One correction at 17:48: Quebec did not sign the Canadian Constitution. The Meech Lake Accord, which was an agreement to change the Constitution and recognize Quebec as a "distinct society," was never enacted. I was a Nordiques fan all my life, they broke my heart when they left. I just hope one day in my lifetime they return.
I hope they do also. Always pulling for you in the 80s and I was a pens fan. It was rough for us back then.
This is why we need hockey back in Quebec ASAP. The Remparts isn't going to cut it.
I'm an old 62 year old guy who remembers the Nords driving one of my younger(one year) brothers nuts. He's a Habs fan. I'm a Leafs' fan but used to marvel at the palpable hatred on display between these two teams. All the fights!! All the fights in the league back then!! I don't miss the fighting but do miss the atmosphere of it all,one that seemed more genuine than it does today.
In the early days of cable TV, we got the French version of Habs and Nords games in New England, was glorious!

@@SportsFan838 Idk man, I was just a child. Original cable, like original internet was kinda a free-for-all. It was the first time the television networks had competition, so these new cable companies must’ve figured that if they had all these channels, people would flock to them. It didn’t last, but for a young hockey fan, it was heaven. On top of the Bruins, I could watch the Canadians the Nordiques and the Rangers, so there was virtually a hockey game on every night.
Very good video, I was just old enough to watch the 1993 playoff live. Funny thing is Quebec city has a 19 000 nhl arena right now being sold out with minor hockey. While Arizona plays in an University rink with 4000 people
Which, unfortunately says more about the lack of competent ownership in Arizona than anything else because I have family that lives down there and trust me when I tell you there are hockey fans in Arizona, But with that being said, there is absolutely no good reason that there is not an NHL team in Quebec city
As the video states, there were some incredible playoff rivalries back in the day.
But, I say this all the time.....Montreal vs Quebec was the most intense, vicious hockey I ever watched. It was 'can't miss' hockey, even if you didn't cheer for either team.

I see fight at schools bacause of this rivality . Its a subject to not talk in Christmas becauses families are very devised. Sincerely its not comparable. But for the longer yes the rivality Boston vs Montreal are the second most intence rivality in the NHL history after Quebec vs Montreal. Thirst a say Edmonton vs Calgary.
@@quebecforce111 Mtl v Nords was too short to count. Habs-Bruins have been bitter rivals a lot longer than that, have faced each other 30 times in the playoffs, and it's been brutal. No way does a 10 yr rivalry even come close to this. Edm. v Cgy? Dude, Habs-Bruins are the biggest rivalry in N. American sports. 100 yrs of bitterness.

As much as I think Québec deserve a team. I'm not sure with today's social media how it would turn out. Families have been broken. Friendship lost. You can still feel it on sports page. Great times but sad times.

Great documentary. Brings back memories. I didn't realize that there were so much politics involved and how unfair it was for the Quebec franchise. I can feel the vitriol between these two teams return that I felt at the time as I watch again. Of course I am a Habs fan. GHG!!!

Old Boston guy, I played in the 60's,70's, and out all-star team would have exchange tournaments, we'd stay with Canadian families that treated us like gold, great people, until we step on the ice, a different city every year. Best hockey memories of my life. Thank you to all the families who took care of us. Love Canadian people, love hockey, but when we play the Habs anything goes.lol Oh Canada 🇨🇦🏒🇺🇸

I'm 47. It was awesome. A mix of drama, hatred and intensity. But you're right, the players nowadays are insanely talented.
Biggest fight I saw at a Nordiques/Habs game in Quebec City was in the stands. That rivalry was out of hand.

I was sitting at the junior ranks at Base Valcartier that night . The place was packed we were all watching the game on a projection TV. Some cheering for Montreal and some for Québec. I remember when the brawl started at the end of the period the same happened in the Junior ranks, fans of each teams were fighting, chairs were flying beers were spilled.......Things cooled down some after the players got off the ice. Soldiers apologizing to one another. Got some fresh beers and sat back down......Then It started again when the players got back on the ice, of course same thing happened at the ranks again. The MP`s had to called, some people were removed and the rest of us finished watching the game peacefully. Good times.
Great jersey ! ;) This rivalry was so fratricidal among us, especially during the 31th of December games and of course the series, that family members would stop to talk to each others for a while.

