    Thank goodness for tow truck drivers! Especially the ones that pull truck drivers out of bad situations. In this video, we wrap up our Colorado Rockies, I-70 whiteout/blizzard adventure. This was a crazy situation, but we had a lot of fun!

      Tow Operator here, Nice to see at least someone appreciates us. Usually we're looked at as meth head criminals lowlifes. Little do people know, we must drug screen, can't be a felon to work along side law enforcement and obviously have to have good driving records for insurance purposes. We do what we do because we love what we do, it's damn sure not for the little money and no benefits we get. Most of us are also about standing behind our truckers and backing the blue.

      @@j.b.9895 That's not true. I drive for a FedEx Ground contractor domiciled in Hagerstown, MD. My contractor trusts the judgement of his drivers implicitly. If any of us say that we don't feel comfortable driving in certain conditions, we don't go. Period. No questions asked. Not to mention, I worked for FedEx Ground as a package handler before I got my CDL. I loaded those trailers for 2 1/2 years. I know from first-hand experience that there's nothing in any of those trailers that's so important it's worth someone's life.

    I remember all the I-70 like the palm of my hand, I ran as a dedicated team for fedex ground hauling doubles would pass through the Rockies around 3am 2x a week. Wish we had a cb radio, we didnt have microwave, refrigerator or TV. There I learned how to install tire chains. We always kept pushing thru slowly but surely except when closed down. Always keeping your momentum that's if no cars stopped. I look back and that was a scary but now fun experience. Coldest we hit was -10 degrees I now drive for a union company locally in California. Sure don't miss that episode of my life. Haven't had the chance to go back for the funner stuff and ski up in vail. A friend once told me the real professional truck drivers stay at home in winter. Part of that is true but only if they have experienced this before. For those of you still hauling thru there keep on trucking and be safe. Thanks for the video brought back good memories. I have yet to understand why danger and adrenaline rush is always missed if you are not there doing it...

    Wow, sooooo many things I could say to try and help here. Too late I know now but for in the future. Number one: The best way to avoid a gunfight is to not be in one! Same goes for a blizzard. After doing it once before myself, I never will drive into a blizzard ever again. It’s just not worth the aggravation and the risk. I will either wait it out or I will go a different route around it depending on the direction it is moving. I’m not concerned one bit about the load being on time. I’m concerned about going home to my family and making sure other people go home as well. It’s just not worth the risk. However, if you do find yourself in a situation like a blizzard or really bad snow I have some suggestions, Carry a shovel with a shorter handle. You can find them at Lowe’s, Home Depot, Walmart.
    I have been in situations where I pulled into a rest area to take a 30 minute break and got stuck on the ice where I had parked. No matter what I did I could not get out. So, the next time I went home I made some homemade traction devices using old pieces of mudflap and bolts. I wish I could show you a picture of it. As you know when you are stuck it’s damn near impossible to put chains on when your tires are just spinning. So what I did it’s made tire snowshoes. LOL pieces of mudflap with bolts through it to act as ice spikes attached to the tire using straps. Works like a charm. You cannot drive on them, they are only meant to get unstuck. I have other ideas I’m working on as well. After 21 years of driving and several bad winters I have learned to be an inventor LOL although I hope to never have to actually use them I have them when I need them. It’s part of my winterizing my truck routine. I could go on and on and on about being prepared for winter but I won’t or everybody. Just have to use your imagination and think ahead before you end up in a situation. Haven’t been me on that hill I more than likely would have been able to get to the top or at least out of the way until conditions improve. I am one of those people that will not drive in a dangerous situation if I absolutely don’t have to. And being on time for a delivery it’s not a good reason. I hope my ideas at least help somebody. Also for what it is worth, in the really cold weather always wear a face covering. Like an N 95 mask. You will be amazed how much easier it is to breathe and not have your lungs hurt from the cold air which can also be very dangerous. When it’s really cold out and I have to chain up you will see a mask, face. I’ve been doing it for years and it works great. No freezing cold face, no burning lips and no breathing in Frigid air. Try it next time you will be amazed. Be safe everybody. Great video Shelby!

    • @Chris_Lohmann
      @Chris_Lohmann Před 3 lety +1

      You should file a patent for those mudflap and bolt traction devices. I'd buy a set.

    • @truckindawg1
      @truckindawg1 Před 3 lety +2

      @@Chris_Lohmann lol well they aren’t pretty to look at but they sure do help! I still need to make two more of them so I’ll have 4 total. One for each dual.
      I’ll tell you how I made them. I find a mudflap that someone tore off their truck at a truck stop
      When they backed up against a curb. That way the mudflap is free and I don’t have to pay for it LOL. Then when I get home I cut them in half on the table saw and just bolt The two halves together using about 25 to 30 Bolts and large washers. The washers are to prevent the bolts from being tort out while power is given to the wheels. Then I used two ratchet straps for each one to attach it to the tire. One on one end and one on the other. They work! I should make a video of all the ways I like to be prepared. It would be a long video but informative for sure!
