- I have struggled my entire life with vocal pain, vocal strain, and illness that used to render my body and my voice useless. After years of study, consulting with ENT specialists, and sessions with speech therapists, I have learned what works for me in order to keep my voice healthy and tension free. I have also learned a few things that had been doing in the past that were actually hurting me rather than helping me. Hopefully you can learn from my past mistakes to help you maintain your voice to help you sing for a lifetime.
The opinions shared in this video are my own and are drawn from my personal experiences as as voice teacher and as a vocalist, however, everyone has different needs, and it is important to consult professionals in your area if you have any vocal concerns.

I completely forgot to mention smoking! Smoking can change the vocal cords causing hoarseness, a deepening of the voice, and could develop polyps or bumps on the vocal cords. Because the vocal cords cannot fully compress with polyps, that causes the voice to sound breathy and hoarse. It is in the singer’s best interest to stop smoking or to limit exposure to secondhand smoke.
Thanks, Katie. For me, I can't eat anything before a gig or a show. I have to perform hungry. So I eat somewhere around 2 to 4 hours ahead of time. I have a drink after the gig only and if it's a long gig, I might have coffee before hour 3. I also get dry mouth (thanks chemo) so I swig Biotene before and during. And water! I quit smoking about 1.5 years ago and gained range and lung capacity back. So, yeah,,,,smoking not good for the voice. I've been singing professionally for almost 40 years and your advice is excellent. Thank you again, you're a delight.
All very true! I can’t eat before I sing either, and I’ve learned to sing hungry. I should make a part II for this video! There’s so much that I need to mention. Thanks for being here and sharing what’s working for you!
Thank you for these vocal care tips. I didn't know these things. I'd never thought about how warm water is better, as cold contracts the vocal cords. And here I am with a big mug of creamy coffee too! Any advice on what to look for in a coffee substitute? Could Macha Tea be vocally strengthening? May need an index card with "can't speak, doing vocal training" to show people I'm not ignoring them. Be a great extended moment for solid silent pray too!! Thank you Katie for this spiritual & vocal training, so we can stronger vocalize our spirituality with songs of rejoicing. Appreciate your way of teaching. The way you explain new things about the unknown, makes me feel like I've known it all the time! Never connected the dots as you effortless, ever so elegantly explained the difficult with ease. The biggest message in your teachings today, for me was ...."Know thyself". Lovely sweetness in your goodbye. We will
take care of ourselves, as you Katie 🙏 Hope you're having a super great happy burp free day. Love you class 💜
Unfortunately, Matcha has a lot of caffeine in it. Great antioxidant, but not the greatest for singers. I'm glad that you're enjoying these videos. they have been a lot of fun to make, but they have been great for my studio students as well as my virtual students :). Hopefully they point people in a good direction.
Thank you so much i do not have to search Google anymore for how to help my voice Lol thank you and God bless.😊
Thank you so much for watching! It means a lot.
Thank you for all of the great tips. Here is something related to many of the foods you mentioned. Chocolate, carbonated, sugars and many other foods are also High in Acid. For me I have Acid Reflux in my throat and esophagus. For many people Hi acid foods cause throat irritation and swelling in the esophagus. I recommend researching this and the book that changed my life. Dropping Acid by Dr. Jamie Kaufman .
Great advice! I struggled with terrible acid reflux myself, and I completely understand where you are coming from.
Please post some of your gigs I really wanna hear you play on stage
Actually, I have one in my Patreon page ❤️.
OH ok
Great advise. Thank you for sharing this. 😀😀😀😀
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it.
Spot on, the entire video! Also, and I may have missed this if you said it, but alcohol and cough drops are very bad for the vocal cords as well.
Yes! I completely forgot to mention that, so thanks for adding to the list.
I really need this thanks katie
This makes me so happy that this helped you :). Thanks for watching!
No.... Thank you for uploading your vids!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Hold on, what is that bangin outro song?
Another great and informative video by the way, very helpful for anyone trying to learn how to properly use their voice, myself included. Thanks again Katie! So much appreciated😄
Isn't it cool? It's from CZcams's creator studio, so it's royalty free :).
Aww Katie! Those allergies! Thank you so much, though, for the excellent information. I didn't know a lot of that.
Thanks for being here! I really appreciate it. Yeah, those allergies are rough, but I feel like a completely different person now that I've eliminated the things that were hurting my body. Night and day!
@@OneMusicSchool I know how you feel! Eating healthy is a life changer!
Could you please do the acoustic tutorial for too close by Alex clare?
Thank you so much for your videos, they are awesome. I have a question for you, would you consider making a So Will I by Hillsong ukulele tutorial?
I do love that song. I have to see if I can fit it in my schedule.
@@OneMusicSchool I can't believe you answer :D I love your videos, currently I am learning on my ukulele "What a beautiful name it is" by Hillsong thanks to your tutorial, God bless you!
I.ve just found your channel! I have a very dry voice in the run up to a gig, then sing fine when I get to perform-mostly. Can bendrofluazide dry the voice out? Its a diuretic for high blood pressure
That’s a very good question, but I don’t know. I think talking to your primary doctor would be the best place to find out.
multiple food allergies is a big mood. I have Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, and sometimes don't even realize how tight my throat is from food reactions until i take benadryl and can breathe openly again
Tea has a lot of caffein also, unless it is herbal. I drink Ginger tea, which is anti inflammatory.
Yes! Absolutely. A cup of Green tea contains 41 mg of caffeine and black anywhere between 60-75 mg of caffeine. I can only have tea so I have to be careful. A Star sucks refresher has 45 mg of caffeine. I had someone tell me it was caffeine free. Nope!
Love ginger tea!
Hi! will you please teach us hot to play "almost over you" by Sheena Easton? Thank you very much... All my love from Argentina... You rule!
I've never heard of that artist.
Is she popular where you are? It's nice to hear new music.
@@OneMusicSchool Hi! she's not popular, but that song is sung in Spanish by "Sandra Mihanovich" one of the most talented voices in Argentina. I thought that maybe, you would know the original song in English. "todo me recuerda a ti" is the name of the song.
can you please do a tutorial on Taylor Swift's new song soon you'll get better? I would really like to be able to play it and do a cover for the first time.
👍
Thanks for watching!!! Congratulations on winning the first comment!
@@OneMusicSchool Thank you for the awesome videos! When I bought my first ukulele, yours was the channel I found and loved. You really fueled my desire to learn!!! 🥰
That’s so encouraging to hear! Thank you for taking the time to tell me 😀.
Do you play piano?
Yes, I do.
