The Black Legend: How Propaganda Shapes History
The Black Legend represents a long history of a negative Spanish image, purportedly made popular by Spain's greatest enemies at the time. As a result of this negative discourse, the Spanish have come to be known as some of the cruellest, tyrannical people of Europe, with the effects lasting even well into modern society and how Latin people are perceived this very day.
But how much of this is actually true? In the 20th century, scholars have begun to speak more and more of a White Legend instead; a discourse that portrays the Spanish as people who have been falsely accused of their many evil deeds, whereas they instead were some of the most progressive nations in terms of civil rights and miscegenation.
Which of the two is the correct version of Spain's history? Where did all this hatred come from, and was it justified? What are the modern day consequences? In this video, I seek to uncover the history behind all of these questions and many more.

Almost no one knows that in the 17th century the vast majority of slaves in the Caribbean and British possessions in North America were white and Catholic. Furthermore, white slaves were plentiful, cheap, and disposable, and tended to die easily. Black slaves, on the other hand, were considered hardy, strong, rare and expensive, and they were fed and treated better. During the 17th century, the English people deported hundreds of thousands of Irish people and, to a lesser extent, Scots people, to their plantations in the Caribbean and North America. The English called them "indentured servants", a euphemism not to clearly say that they were captured, their lands seized to grant them to the English people and they were deported to slavery in the new English colonies in America. The English, known for their meticulous documentation, hardly kept track of what they did in Ireland. Much data is missing, but Irish, American, Caribbean and Scottish historians have been putting the pieces of the puzzle back together. The first documented case occurred in a colony in Guiana, in the Amazon, in 1612: the first sale of Irish slaves. A proclamation from the English king stated in 1625 that Irish political prisoners would be sold as forced labor to the plantations of the Eastern Isles. In 1632 it is known that the vast majority of slaves on the English Caribbean islands of Montserrat and Antigua were Irish. A 1637 census shows that 7 out of every 10 inhabitants of Montserrat were Irish slaves. By now, demand was high, and slaves died quickly. Political prisoners (rebels to English rule) were not enough: any common crime (petty theft, etc...) was an excuse to deport Irish people to the plantations. There were also gangs of kidnappers who roamed the countryside, catching anyone and selling them to traffickers without anyone asking much. Black slaves in the British Caribbean had to be bought. Irish slaves, on the other hand, arrived almost as gifts from the State to the plantations. In 1641 another Irish revolt broke out, the War of Confederation, which was put down in 1649 by the new English leader, the puritan and authoritarian Cromwell, who was fiercely anti-Catholic (for example, he tried to eliminate Christmas from the calendar and the popular celebration in the British Isles; he even banned Christmas cakes). From 1641 to 1652, during this revolt and in its immediate years, the population of Ireland fell from 1,466,000 inhabitants to just 616,000. Approximately 550,000 Irish were eliminated physically or by induced starvation. Another 300,000 were deported as slaves. The deportation of men left women and children defenseless... and they too could be bought and deported in subsequent waves. From 1650 to 1660 Cromwell's so-called “Reign of Terror” developed, who actively wanted to eliminate the Irish and Catholic population of the island. In 1650, 25,000 Irish slaves arrived on the Caribbean plantations of Saint Kitt. It is estimated that in this decade the Crown and its administrators kidnapped one hundred thousand Irish children between the ages of 10 and 14 and took them to the plantations of the new world: the Caribbean, Virginia and New England. In this decade alone, more Irish slaves arrived in the New World than the total free Anglo-Saxon population living there. In 1651, Cromwell won two wars against Holland to ensure that he could have a monopoly on the slave trade and in 1655 he conquered Jamaica from the Spanish to turn it into his great slave base in the Caribbean. But he did not neglect the rest of the plantations. In 1652 he sent another 12,000 Irish slaves to Barbados. It must be taken into account that Cromwell financed his wars in Ireland simply by promising land to the English lords who came there to fight. In those lands there was an excess of peasant population: the lords preferred to dedicate them to pastures. A rule from 1657 stated that all inhabitants of County Clare must move within six months or be arrested for “high treason” and sent to the Americas. In this era it was not a crime for any Englishman to kill an Irishman... but they preferred to catch them alive and sell them. Sometimes kidnapping gangs went too far and chose the wrong victims. In 1659 a petition arrived in London from 72 slaves in Barbados who claimed to be Englishmen illegally kidnapped and trapped there. The same petition claimed that on American plantations there were 7,000 or 8,000 Scots taken prisoners in the Battle of Worcester in 1651 and even 200 French, kidnapped and sold, each in exchange for 900 pounds of cotton. There are further figures recorded from Cromwell's final days: 52,000 Irish women, girls and youth were sold in Barbados and Virginia in 1657. A thousand more boys and girls from Ireland were sold in Jamaica in 1656. Cromwell died in 1660, but his successor Charles II, son of the beheaded Charles I, did not hesitate to maintain the trafficking business, with the commitment to deliver at least 3,000 slaves annually to the “Royal Company of Adventurers” (actually, a slave selling company). Originally, the concept of “indentured servants” had a fairly well-defined definition and perhaps many Irish people used it before 1620. In that first phase, the individual voluntarily agreed to go to America and paid the passage, maintenance and a piece of land in the colonies working in the destination place a series of hours a day for a few years. This agreement could be in writing. However, from 1625 the Irish were simply kidnapped, sold and put to work as slaves: it was a massive new lucrative business. Although English propaganda continued to call these slaves “indentured servants,” since 1625 it was always mere trafficking in human beings and forced slavery. During this century an Irish slave cost the equivalent of £5, while a black slave cost between 4 and 10 times more. Plantation owners had little interest in keeping Irish slaves alive. Colonel William Brayne asked in 1656 for more black slaves to come to the plantations because “since the owners will have to pay more for them, they will have more interest in keeping them alive, something they lack in [the case of Irish slaves]. ”. The blacks lasted longer in the Caribbean climate and were also pagans, something that the English owners preferred to the Irish, who were hated papists. Furthermore, in theory a black man served for life, while an Irishman had to be freed in 7 or 10 years... but this did not happen often, since most died earlier. For religious purposes, Irish Catholics were not considered Christians and had no right to religious assistance (nor did free Catholics in England). Many did not know the English language, and spoke only Gaelic. But others were literate There is much more history but my story would be much longer...

