  • Welcome to Type 2, where we discuss everything about type 2 diabetes in a way that everyone can understand. I’m doctor Vladmir Carvalho, an endocrinologist, and today I will tell you why it is possible to reverse Pre-diabetes.
    In this video, I discuss the possibility of reversing pre-diabetes and early-stage type 2 diabetes. Pre-diabetes is a condition where blood sugar is higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. I explain that pre-diabetes and early-stage type 2 diabetes can definitely be reversed if there are enough functional beta cells. However, if you wait for too long, until all the beta cells are dead or dysfunctional, then reversal is impossible.
    I also discuss how overeating unhealthy foods, especially refined foods, can lead to insulin resistance and make your beta cells tired, and how diet and increasing glucose uptake through exercise can help reverse pre-diabetes and early-stage type 2 diabetes. Medications can also be used to reduce glucose and insulin resistance for those who don't want to change their diet or exercise.
    Disclaimer:
    Dr. Vladmir Carvalho is a real Doctor. He graduated from medical school in 2012 (Bachelor’s) and 2015 (Master’s). Now he is a Ph.D. candidate in the department of endocrinology, at Southeast University.

    Thank you very much for this information. I have been pre-diabetic for several years however I did not understand what it was. Only recently I have begun researching what pre-diabetes is, and what to do about it. Thank you so much!

      It depends on your goal and how comfortable you feel like that. However, doing exercise before or after are both better than not exercising.

    • @Type-2-Diabetes
      @Type-2-Diabetes  Před rokem +1

      You are welcome. Some people can and some cannot. You can have dysfunction because of temporary things like glucolipotoxicity or permanent things like fibrosis and β-cell death. I will make a video on that.

      @Type2D Thank you. Would be great to know what to look for in the blood work to get more insights on beta cells health. Also, how to reverse glucolipotoxicity to improve the beta cell function?
      Thanks again for your videos. They have been very informative.

      @@nilesh23 One of the things to look for is the C-peptide test that I talked about in Type 2 Diabetes #21. I will make more videos about beta cell function and explain acute vs chronic changes. I'm glad you find my videos helpful. Thanks.

    Im a bodybuilder and dont compete. I lost a lot of weight from 107 kilo to 89kilo. My bloodsugar is normal and i dont need to take meds anymore. I changed my carb intake and im still going to the gym but im not gaining muscle. How can i build muscle? Are beta beta cells not working anymore?

    • @Type-2-Diabetes
      @Type-2-Diabetes  Před rokem

      When were you diagnosed? And you had been taking meds for how long? If you lost weight because of diabetes or meds, it's different from losing weight from the diet. Are you on a very low carb diet? If yes, you will have to work much harder to put on muscles, because the size of muscles depends to some extent on glycogen + water, and less glucose leads to less glycogen. Just from this text it's not clear what the problem is.

      @@Type-2-Diabetes the problem is that since im a diabetic im still losing weight without doing any effort. This is the tricky part, my bloodsugar is 5.3 and is stable. Im not taking metformine instead im taking berberine. Yes i go to the gym 4x a week and yes i changed my diet. From 4000 calories im eating now 3000 calories. Im doing low carb and for my carb intake im eating more fiber and wheat food for example brown rice, brown bread, brown pasta..

    Hi doctor my hba1c is 6.5 fasting sugar 92...and also have mild anemia and hypothyroidism. Am I diabetic?

    • @Type-2-Diabetes
      @Type-2-Diabetes  Před rokem

      HbA1c of 6.5% or higher indicates diabetes, but here we would repeat that test just in case. And even if the second test doesn't reach 6.5 you should still make some changes and not let it increase. Fasting 92 is not bad, I think your post-meal blood glucose is higher than normal, for you to get that 6.5. But can check it to be sure.

    In this case reverse means cure ??

    • @Type-2-Diabetes
      @Type-2-Diabetes  Před rokem +3

      You can say that, but I wouldn't say cure because I don't think it was a disease in the first place. It's just a condition of your body (that can be changed).

      @@Type-2-Diabetes so is it like if pancreas can start producing beta cells as usual we can say diabetes is cured.?? Is there any surgery or treatment for this??
