The problem with Robert's Kingsguard was both that Cersei filled it with her toadies, of course, but also most of the more elite White Cloaks died in the Rebellion, especially at the ToJ. So they were left with pretty slim pickings in terms of knights who would agree to give up women and land

@@thetalesofelbek7042 Robert has good with a hammer but not that smart so yes Cersei behind the scenes manipulated things . I mean there was so many westermen on the Kingsguard so there is only one explanation. Yes Robert was not a good monarch at all he could have spent his time ruling the realm instead of doing what he did but the lannisters didn't have to do what they did either

@@brandon_astris At least Robert was smart enough to let Jon Arryn do his job as Hand of the King but once he died everything went downhill though in all honesty Littlefinger had been scheming and sowing the seeds of corruption and chaos for quite a while.
It could be because most knights worthy of note were Targaryan Loyalists and couldn't be trusted to be the new kingsguard.

The main problem is that 5 of them got killed off in the same war and had to all be replaced at the same time. So a bunch of the best candidates from that generation just died and you have to pick more than usual from it. Clearly some bums are gonna make it in.
Also, Visenya would be rolling in her grave watching as Robert and Cersei picked a bunch of guys whose only notable feats were jousting in tourneys. Fancy lord games don't tell you a thing about how good a guy will be in a real fight.

I think Boros Blount would fall below Meryn Trant. The guy is literally so useless he ends up a food taster for Tommen.

Meryn Trant's reputation has suffered since the release of the show. He isn't a pedophile in the book and is stated to be a fairly decent fighter. The only major negative for him is that he laughed at Barristan when he was dismissed from the Kingsguard, and that's unforgivable.

Thanks for this video, I never really 'got' the Kings Guard, why they were considered so special, why they couldn't have families, etc. This really shines a light on it, and why what happened to Jaime 'the Kingslayer' is such a big deal
considering the king he slayed was literally known as the mad king, like I really didn't get why people who hated the mad king would mock the man who killed him.... this video really explained the reason and level of devotion the Kingsguard is suppose to have for their king. Many thanks.

Because the vows of the Kingsguard, like the vows of the Night's Watch, were taken seriously in Westeros. That's why even the people who wanted Aerys dead went nuts with Jaime killing him. It doesn't matter if Aerys deserved it (and gods know he did), but the fact that A KINGSGUARD did it, when he should be protecting the king. Kingsguard aren't made to be uwu protect the innocent and the weak uwu, they are made to protect the KING above all, even when that king is a scumbad like Aerys.

I don’t think the Kingsguard was formed before the small council. Depending on how you define the small council but he had a hand of the king, master of law, master of coin & master of ships during the conquest. The Kingsguard was established by Visenya because of a Dornish assassination attempt on Aegon after the Martells refused to kneel.
Yeah and the Targaryens on Dragonstone def had some sort of ruling council

Yeah and going back waaayy further too! Egypts Medjay, Romes Praetorian Guard, the Spartan 300 they called the hippeis and the popes Swiss guard just off the top of my head! There are loads more famous royal guards though

I have a doubt on this, cuz In TWOIAF audiobook it’s pronounced VELARYON and in ACOK audiobook it’s pronounced VALERYON (the way you said it in this video).
I personally think it’s meant to sound more like VELAryon, cuz Valeryon sounds too much like Valeryan (i.e: from Valyria)

Idk, a lot might be recency bias of the POVs (even Barristan is to young to remember more than one generation ahead personally). We only hear about the truly outstanding LCs of older times and outstanding stories like the brothers during the Dance basically. If all people that personally served under the White Bull or fought him (mostly mentioned by Ned, Jamie and Barristan) are dead, who'd really care about him? Without anything special happening in the near future involving the Tower of Joy, what's to tell about him? Fought some outlaws, got injured and was MIA when the royal army was crushed, the Prince killed and his and the king slain by a knight under his command. Same for Arthur Dayn, ALL Swords of the Morning are supposedly some of the best swordsmen of their age, yet we don't even know a single name, once more only Ned (and through him Bran if I'm not mistaken) and Barristan refer to him. Same deeds as for Gerold apply, except he actually took down a band of outlaws. They both weren't protecting the official remnants of the royal family or put up some heroic, or at least seen as such, last stand (as far as anybody apart from Howland Reet knows, and the dude isn't really talkative).
Don't get me wrong, I love those guys, but if we ask if they could become legends ~50 years after the current plot, I'd highly doubt it.

There's no evidence at all that any random Valyrian can't tame dragons.
There's literally no difference between a dragonlord and a normal valyrian.
The Velaryons weren't dragonlords because they had no dragons, couldn't buy one or something, simply as that.
Targaryen married to Velaryons to keep the Valyrian/Dragon binding blood, if they believed that there was a difference between Targaryens and Velaryons regarding Dragon blood they might as well marry any randon Andal, it would make no difference.

you said dark sister is larger than blackfyre. this is actually incorrect. blackfyre is a bastard sword and dark sister is a long sword. its definitely possible however that continuity surrounding this topic is not very reliable. george and the editors have let a few contradictions slip through so it wouldnt surprise me if this is one of them.
Man I love the kingsgard but I think it would have been pretty dope if each member were good in a different weapon, for example one would be godlike using a sword and another has to be godlike using a bow
