In 'Deutschland 83', Martin Rauch is recruited as a spy for the East German GDR in order to try and obtain NATO's secret military plans in hopes of averting what the Soviet secret services believe to be an imminent nuclear strike. In this video, I set out to compare the series' events to those they may have been based upon in real history in order to give you the history that inspired the series!

As for Deutschland 83, I would love to hear your thoughts on it if you have seen it for yourself! It's definitely a series I can recommend and one that I rank among one of my favourite German series from recent times. I'm always on the lookout for new series to dig into for my videos though, so keep those suggestions coming!

Have not seen "Deutschland 83" since I don't own a TV nor Streaming Subscription. But after your review it is one my watchlist should it pop up on platforms like ARTE or SRF etc.
If you like German Movies you might like to watch/review "Goodbye Lenin" (2003) or "Das Experiment" (2001).
You could also do a video on the portrayal of german characters in current mainstream movies e.g. "Col. Hans Landa from Inglourious Basterds" versus "Dr. King Schultz from Django Unchained", which are total polar opposites although both have the same actor and same director.
EDIT: Oh my. A spy movie review on EAST Germany... how could I forgot to suggest "Das Leben der Anderen" (2006).

As an 80s born East-German. Let me tell you there is also "Westalgie" or West Nostalgia here. Even the last East-German knew the GDR is gone after the Hardships and Mass unemployment of the 90s. But some people in the West still think the Bonner Republic (West-Germany) exist and only toke East Germany over and act like little colonial masters. The Problem was mistrust, even though the East-Germans freed themselves the West Elite feared they all are hidden communist *Facepalm. Some BND Agents even thought some killings of the RAF (Leftist West-German Terrorist) of high officials in the 90s were revenge killings from Ex-Stasi Agents. So no real participation for eastern in the new Germany. And no symbolic end to both systems, for example voting on a common constitution like it even was stated in the West-German Constitutions in case of a Unification.

Deutschland '83 came out while we were living overseas in China--I'd never heard of it (access to Western media being heavily filtered), but we had a 'corner movie guy' who sold unlicensed but good quality DVDs of English/other language films and TV. I bought it on a whim, and i think i watched the entire series 3 times that year--the soundtrack is killer, the acting, writing, and direction are pristine and the cinematography is superb. Every frame is a painting practically, and every character is well-developed and interesting.

I was a little kid in the days of the DDR. The show is amazing. In the mid 80s I went on a school trip to Berlin. I'd look out the window from the train seeing the scary commies in uniform. When I saw a Russian soldier, it was novel a sight as if Vulcans landed. East Berlin is an experience I'll never forget. I was later bragging seeing real live Soviet military guys. Now I interact with Russians on a regular basis. Later in life, I fell in love with Russian language and culture.

Your final lines in this presentation are: "It's not communism, it's..." ...what? I listened five times, and I could not make out your words. Incidentally, I watched your video on "Babylon Berlin." Your review was excellent. Based on your recommendation, I am now watching the series (with subtitles!), which frankly is better than anything I've ever seen on Netflix or HBO. Thanks for the great work.

this war in Ukraine is clearly showing the shockingly poor efficacy of Russian (Soviet) weapons. had the cold war turned hot, would Warsaw pact have fared better against NATO armies than the world's no. 2 military - Russia - has against Ukraine's small army? i'm glad we never learned if Soviet nuclear forces were equally poor quality.