Many historians have argued that even if most German men - and, according to some, Hitler himself - were not truly anti-Semitic, but anticommunist like all "good" people of the time, that would not absolve them of guilt. Indeed, many non-Jewish Russian people were targeted for slaughter precisely because they were Russian and/or communist. Anticommunism, anti-Semitism, and anti-Slavic racism clearly bled together and became indistinguishable.

Babylon Berlin's first two seasons costing 40 million euros makes total sense: they have a lush, film-esque cinematographic language, the costumery and even the extras are all uniquely interesting/engaging (as would be subjects in a painted portrait), and it boldly reveals the truly glamorous and filthy extremes of the era's lifestyles. Babylon Berlin nails that whole vibrant/bright-with-grainy-shadows, Moulin-Rouge-y aesthetic... with class and style to spare.

I bought it on a whim, and i think i watched the entire series 3 times that year--the soundtrack is killer, the acting, writing, and direction are pristine and the cinematography is superb. Every frame is a painting practically, and every character is well-developed and interesting.

Incredible how you passed from going against the black legend to defend it. The black legend is propaganda, the pink legend is part of the new arms of the black legend, basically what you call pink legend has 500 years ago and was called golden legend (leyenda dorada), the first people rejecting this golden legend were the same spaniards, we don't support golden/pink legends, going against the black legend is not defending a new lie, or a pink/golden legend, here is your mistake. You call the defense of the truth with our documents, archeology, data, books, primary sources (that the black legend doesn't have btw) "defending a pink legend" or "spanish nationalism", and you choose Franco's regime as a example of this, comparing what we do today to the franquist propaganda, let me tell you that attitude is disgusting to say the less. The same hispanistas (hispanics and people that attacks the black legend) are going to go against that same speech or ways of studying the history in the Franco's times. You try to put us at the same level here to disqualify the defense of the spanish history morally and intelectually. It's completely wrong what you do. And let me tell you that the creation and defense of the black legend has A LOT to do with the creation of several nationalisms inside Europe and the creation of more than one country, BUT that doesn't mean that the defense of our nation, the creation of our country has something to do with the creation of "a pink legend", and even the natiolisms of Spain has nothing to do with this neither (nationalism is not patriotism, there are differences btw, your putting both in the same box here, that people has respect for their culture, ancestors, legacy, etc has nothing to do with nationalism, in the case of Germany, Holland, England and even the US, it does a lot to do with it because they've based the history of their lands in black legends, Spain didn't need to do that, neither Portugal, neither Italy, or Greece... for what i know). I will explain this with examples so you see it better, Elisabeth daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn NEED the nationalism, the black legend and the new protestantism to govern, because otherwise she was a bastard (the union of Henry VIII and Ann wasn't legitimate to the catholics and the Pope), and a bastard couldn't be a queen, to eliminate the opposition she promotes black legends and protestantism, eliminating the power of catholicsbritish people in her own land. Spain didn't need to do this, their govern were legitimate in our land. Another example, Orange in Holland went against his legitimate king (with excuses like saying he's just going against his ministers), and used and promoted protestantism and black legends going against the same people of Holland who respected the legitimate power. Spain didn't need to do this, the emperor receive that land as inheritance of their parents, his position was legitimate, and there were more people from Holland fighting in the side of the "spaniards" than in the Orange's one (supported by France and England, at this moment enemies of Spain), that was a civil war inside the Netherlands, that there are still people who believe that was a war between Holland and Spain answer to their nationalism and black legends, not the reality. A similar thing happends with Germany. All the powers that wanted to go against the Pope and the catholic power used to promote black legends and antihispanic narratives. Spain never did such a thing, Spain was catholic and respected the separation between the religious power and the crown, our country is created