As a Habs fan through those battles, it was insane growing up in Quebec... That OT goal by Stastny in Game 7... I remember CRYING!! It was crazy!! NOTHING compares to this in today's hockey, that's for sure.

my father moved from montreal to quebec for work in 88 and i was in tears. i had to cheer for the nords. and the bad ones too. thank god we moved back to montreal in 91 and was able to cheer them to their last stanley cup in 93
As a habs fan, I don't know if it was because I was a kid or because of the rivalry but hockey has never been the same since the Nordiques left. We were circling our calender in advances for the games against Quebec. Half the people were for Quebec the other for Montreal. They used to play each year on new years eve (Or Christmas? One was against the Nordiques, the other against the Flames) and that created much dramas in families. In school, we were merciless. If you happen to wear the colors of a team in a class filled with opposing fans, you were taunted until you were crying. When I purchased hockey cards, I tore up and threw away every Nordiques players cards. Hated Hunter and Bergeron like they were the devil!

I remember watching the original 6 on Saturday nights, 8pm start in black and white. Only 3 channels. That is why we spent most of our time outside year round. Every school had a rink and the town also had outdoor rinks plus one arena. Great times, they were. Still spend as much time outside year round.

I remember reading that a few years back there was an Old-Timers (Alumni) Game between old Habs and Nords players and it was on TV in the province... 1 million viewers. Why the NHL is not in Quebec City is beyond my comprehension.

I loved 80s hockey. I loved the fact that you had a select few really good organizations. Only 6 teams won the Stanley Cup in a 23-year span from 1968-1991 Canadiens, Bruins, Flyers, Islanders, Oilers and Flames. Parity in sports is fine, but I loved having powerhouse organizations that battle each other for the Cup

My uncle's used to tell me stories about going to these games; That they would wear some of their hockey equipment under their jackets like shoulder/elbow pads expecting to get into a fight at some point in the night... Entertaining stories, but I won't deny my uncle's were fucking savages lol.
Now that is something we'd never see happen today, as players would probably have an entourage with their own security.

I usually hate non-traditional hockey sweaters and logos: but the Nordiques nailed it. Absolute top five uniforms and timeless. Quebec should have a team just for the fleurs alone!
My favorite Playoff rivalry is Pittsburgh vs Philadelphia.
As a lifelong Pens fan there is just something about when the black and gold get it on with the orange and black that just makes the hair on my neck stand up

This was really great. Well done dude. Quebecs last season my Rangers beat them in the playoffs in the strike year and if I’m not mistaken the Nordiques were the 1 seed.

When I played in the world pee-wee hockey tournament, our team went to a nordiques-jets game. It was hard to believe, when both city's lost their NHL franchise.
Being a Caps fan, I love the Pens-Caps rivalry. It's always been gritty and scruffy. Also loved the Canes-Caps stuff when they were in the old Southeast Division.

Thanks for that. Your last comment could use this fact: Since Bettman's first full year as commissioner of the NHL in 1993-1994, no Canadian team has won the Stanley Cup…in more than thirty years. As a comparison, between expansion from the original six in 1967 and 1992 meaning pre-Bettman, Canadian teams won 17 of 27 Stanley Cups. That's 63% of Stanley Cups were won by Canadian teams with expansion and without Bettman. A whole 0% have won with Bettman. Coincidence?
Excellent video Nick for one of the most intense rivalries in NHL history. Just a couple of add ons, the Parti Quebecois advocates Quebec's separation from Canada, they just dress it up in "sovereignty' terms in that they would keep the Canadian dollar and possibly 2 passports. Also yes there is a rift between Montreal and Quebec City in support for separation, the former has a huge recent immigrant community whose loyalty remains to Canada while the latter is made up mostly of those descendants of French Canadian settlers, starting in the 1600's until Quebec's fall to the British in 1759. The current day descendants are more likely to advocate for separation, add on the image of the 2 cities, Quebec City is referred to as the "old lady" as it is more subdued than wild, brash Montreal, finally I as many in Canada would love to see this rivalry come back, I have friends currently in Quebec City and their hatred of the Canadiens stems so hard, that to this day they refuse to support the Habs even though their Nordiques left for Denver 3 decades ago, keep up the great work.
Most fans in Québec sided with Boston rather than ever siding with Montréal.
I knew the rivalry being crazy, but not that crazy. 😂 Can't remember the year, but there was one regular season game, where the Nordiques were ahead by two goals. Montreal pulled the goalie and scored twice to tie it.

