  • Do you sound breathy when you sing, or do you sound way too harsh?
    We’re going to talk about onsets/releases, some exercises to help produce clear sound while singing, and then we’ll talk about how to use breathy singing and the glottal attacks to your advantage.
    Onsets are responsible for producing a vocal tone that is either breathy, harsh, or balanced. Air passing through two vocal folds that are not compressed enough causes the singer to sound breathy, shy, or young. It can also cause a lot of vocal strain. If the vocal folds are compressed too much, it produces a very harsh sound that also causes vocal strain.
    We’re going to talk about onsets/releases, some exercises to help produce clear sound while singing, and then we’ll talk about how to use breathy singing and the glottal attacks to your advantage.

    I have been on testosterone for a month and just had my voice break for the first time! Supposedly onsets will help (and I don't want to just be clearing my throat a bunch and getting scratchy). I used to take lessons, but we never talked about onsets specifically - although I did get scolded for singing "ha" instead of "ah." I love this! The harsh releases make me think of Heathers the Musical - where Veronica (and some other singers) have such a distinctive wry, sarcastic, jerk-around kind of singing style? Love it, thanks!
    Edit: Oh!! Some of my warmups were that singing-yawn like at 4:55, and singing siren noises. I haven't looked up vocal technique too much online because, from what little I saw, it's very different among teachers so you should stick to just one person to learn from. But since I'm not currently in lessons, here I am

    May I just say that your speaking voice is so beautiful. Balanced, clear articulation, not too high, not too low, it sounds so beautiful, healthy and clear. :-)

    Hi!! I have a very breathy voice when I sing and so I wanna ask.. When I do these exercises, do I do it with the breathy voice and it will turn into the sharp one eventually, right?? Because when I try to do them using sharp voice it’s not comfortable and my throat hurts..

    • @OneMusicSchool
      @OneMusicSchool  Před 3 lety +1

      From your comment, I guessing you’re not using proper breath support and pushing your voice. Sometimes, when one is not using the proper breathing techniques, tension is the result. I advise you go back the beginning of this vocal series and see if you’re missing a step. First use proper posture, the second is proper breath support. I believe the third video is about releasing tension, and I think that you’d help. I hope the series helps you and helps you sing with less tension.

      You have to know the context before you get to the exercise. Even if you do have an extensive vocal background, it’s important to know the “why” behind the vocal warmup.