uniting different kingdoms legitimaly through marriage. Basically we can find differences between the way the british conquered America and Spain's conquest for example, you can not say both colonized or something like that, not just because of the different meanings of the word in english and in spanish but because there are clear differences in the treatment of the natives, the history of England is not the history of Spain, or the one of Persia, or Russia or any other, you have to analize each history individually with its own context, meanings and sources (not just with the ones of their enemies or a eurocentric perspective based in the anglo-french-germanic vision, specially when we talk about other continents) and in the same way you can not think that the nationalism of England, Germany or Holland and their connections with their history and the creation of their modern nations and mindset, has something to do with the ones of Spain, this is ridiculous, and it's what you defend at the end of the video, you put us all at the same level, but is there such a thing as a huge black legend of England? Or Germany? Or Holland? Does such a thing exist? No, is such a nonexisting thing promoted even intellectually in the most politically correct and international levels? In the media the whole world consume? The answer for all those questions is NO, then how can you put us at the same level? The spaniards have being step on for hundreds of years, they have been very misstreated by the main modern powers of the world, and in the moment they try to say hey, this is not ok, you dare to say that they're just behaving like the others, that they promotes lies too, nationalisms, etc (this reminds me to China, because they did the same to them to eliminate their self-steem and a possible thread to the main powers) as if they couldn't even rise their gaze from the floor for a moment and think that maybe they're not the same crap that others have being their whole life calling them. This is pure racism (and not just because the main problem of the spaniards at the beggining of the black legend was "having semitic or african blood" in the eyes of Europe), and what promotes is more racism and division (this is easy to observe in America, the hispanic one or the anglo one, check the conference given in the Adams State University, The black legend and the hispanic history: Then and Now by Nick Saenz in 2014, and how the black legend make people kill each other in the US). This antihispanic narrative poison even the creators of videos that try to be objective (because they don't study the hispanic history, and less with hispanic sources) and even the ones of the majority of the foreign "hispanistas" (those conferences about Spain's history in England where they promotes black legends saying to defend the history of Spain as hispanistas... believe me, the hispanic world and the real hispanistas laugh of all of them, we can not take them seriously) because their sources in their countries usually are full of black legend. It's like trying to study the spanish inquisition not with hispanic studies or visiting the Archivos de la Inquisición (the Inquisition's Archives in Spain), no, instead of that you read a book made in England or Germany about how awful it was and full of black legend, what do you think you're going to learn then? The spanish history? No, just the same propaganda that is repeated everywhere, and like it's so repeated it will give you the idea that it's the reality. This happends the whole time with spanish history, when you start to study the history for real with their sources, it goes so much against the black legend, and it would look so "good" in opposition of what the world say about hispanics (the whole world study black legends, even the same spaniards inside the education system of Spain), that it would look like a fantasy to the eyes of the ignorant of Spain's history, and you would think "this can not be truth, it has to be nationalism, pink legends...etc).😂 this is why i recommend to learn about the black legend first and its consequences today, and later to study Spain's history, so you don't go with that preconceived idea or prejudice. Btw, the white legend is something not about Spain, but about England, the white legend was a creation of a king of Spain to defend England (yes, this happened, ironically), to whitewash their society in times when Spain and England signed a peace treaty and England used to massacrate the catholic people of their own land and these people used to run away to France and Spain to not be killed, the king of Spain after signing the treaty didn't want his people to continue seeing England as enemies, and they say something like noo, they don't kill catholics anymore, don't see them like that, but that was a lie.

