June 1996 - Quebec City reacts to the Colorado Avalanche winning the Stanley Cup; Nordiques fans take to the streets to celebrate a championship that never was (CBC News with Peter Mansbridge)
Its a crime that the Nordiques left. Almost 30 years later and it is still upsetting. Quebec loved their team. Its insane that the NHL hasnt returned yet. Bring back the Quebec Nordiques.
Damn, that part at the end where the guy said "that's life". It's quite satisfying to see sports fans treat their team with that level of maturity. I really respect that.
I’m a Denver native and when The Avalanche moved here there was a buzz but some trepidation due to the old Colorado Rockies hockey team was a mess like the coyotes are now. We found out how good we were before Patrick Roy was traded. We were a good team before Roy after Roy we became a championship contender. I feel sorry for Quebec City Lost the Nords. I hope someday soon they will be able to get the Nordiques back. The old Montreal/Quebec rivalry was and still is good for Hockey.
and Ozolinsh and Lemieux, those tree trades bring em to that run and who would you choose for a cup run? Roy or a tandem of Fiset/Thibault ? i rest my case
Patrick Roy never gets traded to Quebec,if they had stayed there....he probably would've been a Red Wing or something-lol. Nordiques would've been good, but probably not a Cup winner. They should've brought the Cup there for a day though...even had a parade....like Bourque in Boston in 2001.
I remember the Eric Lindros story regarding Quebec. Lindros was supposed to be the second coming of Bobby Orr/Mario Lemieux prior to the draft in 1991. Lindros and his parents made it very clear to the Nordiques that he wouldn't play for them if they drafted him (as Quebec had the first pick in the draft that year). The draft was held in Buffalo, NY and when Quebec chose Lindros anyway he wouldn't put on their jersey (as the first-round players would do when a team drafted them). Quebec management kept trying to change Lindros' mind (including having Guy Lafleur talk to him to convince him to come) Lindros held firm and sat out a year. Ultimately Lindros was traded in a confusing manner to the Rangers but then ultimately to Philadelphia. The Nordiques got a huge number of draft picks for him which they used to construct a Stanley Cup-winning team (that blossomed once they moved to Denver).
I moved to Denver in 1995 so got there in time to watch them takeoff. Nordiques had some brutal years in the early 90’s but did great job in their drafts in Sakic, Owen Nolan (later traded for Ozolinsh) and the backbone of team in Deadmarsh and Adam Foote. And of course, Forsberg for Lindros. Always felt bad for Nordique fans.
Be sure to send a Christmas card every year to Gary Bettman and the Quebec City council who rejected the public funding of a new arena for the Nords having to move to Colorado.
@@DrLuke49 It was also the Canadian dollar value that hurt Quebec (and Winnipeg Jets too who moved to Arizona). NHL salaries are paid in US dollars and the Canadian dollar at that time was worth less than 80 cents to the US dollar which made it prohibitively impossible for a small market Canadian team to survive.
Many football fans in Cleveland probably share the same misery. After Art Modell moved his original Browns to Baltimore, that team won two Super Bowls. Cleveland did get the NEW Browns, but it could be a long time until that team wins a Super Bowl.
Indeed you are right. Or not lol... As crazy as it sounds, the gm of the habs, Savard, offered Roy for Lindros to the Nordiques in a deal that involved myiple other players. In the end, the Nordiques chose the Rangers and Philly mess and the trade never happened. This is coming from Pagé, coach of the Nordiques, in a very recent interview. Insane, I know, before that interview, I would've certainly wrote the OP comment.
Although , Mtl and Colorado had planned to swap Roy for Nolan straight up . It took a little time to iron it out and when Pierre Lacroix ( Roy's former agent) was about to pull the trigger , Savard had gotten fired. Two months later , new Habs GM. Rejean Houle ( who had no experience ) calls up Lacroix and tells him that he has a disgruntled superstar goalie. He's desperate,. Ohhh man - what a steal.
The Whalers moved to North Carolina in 1997......Karmanos had no plan whatsoever and just wanted to get out of Connecticut when the governor didn't bow to his demands
wouldn't trade Roy to Quebec ...I wasnt happy to see the fans of Quebec have to watch it but as a habs fan Roy would never be traded to the Nords...unless a 3 way lol
Patrick Roy was the final piece to the Cup puzzle….except NO WAY would’ve he have been traded to the Nords. So Quebec would not have won the 1996 Stanley Cup
For all of you saying they would not have won without Roy...maybe. However, when you see players come into their own like Forsberg and Sakic you sort of take pride in their accomplishments I'm sure...
I doubt they would of won the cup if they stayed in Quebec City. No way Montreal would of traded Patrick Roy there. Roy was what put them over the top.
