Foreword:
This video intended for absolute beginners. There is very little "theory" in this video. It begins very basic, teaches you what to listen for, gives you exercises to plays with, discusses how to make use of it, what issues to avoid, and other considerations. I've been meaning to make this video for a long time but it's very challenging to do it right. I hope this is the most helpful video I've made so far for those who are struggling to get started. ❤️
The most important thing when getting started is developing a smooth, comfortable, higher and light foundation. Often when beginners start, they will focus on just trying to raise their pitch and keep it up. However, pitch alone is an incomplete and less useful picture. Our control of pitch is massively influenced by "vocal weight". The more vocal weight you have, the harder it will be for you to go higher. The less vocal weight you have, the easier it will be for you to go higher.
It's extremely challenging to normalize and get comfortable with higher pitches unless we adequately reduce our vocal weight. Pitch and weight need to be considered together, otherwise voice makes very little sense. In terms of feminization, weight very important while pitch is subordinate to weight.
Utilize these exercises to help you explore the quality higher pitch with lighter weight. Once you find a sound that is close to target, work on fluidly speaking and trying to get genuinely comfortable with that cleaner, lighter, and higher sound. Avoid accidentally going to high into your falsetto (see mistakes video) and avoid being too breathy. See "avoiding breathiness" in this video to understand how that sounds.
This stage of vocal modification is very much about establishing a comfortable, reliable, and light foundation to build off of. Resonance modification will come after this foundation is established and reliable. Listen to the section "The Foundation" to hear what I am referring to. Aim for a target pitch area of 180-220 Hz at first (or shoot for what's comfortable - just avoid staying too low to get sufficient weight reduction).
Individuals who have watched my previous "VOCAL FOLD MASS" video should know vocal weight and vocal fold mass are essentially the same thing. Vocal weight is being used to describe the auditory quality while vocal fold mass is more a physiological description of the event. Over the last 8 months I have preferred describing this to beginners as "vocal weight" for several reasons I'll discuss in a later video. Vocal weight is often connected to descriptions of "head voice", "vocal fold mass", "density of sound", "spectral rolloff".

I actually clicked on this assuming it was for voice acting, not sure why I had that assumption. But it never occurred to me that Trans people would have to work on their voices in addition to all the other changes to make them more themselves. A bit of an eye opening moment.
So awesome to give you a bit of an awakening! Voice has been a long standing challenge for transpeople and gnc people to align their presentation with their identity. I am working to help change that the most I can!

The trans community seems to have this contradiction of saying gender is a spectrum and then also saying "THIS is what means to be male, so I am male" and "THIS is what it means to be female, so I am female" -- why go through the trouble of conforming to stereotypes?
@@blossom357 it's not about conforming. It's about having a sound you personally want. The challenge has been longstanding due to the lack of clear and effective community resources for anyone to change their voice to whatever they want.
In my personal case, I did not put in all the effort I have to get where I am today to *appease* cis people. I did it because it's what *I* wanted. I have liberated my voice and can sound however I want now. I'm not telling anyone "this is what it means to be male" "this is what it means to be female". In fact I constantly preach in my community that there is no such thing as a male or female voice. Hormones influence the physiology a bit and socialization pressures us into certain behaviors. Male and female voice is an acoustic illusion, not some essentialist quality.

Nothing wrong with having a deep voice as a woman. Some guys and ladies find that pretty hot. But if you wanna train your voice to sound more feminine, that’s obv. fine too.

If you want to have your voice sound more feminine (or should I say, brighter?) By all means, go for it! I respect the good effort being made
But as Sun said, your voice is fine by itself, your voice as it is now is alright and good enough, it's great! If it gives you any solace to hear another person's opinions on voices, I actually really really love more masculine/darker and deeper girl's voices. There was a VA who would do a particularly low and deep sounding voice that almost sounded like a dude and every time I swear Id crush harder on that person.
My point is, you're enough as you are, but if you want to change yourself and you believe it will make you happier, definitely go for it!

I’m a Transgender female Guitarist /vocalist I was in a punk band Called CRUCIFIX 1984 (this was my Punk band not my Rock bands of the 70’s) and I’ve had intense voice lessons throughout my career. In my younger years it was Weight & depth and pitch going to the lower registers to sound more adult male than a teenaged girl. After I accomplished my goal I had great power and Range. But now after speaking and singing more masculine for over 40 years I’ve transitioned and now I’m reversing the process And your video’s have helped me immensely. I’ve been speaking in my new voice for 3 days now and recording it and coming back to this exercise. I have a music studio in San Francisco and today was the first time I spoke in my new voice in training to a customer. 😊 I think it sounded good! Thank You!

The nice part is that in the Russian language almost all verbs and pronouns have endings that determine gender.

I've had this video in an open tab on my browser for maybe a year. I've lived a life that's basically conditioned me to be mostly non-verbal even before coming to terms with being trans and for the longest time the most times I've actually spoken things aloud was to use voice-commands to change the radio station while driving, always with cringeworthy and discouraging results when trying to coach those vocalizations in a more feminine register.

I'm cisfemale and my voice is super deep naturally, people mistake me for trans all the time. (tbh I don't really care) But I've also been told I should use it for voice overs/ radio hosting.
You're an amazing teacher and I use these techniques in my videos all the time, I grew up with all bros, and my mom is the most plain Jane ever(I still love her), and I was tomboy so being lady-like is kinda foreign to me lol, this really helps me with my delivery.

I'm an aspiring metal vocalist and have been trying to sing a Sun Killer by Spiritbox, which has a female singer. Using my normal vocals I was very flat and I couldn't figure it out, but using this video I learned new presentations of my voice which made my higher vocals more on key and my screams even deeper and heavier. Great video.

I'm a cis woman with a freakishly low creaky voice and this was also tremendously helpful to be as I try to feminize my voice more.

Ultimately if we want people to be comfortable with who they are and to do things like change their voice, not out of being pressured to, but out of a genuine want to try something new, then we should change our norms and start being more open-minded.
In a better world we wouldn't feel compelled to change harmless parts of ourselves because of societal pressures, no... In a better world there wouldn't be societal pressures for people to change harmless parts of themselves.

Zhea is seriously so helpful - augmenting voice is soooooo much easier with this technique, it really helps gain a lot of different possibilities for where you can go to build your voice, it's so nice!

When my kids were little, they used to ask me to use my "storytelling voice." I figured out what they meant, but I didn't know how to describe it otherwise. I think the key difference from my regular speaking voice was that it was lighter. Thank you for giving me the words!

Yes actually. For masculinity, increasing weight and lowering pitch is extremely key. Keep it comfortable and work it heavier without discomfort! For androgyny, whatever direction is the opposite of where you started would be great to work towards at first. Then work to cover less distance in that direction to find more a androgynous foundation. I really want to make a more detailed and nuanced video on androgyny soon. It's one of my favorite topics and has a lot of amazing options. It's so endless!!

@@TransVoiceLessons Ooh, in-depth examples of androgyny is exactly what I need; I feel like I'm overdoing it right now, but I've also just started so I expect everything to be extreme while I practice. The same happens when I learn new (to me) consonant articulations.

Not a trans, but as a 23 y/o black pan feminine male, this video will really help on improving and working on my female voice for over 8 years. I want to sound authentically feminine for voice acting purposes as I hated the way I sounded (lot of falsetto moments).
It will make myself liberating and put myself a good effort in training sessions! I hope you all, trans or not, be able to do it time to time! Baby steps.

I will say, as someone with a vocal music background, the section about weight was still very eye opening to me. I knew about various aspects and qualities of it, but never has it been put so succinctly and under one umbrella before. It reminds me of when my last voice teacher wanted to train me into becoming a counter tenor. While that's a lot of falsetto, and it's not quite the same ballpark, I still find the lessons translating pretty well.
This was super super interesting and helpful, thank you so much! I'm so glad I found this! I'm enby and I already thought about training my voice to be a bit higher for a while and since I have a singer background, I now can quite easily change my voice tone to have a little bit higher pitch and much less weight. With practice I should be able to establish this as a new normal quite quickly.

I honestly could never understand why I had such a hard time learning vocal feminization, and I even struggled with the exercizes in this video. I was about to click away when you mentioned vocal underdoer. I had no idea that something like that existed and it sounds just like me after I googled it. Transfem here because my egg broke, and I came out to a good friend of mine because I had thought deeply about my gender identity for the first time in my life. Confusing feeling and thoughts all started to make sense, and through tears said "I think I might be trans." She did her best to comfort me but ended up crying with me and just talked for hours. To call the experience an emotional rollercoaster wouldn't do it justice. In the end she said that she was happy that i trusted her so much and how proud she was of me. But I have conflicting feelings, I'm happy that I was able to come out, but I'm sad because I felt safer telling a girl I've never even met in person than my own mom.
For what it's worth, that's a pretty common experience (feeling safer talking to someone you're not super close with or don't know IRL rather than coming out to someone closer to you right away). Not only does it generally feel lower-stakes, but also the person we've more recently met knows a most recent version of us, without as much history, so it can feel easier to change and be our newest most authentic selves around them. I hope you've felt safe to talk to your mom since then, and if you haven't, that's okay too. Hope your journey is going well, sister!

when i was younger, i partially did this. i was around 13-14 and already had an unbelievably deep voice. somehow, by just consciously raising my pitch, i managed to get it to kind of stick, and it’s still around now
I've been trying to make my voice more feminine for about a year, but without any assistance. I could comfortably reach high pitches, but I had never intentionally experimented with weight. Right when I decide to crack down on it, I see this in my recommended. I can't put into words how much this has helped, and I haven't even started with resonance yet. Thank you so much for this!

wow, so after like, 5 years of not starting because I thought it would be literally impossible, this video showed me the answer in the first minute. Weight and Resonance make, like, 100% of the difference that I did not think to try.
I'm just a random not-trans dude but still found this unbelievably fascinating. Definitely using this for the various characters, and also to upset conservative Christians (and a lot of other beliefs as well, but mainly conservative Christians). It's a practically infinitely useful tool, definitely saving this and the whole "The Art of Voice Feminization Series" playlist.

Thank you so much! I'm a young trans actress and one of the things I feel most self conscious about is my inability to pass on stage, especially through my voice. When you're on stage, you don't get to tell people "my pronouns are she/her," they just see what they see and hear what they hear. With your channel (which my cis sister recommended to me, I have no clue how she found you before I did) I might be able to overcome some of those insecurities.

Definitely! A lot of people don't realize but this channel was initially created for me to document new discoveries and findings which is why it has taken on such a jargon heavy slant for a long time. When I started talking about voice feminization on the internet, the entire field was in a dismal state. Essentially nobody actually understood what resonance was or how it works. This channel was initially created to educate educators. However, over time the audience that has grown has been beginners seeking instruction rather than geeking out on cool stuff. This video is very much the beginning of a consistent bottom up series which will have a clear through line to help people directly. :)

This video is a godsend, as it gives actual examples of what one should be doing. The vocal weight parts were especially helpful for me, as the voice therapist I saw didn't even bring that up. Basically just told me to practice varying my pitch and intonation. Which was less than helpful.
No idea why youtube suggested this playlist, but this was an insanely interesting video to watch -- and also like, really really impressively educational. Cool video.
You should consider doing a 30/60 minute void lesson in general for voice acting, voice coaching for yt content creators, etc. This was super cool.
