apologetic about killing Philp.

Funfact: the actor playing the Winchester owner actually requested everyone legitimately hit him, even though he was in his 70's. Good thing he had experience as a stunt performer.

Theres one detail that you missed: When Dianne taught the bunch how to act like a zombie, she wanted to see expressions. She said, that Barbara had a great expression of a zombie, even though Barbara wasn't acting, because she was spaced out. This was excellent foreshadowing, because Barbara was already bitten at that point, which would turn her undead later.
That scene is my dad and big sis fav scene. Bcus we caught on it later that she was spaced out

I remember finding this in the 5 dollar bin at blockbusters over a decade ago. I watched it…then I watch it again and then 50 more times. I fell in love with it and it’s sad that it’s such a criminally underrated movie.

Actually, it’s implied Ed didn’t leave the door open, since the last person out and in (he went the shop, remember? Ed has been inside the whole time) was Shaun, so Shaun just said ‘it wasn’t me...’ and when Pete claimed he believed it was Ed, Shaun didn’t confirm or deny and just let him believe it.

I'm only 1:30 in so I'm not sure if it's something that the video comes back to, but I feel you missed a win for the visual metaphor when Liz and Shaun are talking about Ed and how he keeps coming between them being together, whilst Ed is literally framed between the two of them.
And her friends are also between them. Yes. Loved that detail.
I remember getting my mom into this movie, when she was alive. She wasn't a fan of zombie movies, but this one always made her laugh.

Nick frosts little mannerisms when he delivers a line! Just makes everything so brilliant "I'll do it on the night" "and there's a rifle over the bar". He's always doing something that makes it realistic. A comic genius.
Can appreciate Penelope Wilton? She added those convulsions on her death and others were worried it was going too far. She stuck with it and gave us something truly heartbreaking.
Also, you may not notice but when Shaun is talking to Barbara in the kitchen, a shadow movies on the wall. This is to signify the hoodie zombies finding them.
I always say "I'm quite alright Barbara, I ran it under a cold tap" if I get any kind of injury.
And I wouldn't have it any other way.
Fun Fact: During the filming of “Shaun of the dead”, one of the extra’s in zombie make up turn to Edgar Wright and said, “this will definitely be straight to video”. But, the extra didn’t realize he was talking to the director of the movie.

Something in Shaun’s character development I never caught until now - he totally fails to motivate his team by delivering a quote at the beginning(“There’s no I in team, but there IS an I in pie”), and absolutely nails it in the Winchester with his Bertrand Russel quote.
I generally like a lot of realism in movies, so while I did laugh pretty hard, it wasn’t my cup of tea. However, this video made me realize how it’s not JUST a dumb zombie comedy; every line in the beginning connects to the end in some big ways. I appreciate this film MUCH more now.

This movie was so ahead of its time; quick-witted humor, editing, the references, the little details, original storytelling, and the amazing duo that is Simon and Edgar. I really like that over the past decade people have come to genuinely love it too.
The sequences of "wait for this to all blow over" was our work catchphrase during Covid. So funny.

It’s absolutely legen-dairy.
I've always felt that Shaun of the Dead is a perfect film, could not be improved upon in any way, and has aged well, still fantastic many years later.
The thing I love about Edgar Wright, not just his great editing style, but also the fact that everything in the second and third acts is foreshadowed by the first act and you feel like you’re being rewarded for noticing everything, ie, the people from before they became zombies, sorry, z-words, or even just the references to earlier in the movie.
Nick Frost and Simon Pegg are objectively the best comedy acting duo
This is one of the few movies that gets better every time I see it. It was one of my first horror movies that I saw around 8 years old and it introduced me to the Simon Pegg and Nick Frost duo and “Don’t Stop Me Now”. Everyone, never forget this movie.

