Buttermilk Recipe: Place 1 TBS vinegar or lemon juice into a liquid measuring cup. Pour milk into cup up to the 1 cup line. Stir and let rest for 5 minutes.

This has to be one of my most favorite comfort foods ever! How did you know I was at Cracker Barrel a couple of days ago? 😋
This is the southern way of making dumplings and pretty much how my family has always made them.
My mom always made such wonderful chicken and dumplings and I tried for years to make them the same way but sadly failed for the longest time. Then some time after she passed, mine came out just like hers used to. My sister even commented that they tasted just like mom's. It was another great gift left by my mom and I make them now as a tribute to her. 💕

I use pie shells for my dumplings. Thaw pie shell. