They actually didn’t want him to have that T-Rex line because it made him seem more stupid and the writers wanted him to seem more intelligent but Edgar decided to keep it in because it was funny and he said his intelligence is proven throughout the film
Honestly I'm glad they kept it in, the line gives more backstory and insight into Baby's 'weaknesses' as much as his 'strengths'
It also reflects when he said to debora that he’d spoken to her more than anyone all year in the laundromat scene. Probably hasn’t spoken that much his whole life.
To me it always came off as him having read the name before, but never having heard it, since hes a) always got his headphones in (so wouldnt be able to hear other people talking about them, in the off chance they are), and b) his dad is deaf, so wouldnt be able to say the name, and would most likely just spell it out if he ever referenced them.
When baby says "no" as his "first words" i figured darling and buddy laughed because commonly a baby's literal first word is no lmao

One of my favourite little details which benefited from me watching it through headphones is that when Griff takes out one of Baby's headphones in the early scene, the music playing shifts to one side to mimic the how Baby is now hearing the music

Another great thing: the opening car chase is (mostly) geographically plausible. Up until they enter the highway, all those streets are connected and in order. You can track in on google maps. There is a small jump from where they get on the highway to where they first show them on the highway, and a bigger jump from where they get off to the parking garage, but that's about it.
No one's ever noticed that the whole movie set and style was like 50's to 60's style. I even thought it was set on those decades, until the smart phone showed up that means it was set on 2010's. It's just clearly shows how he loves this style, and adding his style to the whole movie, because of course, this movie is all about himself.

One thing I noticed while rewatching is that when he's getting coffee for the jobs it's always black, but once he thinks he's "out" and finally orders a coffee for himself from the diner, he gets cream and sugar.

It was adrenaline, he saw his wife die and was filled with anger and adrenaline which helped him.
Fun theory: I always think that Buddy is basically future Baby if he keeps up with the life of crime. Both don't talk much to other people outside of their lovers and both share their love for music, probably why Buddy empathizes with Baby throughout most of the movie.
Also notice how Buddy is always careful and reserved when it comes to dealing with heist until Monica is dead. After that he goes full Bats mode on Baby
I know this video is 3 years old at this point, but, another thing that was missed, if you watch Baby walk through the junkyard from 17:13 to 17:18 you can see the same red WRX that he was driving in the first part of the movie

I love how his foster dad feels the speaker to “hear” the music, and later when baby gets guns shot near his ears, he can’t hear as well, so when Deborah is driving the car he is in the passenger seat, and puts his hand on the speaker the same way his foster dad did. Someone may have already said this but I love this detail.

Excellent, yeah, at that moment in the movie, he can't hear because buddy had shot that 45 next to both of his ears. He want to hear his mom's voice in the speakers so he puts his hand on the speaker. Nice.

just something I noticed, But Baby moves the same way he drives- it’s fluid and lyrical, almost like dancing. As someone who moves like that I know it is DIFFICULT to string movemt like that together- so extra kudos to the actor for that
Okay I know this is a really obscure detail, but it really really amazed me when I saw it. The scene where Baby steals the old lady's car (where he returns her purse) and he sits there messing with the radio to find a song to drive to, he ends up on station 97.1 I live in Atlanta, where the movie was staged and shot, and 97.1 is a classic rock station, which obviously fits with what song comes on. The fact that a detail like that was thought out blows me away

3:48 what i love is how the first time Baby pulls out some red-rimmed sunglasses at first after the glasses are knocked away. For the (majority) of the rest of the film we see him in black-rimmed sunglasses so we can assume those are his sunglasses of choice. When John Bernthal's character knocks the red-rimmed sunglasses off only then does he pull out the black-rimmed sunglasses. Baby knew that the red rimmed glasses were getting broken as well and planned ahead. Edgar Wright will always be my favourite director for details like this
Edgar Wright is a perfect example of how style IS substance, if you know what you're doing. His extremely stylized and detail-filled method of directing lets him incorporate an immense amount of meaning into everything.

I like how I can still feel genuinely sympathetic for Buddy despite how things went. He was certainly not a good guy, but the fact that the care between him and Darling was actually real and her death sent him into such a rage, on top of him trying to actually bond with Baby and then basically giving him the free getaway before Bats showed up. Like, if Bats hadn't showed up and Buddy did let Baby go, that's basically at least a morally gray happy ending.
Bats definitely felt like he would be the antagonist, but even his crazy ass did keep from just popping Baby in that car. At first you might have been led to think it was restraint because of Doc, but nah this mans just straight up nukes Doc's contact in a heartbeat. So even he has moments where he's still a human with some kind of decency to him, even if he *does* then turn around and do literally every illegal and or bad thing he can think of to make things go haywire.
All in all I did like the movie. I didn't actually expect them to get caught at the border, but now that I think about it of course they would... after all, Baby wasn't the one driving that getaway car since he'd been knocked out.
I watched this movie for the first time recently and it's already one of my favorite movies ever. The fact that almost every sound effect is timed to the music is just amazing
Man I’m late but something I thought was super cool was how Doc told him he’d have to keep his foot on the gas for 25 years. Then after turning himself in he got sentenced 25 years in prison. It makes the connection that if he kept running he wouldn’t be free anyway. It would feel like a prison. But in the end he makes the right choice and gets parole so happy ending!
have you noticed in the scene of him driving away with debora. he has his hand on the speaker to feel the vibrations, seens he went deaf from the gunshots but i guess happy enough :)
@@Trixless I don't think he was deafened by the gunshots cause you can still hear things when it's going from his perspective, just faintly. Seems like he just damaged his hearing further if anything.

The bull on TV being a foreshadow of Darling’s remarks on the relentless nature of Buddy wasn’t so hard to catch after the second time around, but I believe there’s another parallel you can draw between the bull and Darling’s lines: she said something about “betting on all reds at the roulette table” when Buddy asked what they’d do after the heist (the gas stop gum scene I believe), and casino roulettes give you an option to bet on RED or BLACK. Just an observation.
Another interesting foreshadow is Bats wearing a long-sleeve shirt with a king of hearts design on it, a card known for its moniker “suicide king” due to the appearance. His demise wasn’t from suicide, but the smell of death was right under our noses the entire time.

First movie I nearly cried from in years. Baby is set up as an innocent, cute and sweet character, when they arrested him I felt so horrible for him. Truly a wonderful movie

My own addition to this discussion(might have been mentioned elsewhere). Buddy and Darling are a parallel to Miles and Debora, although they kept running. Buddy would do anything for Darling(and she for him) and Baby would probably do the same for Debora(and she for him).
They are B(uddy) and D(arling), the ones that kept going down the bad path until they could do no other thing, while B(aby) and D(ebora) stopped before the point of no return.
Both Buddy and Baby are capable of compassion(like Buddy bonding a bit with Baby, or telling him to run away), but also destruction, especially if it concerns the one they love.

Same, microphone and DAW feedback through my deep-seated earbuds when I was a mid-teen made me temporarily deaf. Plus drumming. I often don't notice the tinnitus anymore until I start binging music again, guess my brain learned how to filter stuff out until I want to hear a whole spectrum

Wow. When Baby's ears start ringing badly near the end, if you're watching with headphones you'll notice that when his left ear goes deaf, your left ear starts ringing even though it looks like his right one since the camera's facing him.

My absolute favorite detail is when Baby and Deborah are in the car after their "wining and dining". Something extremely subtle is immediately after she closes the door to leave the tinnitus returns, yet besides this the only times Baby's tinnitus is prevalent are when he's not listening to music. Besides music, Deborah is one of the only things that allows him to focus on life, such that his tinnitus does not bother him.

