Here is another one of my favorite grip-training exercises. Try to keep some air in your armpits (to avoid using compression on your leg for assistance).
I will do 3 sets of 45 seconds, and then one to failure. Once I can get to 60 seconds, I advance weight.
Hand size has a lot to do with it, so don’t get hung up on someone else’s weight. I have medium size hands and range from 25-30 pounds per hand.
Chalk is essential!

Why do you need grip strength ?
So you can grip stuff strongly
@@jeromevolckerpowell5080 🤣🤣🤣 great reply🤣🤣🤣
He’s gonna drop it on his toes. He should be wearing shoes.
Drop them on your toes to train for toe pain tolerance strength
do NOT take health advice off this person. he pushes very harmful medical products every chance he gets.
Careful with the feet
This is too complicated for me...
How to increase grip strength : carry heavy shit. Done. No video needed.
😐
Wear shoes, people... wear shoes. Lol
All we see is big head
Love you Peter! Changed my life
Much better to walk whilst doing this exercise and wear shoes.
I can do that with my toes
Really only need to do this if you have a desk job. For those of use who work with our hands we usually have amazing grip strength without even trying.
फडणवीस काहीही करणार नाहीत
What if this feels like I’m incurring tendonitis from this?
jesus christ you trying to lose a toe
I'm going to add this for my 87 year old client and for me! Thank you.
Me when my mom says carry the groceries in
Good one
Or you can go to a climbing gym
Waited until the end, to check if it was not a photo
Would you increase risk of hernia doing this?
For hypertrophy, it is important to grimace like a pissed off bald eagle 🦅
Great for your grip and your hands very bad for your feet if they slip. Lol 😂
Does Training grip strength accelerate the apparition of arthritis in finger bones?
He is just an amazing man!!❤
I'd love to see you do the farmers walk with your own bodyweight. I'm 107kg and there's no chance I'm carrying 50kg dumbells for 1min without shredding my hands to pieces
I do this every other day. I am a Jiu Jitsu practitioner and this has helped me a lot.
Great! But I probably need to wear boots
This to me is super interesting, as Okinawan Karate practitioners do an exercise similar to this with weighted vases. They do this with an an eye to increasing/improving grip strength as they move through kata.
Okinawa is a known blue zone
Reeve's deadlift 👌Recently discovered, use it as a row.
And I also like to suggest Lee Weiland work which is not static as this exercise
Tell me how your CMC joints feel when you get to be my age. Terrible advice.
Doing this exercise in bare feet will provide you with extra focus and determination.
can you also train grip strength by hanging from bar?
Wow! Riveting!!
This could've just been a photo lol
You need some active forearm exercises my man
Should the size of what I pick up be varied so different muscles are strengthen?
The key here is to not wear shoes, to truly motivate you to hold on for dear life! Love it!
Get those arms wider 😊
Can’t wait to do this. Thank you Dr. Attia😊
Wow I need to do this I’m 49 and it’s getting hard to open hard which is alarming 😳
Say nothing
This ruins my thumbs…
I heard him say that males are supposed to hold at least half their own weight in each hand for at least 2 minutes. This is the proof he couldn't do it even with those 10kg dumbells.
Loving your book and podcast! As a 45 year old amateur competitive Strongwoman, I am intensely interested in longevity and longevity in my sport. Masters athletes in the sport of Strongman might make great study material. Now back to making my Official Strongman Games qualifier video holding 260 lbs per hand for at least 5 seconds. 💪😊
Dr Peter is sharing with knowledgeable educated civilized people!
Not with some disrespectful ignorant bullies in high school who think they are funny!!!
Please do not drop those on your foot.
Ok, I'll say it...! This exercise is *dumb*. (1) The correlation between Alzheimer and grip strength is not causal. It's just an easy-to-measure biomarker. (2) This exercise is prone to injury, if you drop the weight. Just hold a dumbbell in the proper way, as to not risk injury, and your forearms will grow. For fingers, just squeeze a racquetball. (3) This is an isometric exercise (no movement), and as such, is the least effective type of exercise for muscle growth. Squeezing a rubber ball is far better.
Now start running with them😂💪🏼
Oh baby, that's gotta hurt.
How to test the bone strength of your feet- just go to failure on this exercise.