I feel like the phrase "You got red on you," has an extra layer to it for Shawn. While at first it is used to point out Shawn is a screw up (so much of a loser that he can't even handle a pen properly) and obviously later refers to the blood from the zombies, there are a couple different extra meanings one can pick up on. The first could be that Shawn has the death of his friends on him, since his plan of rounding everyone up and going to the bar essentially got Ed and Liz's friends killed. The other alternative meaning is that Shawn is becoming more of a leader and is taking more charge in his life, red is often used as the color of leadership (think Power Rangers, Optimus Prime or The Powerpuff Girls for example).
While not directly related to leadership, I also view the zed-word blood to be a transition from screw up or loser to the hero. "You've got red on you," at the shop is a bit of downer. "You've got red on you," after killing zombies is a badge of honor.
"The PowerPuff Girls for example" made me smile 😊😊
"Prang" in English usually means the result of a small crash, like denting something, so, when Ed says he 'pranged it' and the car's a write-off, it's funnier for us Brits. :D
5:31 don't miss how he slips on unseen blood on the floor. Seriously. Edgar Wright is a genius.
I think one of the greatest strengths of the Cornetto Trilogy is how each movie begins as a parody of their genre but ends as an exemplar of it. It really shows how much Penn, Wright, and everyone else involved in these films love what they do and what each film is about to the point where they can seamlessly, and lovingly, tear down a genre's tropes before building it back up again, all the same film.
Fun fact:
Some of the staff during production thought that Edgar Wright was a bit too new to be able to pull of a movie like this on such a small budget. Those two walking scenes from the house to the store and then back were some of the most complicated scenes to film, and he filmed them both.

In the electronics store scene, Shaun makes a reference to "Ash" feeling under the weather. This could be an Evil Dead reference as well.
When I first saw this I was expected to kick off into a crazy road house action zombie film, but it didn't and I thought it was a bit flat. Then I saw it again and I thought it was too emotional. THEN I watched it again (years between) and noticed soooo much detail and now I can honestly say it is in my top 5 films of all time! It is a joy to watch! I watch it a few times a year with a beer and smile. In fact watching this has highlighted even more call backs and references that I hadn't noticed. I think it is rather perfect.
I love how they treated zombies as actual slow moving creatures, not the fast moving crap we saw in World War Z.
I like the world war z zombies. They are actually a threat unlike these slow zombies
I mean, it’s kinda the point that the zombies aren’t meant to be a threat in this film, because they aren’t the focus of the film. They’re more like something used to carry the story forward
@@sirpugsalot6113 In my opinion, the thing that makes zombies scary isn't that they're necessarily an individual threat, but that they're effectively an encroaching tide that can't be stopped. They're easy to eliminate and are slow, but most of the time you'd run out of resources to fight them well before they ran out of numbers to throw at you, and all it takes is a single slip up, getting bit just once or caught off guard for a moment, for them to win. There's plenty of monsters out there that are powerful and fast, or that can easily outmatch the target they're after, but they don't tend to capture the sheer exhaustion and hopelessness that comes from slow zombies. More than that though, and as this movie shows, it's ultimately about them being a threat that allows for the characters to build up and have relationships, unlike most horror monsters and fast zombies......

I agree. The thing that made zombies scary was the mass of uncaring horde slowly creeping up on you with nothing you could do about it. Sure, you could take one or even a dozen out, but there are millions of them.
Fast zombies shouldn't exist. There's plenty of fast monsters that could take their place and be even more scary.
The little known fact that I know is that this movie is the only zombie movie with a wheelchair zombie (she's in the seen when they're crossing over to the pub and faking the zombie sounds) and it made segway for like a whole new generations of zombies

This was such a tough movie to get right. At times the emotions are so strong you're like "eh am I still watching a comedy?" But the way they just soon it so quickly again is truly awesome. Always loved this movie and surprisingly it's aged really well ❤️
I feard that the "shortcut" joke that links this movie and Hot Fuzz would never appear, I'm glad I watched till the very end haha