even though how realistic it may look, characters here a lot of them are fictional such as Nyssen family and their company (Probably inspired from the company Thyssen AG) and ofc untill season 4 is where Nazi are more in common

I was always puzzled by the relationship between the far right and the Occult in pre-war Germany. I could see why certain personality types might be attracted to that milieu. But it didn't click for me until I read the works of SD chief, Walter Schellenberg and the British double-agent, Kim Philby, not weeks apart. Essentially they said the same thing - the Occult is the perfect operational cover for people involved in highly sensitive covert activities as it serves as a lightning rod for people's perceptions and prejudices and draws their attention away from what is really taking place. The actions of occultists are expected to be suspicious and therefore no further investigation is necessary. Genius.

The Black Legend is still strong here in the Philippines, no thanks to Rizal, Bonifacio and the WASP's.

    Music is from the 1960s.

This was well done. I did wonder if the Black Legend persists in the modern US with the immigration debates?

Sorry for the late comment but I finally got around to watching this series. I had seen your review/essay before and was intrigued by the series but never watched it until it was recommended to me on Prime Video. I definitely have some thoughts to share… For starters I overall really enjoyed it. And as an American viewer seeing this other side to WW2 was truly a difference to American media. It was far darker and really made me question a lot about war itself. The action, cinematography, and actors were all fantastic. But I did have quite a few problems with the story. For starters I think it would have been better to more appropriately and accurately portray the Holocaust. At first I thought it was over exaggerated how much of it was ignored until I finished the series. We constantly hear about it but aside from a few occasions we never see it. It’s always on screen or in our characters minds but never shown. I think it would have been far more intriguing for Viktor to be seen in a camp. We know he was in one but it’s never shown. Or have Greta use her influence to save Jews instead of sleeping with a German officer. For it being in Nazi Germany it rarely feels like Nazi Germany. This could be because I’m use to American ww2 media but this series could have been so much better if it were longer and truly pulled no punches in the subject it was trying to tell. Let us see how awful the eastern front is. Let us see the concentration camps and our characters reactions, let us experience the horror and reality instead of being told about it.

Your strong accent just makes me giggle. I am german, too, but you sound like the villain in any american movie. LOL But yes, it's an amazing series, and soldiers are soldiers. German. French. Japanese. American.... All the same. Some are good, some are bad, some believe in the cause, others don't. Some hate the enemy, others understand them. Some want to fight and do, others don#t want to fight but are forced. On all sides. I remember how Hemingway was harshly critizised for his WW1 book A Farewell to Arms because italian soldiers picked officers from an officially retreating army and executed them. Italians were with the allies in that war.

This miniseries is not about Germany being a victim. It is 100% an anti-war miniseries, and does not glorify nazism at all. It shows a common, typical gang of youth friends, who all face the consequences of growing up - against their will - in a country controlled by a dictator. If you think otherwise, you haven‘t understood the narrative of this masterpiece.

"clean wehrmacht" is only a joke, the main purpose of this theory is only to cover up the majority of Germans. Wehrmach is simply as dirty as SS, the ordinary Germans are not better in any sense.

I could see that Friedhelm hated himself for what he was doing. I think the motivation behind it could be the father seeing his sun as weak.

Germany was, and wasn't, a victim of WW2. The Treaty of Versailles made German economic recovery impossible. It also made a Hitler inevitable. The SS, and shock troops, were psychopaths and yet most of the rank and file were conscripted kids. Forced into a madman's dreams of conquest.

The character change of the young boy was the only difficulty I found in this amazing series. I feel the lack of cruelty committed by the German soldiers was much needed to balance out the ridiculous amount of propaganda by the allied world after WW2.

The Black Legend will prevail for decades if not centuries to come, because it serves Protestant, anglo-dutch and Latin American narratives that need villains to depict their ancestors as victims or heroes of resistance. In Spain we are not even allowed to say that this story is one-sided without being shouted down as imperialists.