Can someone explain why grip strength is important? Yea I’ve read that it has a strong connection to longevity by why? We don’t need to use our hands to hold that many heavy things for long periods , we go to work, eat , clean , shower , where in our routines does heavy lifting with grip strength serve our longevity or confirm it ? Makes no sense
I just think it’s a marker to test your neurological drive. If your nervous system isn’t working up to standard, you won’t be able to contract the muscle as quickly or has hard. I guess a grip test is easier to test than a vertical jump test. Especially for the elderly. I could be off but that’s my understanding on what I’ve studied on aging and the nervous system and brain function.
nice move . . .. going to use that as my farmers carry . . . .
how to break your toes
Climbing is much more fun! 😙
I do this while doing step ups to maximize efficiency.
can i do it with BBs?
I’ve done this for a while. I hold them till I can’t no more, and they slip out of my hand. Very effective.
Thanks for the worst video ever. One sentence would be more informative than this.
Rock climbing is a much more enjoyable way to train grip strength.
Reminds of that grip strength training martial artists do w/jars.
Grip endurance not exactly strenght
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
A little commentary woulda been nice but I think we all get the picture lol
This is great! I also recommend Captains of Crush grippers
I love this guy he’s a beast! Such a brillant mind too
Walk-in’ yer talk, Doc!
Bro, just pull 440 deadlift and your grip would be okay
..and your toes. Pet may be able to do this. But you can visualize how this will end for most people.
If grip strength is a proxy and there’s an underlying confounding variable, is training grip strength not really effective? Like you could have insane grip strength by doing this but not be able to deadlift, squat, or pull-up if you never trained those moments.
How is this superior to just doing challenging deadlifts regularly?
Ok do the grocery shopping!
He’s looking trim these days.
Hopefully the pinky toes stay safe
This is way harder than it looks. He's using respectable weight... especially for someone who is not a construction worker. LOL.
Is there a different guide marker of grip strength for people with loose ligaments? For example: what if someone has Ahlers Danlos but good muscle and they literally can't grip without fingers bending backwards? Yet if holding a different way, COULD hold the weights? Thank you
Just now subscribed!
Please make sure you don't drop those and cause an injury.
Plate pinches smooth side out also fun
The terror of failing and dropping those on your feet.
I would do something dynamic while holding those. For example, you could do some lunges, squats, or hold one at a time and do suitcase carries. Get the grip workout while working other things as well
Remember to face your toe outwards 😂
I thought something went wrong with my speaker.
Shaolin
I agree that will help. I have pretty bad arthritis in my hands, particularly my last joint of my fingertips, what can I do about that?
Why is grip strength important? I know that it correlates with longevity, but does it cause longevity?
No. It is an effect, not a cause. Doing the kinds of work that lead to having high grip strength increase longevity. Such a narrowly focused exercise as this will only help longevity if you do a lot of other exercises while you are at it.
@@ArcoZakus That's why I'm wondering why he's advocating exercises that are so highly specific to grip-strength, as if it's casual.
@@chrisdriver7776 ,
Maybe if someone gets that impression and that gets the ball rolling for them to do other exercises it could be causal, in a round about way? Of course someone else might do the safety pin spring thingies, or squeeze a tennis ball, while sitting in a recliner watching TV and eating popcorn thinking their extending their lifespan. I think they will be disappointed in the end.
Use blocks without grips, better training for non beginners
I love this guy ! I've learned so much from him
Indeed! He’s sharing with people like yourself not with some ignorants sick disrespectful who are trying hard to be funny!
Incidentally the same way to find out how strong your toes are to haha.
I can't watch. Consult podiatry.
barefoot for extra motivation
I don't recommend holding weight by this type of grip.
I once tore a muscle in my forearm and it took many months to heal. A terrible injury.
GREAT IDEA DOC!!! ❤
Do biking without a helmet next peter! Then do sprint training while holding scissors.
Old Goju Ryu Karate Masters practice this technique with jars filled with water or sand.
Is it more the weight or the fact his fingers are spread out so far?
Grip strength
Grip strength translating to 180yr old lifespan.
Having high grip strength alone does not cause someone to live longer. Doing the kinds of work that result in high grip strength does. People who think their lifespan will be extended just by doing an exercise that strengthens only their grip will be in for a big disappointment.
Easiest instruction ever
Arnold... looming 😂