I watched the good friday game, it was isnane and I was insane, jumping on my couch and starting a brawl with my brother(he was a nordique's fan) where police had to come home to get us separated. That's how crazy it was back then.
Not only did the rivalry divide provinces, it even divided households!
Great video, I respect the notice for the names lol, Michelle Goulet cracked me up, hey even I've got some wrong over the years and I'm a legitimate NHL statistician. It's cool seeing how many future legends were on some of these teams. You see this and realize fuck, guys like Chris Chelios were playing in some of these series like wayyyy after this into the 2000s lmao. Guys like Dale Hunter, Guy Carbonneau were just babies into their career then! Quebec truly was the blocker to Montreal making more cup runs after their dynasty, regardless of if they'd have lost to the Islanders anyways.... we'll never know. I really wish Quebec would get a team back, not cause I'm a fan but, it would be great for hockey. That or Hamilton, Canada deserves another team but, we're at 32 now and that would cause the east to have 17 if Arizona moved.
P.S. The fact that Detroit and Colorado have 7 cups combined since the Roy beatdown and Montreal has 0 is WILD..... Its like the Red Sox curse of the Bambino. Even with Carey Price, they couldn't quite win it vs Tampa.
I've been sharing your channel with all of my friends. They constantly send me videos from channels that are about hockey, but don't know about its rich history, even 20 years ago. You, though, embody what every hockey fan yearns for: factual history with a little flair. Let's not think that the new game is the only game that has ever been played (acting as if 20 years ago was over 100). We get the goods on the game from way back when.
I remember these days, and I thank you for your time and effort to get as much right as you can from now. Surely things were more nuanced back then, but we live in the "here and now".

I was at the Forum for the Good Friday massacre game. I couldn't believe what I saw that night. I didn't see another game like this until the Canadian and Russian juniors brawl in Russia.
That brawl must've left an image of your mind that you'll never lose. Reminds me of the phrase, "I went to a fight, and a hockey game broke out."

As for the brutalness of it all, I was an italian kid raised in a french canadian neighborhood and school, so I fought most of my youth, it was nothing new for me. But, I saw younger fellows crying in the crowd all around me. You don't think about this when you're on the ice.

Some little factoids about some players from this video:
-Langway was part of a deal to help the Caps be relevant later in the 80s.
-Hunter was a thorn in everyone's side.
His GWG in OT against the Flyers was considered the franchise's top play.
That was until Ovi's insane goal in Arizona.
-Clint Malarchuk would be a Cap before his viscious on ice accident that nearly left him post-mortem.
The Nordiques are never coming back. And it’s no surprise why: too small, already consume hockey, players wouldn’t want to play there, etc.
Sucks for the people there but that’s the business of things.
Those playoffs changed the linesmen from just calling offsides to needing to be bouncer sized. The fights were brutal and the small linesmen just made matters worse

Probably why the two had such a bad relationship and Tremblay's own arrogance made Patrick Roy leave Montreal.
Many years ago I went to a Canadiens game on New Years Eve against the Nordiques, thought the boys would have an easy game, but these two really went at it, Mario Trembley and Marc Tardiff fought right in front of us, you can see the dislike in their eyes…Red Story was also at that game a few seats away from us, you are correct crazy times!🏒👌🍺

Even if Quebec came back, you’ll never get hockey like this again. People have forgotten. Hockey has never been a pure skill sport. It was always physical. And sometimes brutal. But man those guys were tough. Now…….
The teams wouldn't be as involved as back when it was 50% native (québécois) players the rivalry between Montréal and Québec has always existed and still lives on to this day in any aspect of society.