Another brilliant bit of foreshadowing: At the start when Shaun is talking to the 17 year old working in his electronics shop he says "Look, I know you don't want to be working here the rest of you life."
Then at the very end we see him, as a zombie, being used as a trolley boy slave for some supermarket.
Oh btw something you seemed to have missed, is that Shaun is the one who leaves the door open. When he gets back from the shop, he doesn't close it, which allows the one armed zombie to walk in. So Pete is getting pissed off with Ed about something Shaun is doing.
Hot Fuzz and The World's End next please!!!
I watched The World's End a week ago with zero knowledge of the plot and I honestly loved it so much that I had to watch Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz, too. The way Edgar Wright foreshadows, the details he puts into every scene, it is magnificient.
I don’t know if anyone has ever noticed but at 16:48 the tv programme says the virus was caused by ‘rage infected monkeys’ which is actually a reference to 28 days later

One thing never get's enough credit is the score for this movie, the sound and music on this Film were top notch
The "short cut" scene in Hot Fuzz is such a perfect call-back to the one in this movie.

Shawn of the Dead is the greatest movie ever. Hot Fuzz is up there as well. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are amazing together, they craft gold.

The "Don't stop me now" scene is my favorite piece of cinematography ever. It's when I fell in love with Edgar Wright.
It's funnier because they are actually hitting the zombie to the beat which is something most of us would do.
Like when I Listen to music my walking pace matches the song.

to be honest, this flick captures exactly what it feels like with a hangover in the morning.
If you loved shaun of the dead, you should finish the cornetto - trilogy. (Worlds end and Hot fuzz). I grew up with those movies and they, especially hot fuzz are masterful, if a bit gory.
Go watch a British sitcom called “black books” it’s got that guy in it(Dylan Moran) in his most famous roll.
Simon peg and nick frost also cameo!(aswell as few other actors from this in).
And "Spaced" for those pre-Shaun references. Like "Tyres"
Watch Hot fuzz it’s got both the guys on the cover and they basically become besties in it!
Black Books is amazing. Recomend heavily, it's got Bill Baily and Tasman Greig, both amazing.
I don't think I'd enjoy a Dylan Moran roll. It'd be very bitter. Like cigarettes, piss and vinegar.
I'd be the first person to admit that I still don't appreciate this movie enough.
I completely understand that Ed's a gifted comedic writer/director. I thought the World's End was hilarious and Hot Fuzz is one of my all time favorite movies. For some reason or another, this one just hasn't clicked with me to this day.... despite carrying so many of Ed's now trademark humor and ticks.
But if you do indeed plan to do Hot Fuzz soon..... oooooh BOY!!
Watching this video gave me an even more amazement and respect for this movie (and other movie in Cornetto Trilogy). I enjoyed it first, admired it second, amazed third, and from fourth watching I started to worshiped the trilogy.
The cherry on top was the end song by Queen “You’re my best friend”
I watched this movie so many damn times and didn't notice Yvonne's version of the "ex-partner" was Martin Freeman.
After 2 dozen times of rewatching this film and I'm still discovering hidden things about this film. Amazing
When this movie came out my sister and I snuck into the cinema to watch it (we were 12 and 13). We were the only people laughing the whole time.
I quote 'ran it under a cold tap' with my teeth clenched whenever I get the chance (and due to me being clumsy as hell, it happens a lot) so having you include my favorite scene made my day.
I can't believe you didn't win the fact that Shaun's look towards the end with the bloody white shirt and red thingy tied around his head is another homage to "Battle Royale" where there was a character who was dressed the same way!
The title of this video is incorrect, because I could list a gazillion more great things about this movie, from the fact that Shaun yawning at the start and end is a homage to the opening shot of Day of the Dead, through to the poster on Shaun's wall for the band Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster from a music video Edgar Wright directed but who also are the band on Ed's tape in the car when Philip dies. Oh this film is so so so detailed.
You did such a great job on this! Thanks for the work you put in on making me remember how much I absolutely love this series.