No, the true insult is when Bats says "Tequila" in time with the song at the end and Baby looks at him shocked!
Also buddy and darling are a representation of what baby and Deborah could have been. It was all about the choices he made throughout that differentiated him from buddy. Had he let Deborah try to ram through the police barricade there is a chance they could have made it. And that would have turned them into buddy and darling. But like he told her "you don't belong in this world" saving her from that life of constantly having to be on the run. Buddy is my favorite character because of that reason. The relationship between him and baby make the movie for me. It's the reason he tries to protect baby throughout the film and defend him from bats and griff the two worst people in the movie. He sees alot in himself and relates to him. And baby connects with buddy in the same way. We saw him kill bats because he knew that if he didnt he would always be a threat to Deborah's safety. And in turn we see Buddy turn into the villain once Darling dies something that is teased earlier on in the film be is somewhat disregarded because the film makes us think Bats is the real threat.
Think I just realized something rewatching this movie. JD losing his gun wasn’t just a showcase of him being an idiot and Doc being ruthless, it was setting up the necessity for them to buy new guns later on.
i dunno if you caught this but when Baby tells Debbie "You don't belong in this world," it's another sample! Joe signed something similar to Baby earlier in the film

I have permanent tinnitus. I don't know why, I've had it since I was born. Everyone, and I mean everyone, needs to wear hearing protection when working with loud machinery. Turn down your music. *You do not want tinnitus.* It's a background to everything you do. You won't sleep. You hear it in your dreams. It never stops. Never falters. Always ringing.
Be careful with your ears. You can't reverse hearing damage.

When i first saw this i was blown away by its visual style and blend of music. It was a dream to watch and has great rewatchability every time

The past two nights of accidentally stayed up till 4:00 a.m. watching your videos. Your videos have made me remember how much I love movies. Baby driver is my favorite movie of all time and watching this video made me love it that much more. Having someone else point out to you these little details that even after watching it like five times I never noticed just makes it feel new and refreshing. I love your content and I hope you can continue for the years to come.
The FACT that they specifically use a Subaru Impreza WRX that's painted red in the first scene clearly shows some attention to detail. For one, WRX's are typically painted blue, with gold rims. It's a stereotype that sportier-trim Subarus are known to be blue and gold. Mixing that up to red and black may have exemplified how different Baby's life is compared to others. Or maybe they just got a red and black WRX. Who knows.
But on the topic of that WRX, *good god the driving.* Don't get me wrong, the bits where sound effects are on the beat with the songs are just utterly blissful, but *GOD* is the driving good. It's so beautifully done that I didn't know it was possible to make an art out of driving. It's what got me hooked on the movie and it's my favorite part for sure.
In the script, it was originally going to be a Honda Civic, also in red. They probably picked the WRX as it can pull off maneuvers the Civic can't (AWD vs. FWD, go figure) while still being understated and blending in with traffic, especially on that shell game scene with the Chevy Cruze and VW Jetta.
The Subaru WRX STI has got me loving them again, I USED to love them and forgot, and now I remembered them when this movie came out and hope of owning an old Suburu WRX STI or not one day when I grow up.
@@karlostrino3620 I know that I'm super late to commenting this, but one of the WRXs was actually converted to RWD to be able to do some of the stunts. I believe the one that does that amazing 180 between the van and the truck in the alley in the opening sequence was the RWD one

@@landonray9517 the drift in that scene was practical; what they did was composite in the obstructions that he drifted around.
A fun one I noticed on my second viewing:
Following the Hocus Pocus chase scene, Baby is running down the street after buddy shoots his iPod. He holds two fingers to his throat while he's sprinting and I assume he was "listening" to the beat of his pulse. He didn't have any music at the time, and he's shown "listening" to music at the end of the movie with his hand (something he learned from Joe).
14:30 Buddy plays brighton by queens and this is the same song that Buddy and Baby listen and vibe to together. pretty sad...

This video blew my mind. I didn’t catch 90% of the stuff mentioned in this video, haha. I just saw it as a cool action movie.
People do the same with Hot Fuzz seeing it as a cool action cop movie, but if you know British crime dramas, or British television in general it has so many more layers. From the homages to old shows, bits people have played, and even movies. Freaking love Wrights movies.

Edgar and the people involved with props, costumes, set design, cinematography have all openly talked about the intent behind half the stuff in this video in behind the scenes footage. Sometimes people give a shit about their craft and put in meaning for those who love the art and not just the spectacle (and it's fine to just love the spectacle, but to hand-wave away the care and attention an artist puts into their work when art is ABOUT the work is just rude).
The "drapes are blue because they're blue" line isn't even true for books lol. I know it's the Hot Meme About English Class to act like the author could never intend their details to mean anything, but that's similarly bullshit. It's called short-hand and it's an exceptionally useful tool for setting a scene/character efficiently and subtlety.

Here, years later and I gotta say sometimes style is substance, and I feel like that’s something even harder to do, to make it perfectly balanced with the right amount of style that is bursting out of your mind yet still isn’t too much that it turns you off.
Some of my favorite films and games are like that, you can give me a story concept that’s so simple that a AI can come up with it, yet the style can turn that simplicity into something astonishing, and when each day we get tools that make film and game creation easier and easier, when an iPhone can shoot in 4K 60fps? When you can get realistic scenery, character and lighting just like that with game engine like UE5? You have to have certain personal style to stay in people’s heart.
So to that I say, god bless this film, I love it so much.
For the record, your ears do ring immediately after hearing gunshots. I have experience, guns are loud af
people who have never heard gunshots don't know how loud they are, even if you did not have tinnitus and heard the gunshots next to your ear, you might get deaf in one of your ears. there is a reason they war headphones when shooting.
@@RealCristianoPenaldo While a gunshot is loud as hell it blows out your eardrum at most, making you deaf for 3-4 weeks, but then you get your hearing back.
Same thing with explosions, permanent damage is exceedingly rare.

it may be creeping but actual damage isnt a thing that happens every time you shoot a firearm without ear plugs in. After three years in the infantry and having my earpro fall out quite often even with something as large as a M2 i still have very good hearing.
As for what was done in the movie, it was at least somewhat accurate.

It's the attention to detail that I just adore in the film. I love the scene where he's getting coffee and listening to music. Sure it isn't realistic that graffiti follows lyrics, but it is so stylised, like how gunshots going along to music isn't realistic, but as a viewer it is such a cool and incredible experience.
as someone with tinnitus, the ringing in quiet scenes is both a nice and accurate detail and slightly painful
Baby Driver is honestly one of those rare gems that suddenly appears under the radar among the more higher pitched and advertised movies. This movie will go down into the collection of favorites for most people, including myself.
3:40 One of my favorite “timed” gags in the film. This woman is shouting up (presumably at her boyfriend or husband who is being unfaithful) and screaming “Is she in there?” Cue the song’s chorus: “Yeah.”
What about all the main characters names either start with a B or a D like Baby Driver? Or is that too obvious?

OKAY, EVERYONE. I know this is super late to this, but I'm watching the movie as I write this, and I'm wearing HEADPHONES. This movie is so f*cking well done, that when Baby takes an Earbud out, the music continues in the earbud that's in for him, and the rest of the scene continues in his open ear earbud. Another absolute Gem of a detail. Right now I'm in the First Diner scene, and it can be heard in the Post-First Heist meeting so far. He takes out his left earbud, and the scene plays through that one, while the songs have played in the right earbud he has in still. Freaking absolute WIN!

If you watch the full scene of 15:27, you realise that Baby is holding his hand up to the speaker and feeling the vibrations of the song just like his foster dad did earlier on in the film.
When I first saw it I wanted to cry, it’s such a sweet little scene.
as someone with tinnitus, I'm almost always wearing earbuds because (at least in my case) hearing sound helps me forget the ringing, if it gets to quiet it's harder to drone out and gives me headaches, so baby having a love for music despite hearing issues makes sense