“Might of been theirs” He obviously didn’t know much about hockey because the Av’s won because they acquired Roy from the Habs, had the Nords not moved there is no way in hell Montreal trades Roy to them, so the Nords fans and anyone else need to understand they wouldn’t have won the cup just because the Av’s did.
Savard said that prior to being fired, he had a trade for Roy with the Nordiques it was Nolan+Fiset+1rst round pick vs Roy+Keane so kinda could have been
When that trade happened Roy’s confidence was so shot he couldn’t stop a beach ball, and Thibeault was a rising young star. I could see the trade still happening.
Lot of comments of "they wouldn't have won in Quebec because Montreal traded them Roy." But in a weird way, they don't win UNLESS they started out in Quebec because if they'd been owned by anybody other than Marcel Aubut, Lindros just shows up and plays & the harvest of draft picks never arrives.
Sad to say but you're right, Dallas was a bigger TV market, no guarantee you would have been able to get those all-stars like Zubov, Hull, Belfour, Nieuwendyk, etc. if the team had stayed. And as people have mentioned, there's no way Montreal would have ever traded Roy to Quebec.
@@David-vp3eq …no way? There was a trade planned but the trigger want pulled so he may have gone there. No one knows for sure but after the Gretzky trade everyone should know that anything could happen at anytime.
@@David-vp3eq If the Nordiques had stayed in Quebec without prospects for a new arena and revenue sharing then they would most likely have needed to trade away various star players like the Expos did in order to remain financially viable, since they projected to start losing a lot of money if they had stayed past 1995. So even if Quebec got Roy we might no longer have Sakic, Forsberg and a few others to help Roy win the cup.
Theres no guarantee that the Nords wouldve won the CUp in 96... especially if they were in the Eastern Conference and mightve had to face Detroit in the Final... possibly Pitt mightve stopped the Nords in playoffs
I'm an Oilers fan and I believe the Nordiques got robbed I don't remember much of th early mid 90's but I know if the Nordiques stayed in Quebec your team would have won the Stanley Cup and im on your side Nordiques fans bring back the nordiques
There's no way they could've afford to keep all the guys like Sakic & Forsberg in the team in Quebec. Remember that there was no salary cap back then and team building was a lot more about the size of your wallet. I'd love to see Quebec City get their team back but it's very unlikely because the NHL doesn't really care about sold out arenas, they care about tv-viewership etc. and Quebec is a very small market.
Matt Lorentz the only way they got screwed was by the league. The league saw the popularity of the sport skyrocket especially after the rangers won the cup, so they figured let the good times roll and that allowed player salaries to start going out of control. Had the league listened to the economists they would have seen the disaster some clubs would become to the point they couldn’t survive. They instead didn’t and we had a lockout which killed the Nords, Jets and Whalers. The first lockout didn’t do much and we wound up having another that finally addressed the issues. Those three teams could have been saved had they done it right the first time, as of now we could have another lock out when this CBA expires next season.
psynque that isn’t true. The tv deals mainly pay player salaries, the teams count on ticket sales, mainly suites that corporations purchase before the season. That plus concessions and parking is what puts money in the pockets of the team and league. It’s the reason you have to have a viable arena in the NHL, you have to have a certain amount of seats and suites or it isn’t worth it to the league to give you a franchise.
Hopefully they finally get a team back soon, what with them having a new, state of the art arena all ready to go. Winnipeg got theirs rightfully returned to them, and surely Quebec must be next on the block when it's time for relocation, and/or expansion. Carolina, Florida, or Arizona should be who goes there if no new teams are added anytime soon also.
But..... wouldn't had ROY ya all know Habs Wouldn't trade him to their fierce rival so you don't know whatta would've happened if they stayed 1 more year - borrow time machine from michael j fox and see 😂

The best thing to happen the Nordiques was relocating
This Habs fan couldn't agree more!
I'm an Avs fan and seeing the Nordiques fans celebrating like that just made me tear up.
They'll get their team back. The Senators will be moving there.

Patrick Roy won them that cup! The Nordiques wouldn't have even smelled that Cup if it weren't for Roy, remember that folks.

The Avs would have won the cup with my granny as their goalkeeper that year.
Remember that.
@@CdeHavillandMosquitoNo they wouldn’t have. Roy was a crucial part to the early cup years
