Yeah King Aerys had a dream team of Knights. I believe that if they were fighting at the Trident & not protecting Princess Lyanna Stark at the Tower Joy the rebillion would have been over. I also believe they would have killed Ser Jamie & Lord Tywin Lannister Lord Eddard Stark when they would have returned from the Trident. Ser Jamie & Lord Eddard were great skilled fighters but against King Aerys they wouldn't have been successful, remember there's no Holland Reed stabbing any one in the back like he did Ser Author Dayne, ✌.

Maybe having Jaime freed from the KG wasn't an option at the time. Tywin only had so much leverage. I believe the options at the time were pardon Jaime and let him stay, or make him take the black. I don't remember but maybe the best deal Tywin could muster was to have Jaime pardoned to avoid the Wall. Someone can correct me but I believe the prospect of releasing a KG from his vows wasn't an option until Joffrey kicked Selmy loose.

    • @Ari33sa
      @Ari33sa Před 5 lety +6

I guess throwing him out of the kingsguard would also dishonor jaime ... There would really not be an excuse for why he'd be thrown from the kingsguard apart from murdering his king - meaning a dishonorable discharge ... while Tywin might not care about honor that much, it could serve to mock his house which he surely doesn't like ... that said I don't know either.
Then again it's not like Tywin back then was really in a position to make too many demands. He was scrambling to get on Roberts good side and get the marriage for cersei. Don't know if making another demand would have been justified despite not really having done much of the heavy liftig during the fight.

I mean we’re talking about a small, personal bodyguard unit that protects the King himself, supposedly made up of the greatest Knights in the whole kingdom. It makes no sense to never retire them. I mean it’s theoretically possible to have a 90 year old Kingsguard knight who’s long past his prime or not even capable as a realistic fighter. You’d think they would want to keep the most capable men in the Guard and therefore offer retirement and such to the members.

Hey there! So this was seriously one of my favorite videos by you so far, because i've been curious about the old and current members of the Kingsguard. I just wonder if you could actually make a video about Ser Duncan the Tall? I haven't read the books yet so I am not sure how much details there are about him, but considering in the series that Joffrey comments on how there are 4 pages (in the Book of Brothers) detailing Ser Duncan's deeds as Kingsguard, perhaps you could cover him? I only mention this because, I really admired Ser Barristan "The Bad Ass" Selmy through the series, and I believe "the Bold" & his sense of duty to the Kingsguard was inspired by "The Tall", based on the stories and his own encounter at the Winter Tourney.
Hopefully its possible, but otherwise, no worries!

I can't believe the show just decided to exclude Arys Oakheart and all 3 Kettleblack brothers from the whole show, all 4 of them play some pretty but roles in the books. Oakheart escorts Myrcella to Dorne and dies when he is caught with the sand snakes and a couple other knights trying to sneak Myrcella out of Dorne to start a war to replace Tommen with Myrcella, where Myrcella is wounded but doesn't die (and certainly isn't poisoned) like the show. The Kettleblacks play a huge role in scheming with Cercei to frame Maergery by telling the High Sparrow that she has been sleeping with multiple people, but they also help to imprison Cercei because the Sparrows are whipping the Kettleblack brother (not sure if it's Osney, Osmund, or Osfryd) when Cercei walks in and he tells the Sparrows that he had been fucking Cercei so that's how she is imprisoned. She is actually still in prison in the books, she never got freed and certainly didn't destroy the Sept, plus the Sparrows are still in power. I know there are dozens of changes, but seeing Oakheart reminded me of him and the Kettleblacks.

@@Sc4recrow44 Your about a century out regarding plate. You might be confusing 13th (1200's) century with 1300's (14th century)...
1200's - Beginning, everyone pretty much just wearing mail, sometimes would find arm and leg protection made of strips of metal. About half way through the century you started getting the "coat of plates" on top of mail. By the end of the century, most knights would be using this. Many characters can be seen wearing a coat of plates (or something like it) in the show, it's what the mountain wears.
1300's - well, about 1350 really, you started getting single piece breastplates, and either coat of plates covering the back or often just mail. Arms and legs gained more plate protection but were rarely fully enclosed (armour always focused on frontal protection first). Also in this century, the bascinet takes over all helmets for all knights (its the sugar-loaf shaped one, usually with a pointy visor). By the end of the century, you get the faulds, the metal skirt thing that really only works with a full, rigid breastplate and backplate. This is also when jousting took off, now people are well enough armoured not to regularly die whilst competing.
1400's - (early) covered more of the body in plate, getting rid of the gaps that use to just be mail, better articulated joints etc. Started seeing single-piece back plates as well as front plates.
1450 - This is where game of thrones is supposedly meant to be set (war of the roses, so 1455-1487). References to things like "lobstered steel" (presumably referring to segmented joints) and "gorgets" reinforce this. So same trends, better protected joints. Stronger/integrated neck protection. 2 new helmets: Armets pretty much exclusively for the knights and sallets for any one. Also more specialization, eg asymmetric armour for fighting from horseback.
In response to the OP, yes and no.
George RR Martin could have done with reading a few books on historical armour before writing a story full of it. The knights are usually alright in the books, the exception being his obsession with scaled armour, which is historically wrong.
The other armour he loves talking about is mail and (boiled?) leather, which again was never really that popular.
Given the descriptions of some of the armour being very complex, putting the period mid-15th century, I'm really surprised brigandines are never (to my knowledge) mentioned, though from the outside, they are covered in leather, so maybe that's what was meant?
Overall, I do tend to take his armour descriptions with a very large pinch of salt as I think it was Areys Oakheart in Dorne, was pierced by a crossbow bolt that went through his oak shield and then through a plate breastplate (and presumably layers of padding and possibly mail underneath)... Considering they were built to stop a couched lance, I highly doubt that.

[Lord Commander] Ser Garlan “The Gallant” Tyrell
    Ser Lyle "Strongboar" Crakehall
    Ser Garth “Greysteel” Hightower
    Greatjon Umber
    Ser Rolly Duckfield
    Ser Archibald Yronwood
    Ser Robar Royce
    Close contenders:
Brienne of Tarth - Split loyalties
Lothor Brune - Very capable knight with notable feats during the Battle of the Blackwater. Loses out to Ser Robar because Ser Lothor can be bought.
Ser Donnel Swann - Not loyal, having served Renly, Stannis and then Jofferey and Tommon.
Ser Balon Swann - Went along with Cersei's plot of plotting to murder Prince Trystane and blaming it on Tyrion. No integrity.
Ser Gerold "Darkstar" Dayne - Morally corrupt.
Ser Harras Harlaw - Strong Ironborn with a Valyrian Steel Sword but I highly doubt him beating many "Just above average knights". I don't see him surviving the immediate future.
Ser Lyn Corbray - Very skilled at arms with a Valyrian Steel Blade but can be bought *AND* is a pedophile.

I’d for sure want Arthur Dayne Jamie Lannister Barristan Selmy and Jon Snow and both the Clegane Brothers and Dario Naharis. I think the skill in this group is unmatched but maybe I’m wrong

I had never considered it was Petry who wanted Tyrion dead! And that was one thing that I racked my brain thinking about, but Petry makes a likely suspect

Robert should’ve expelled Jamie from the kingsguard. Maybe it wouldn’t have been enough to stop Tywins lust for power but you have a good excuse in that he killed the last king he was sworn to protect and Robert giving Tywin a secure line probably wouldve won him over as a more permanent ally

    • @tronalddump1133
      @tronalddump1133 Před 6 lety +6

I know right. It seems so inconsistent to me that Tywin didn't even try to have Jaime removed of the kingsguard so he could become his heir again (we all know he was really pissed about Jaime joining the kg). Cersei marrying Robert was more than enough to solidify the alliance between Baratheon and Lannister.

@@tronalddump1133 Yeah, what was even Tywin's heir strategy? Tyrion? Kevan? Lancel? They all seem pretty silly, right? Jaime was in tbe Kingsguard for years, maybe decades. Tywin should have had a strategy for that, right?

Josh Mcgeough The reason I love game of thrones is because of the lore. Learning about The history of the swords, the houses who owned them and how they came into possession of them are my favourite things about ASOIAF, and so the history of the kings guard is no different

Jonothor is of House Derry, the Derrys were fervent Targaryen loyalists, even into Robert's reign. Some argue the Derrys died out starting the War of the Five Kings.
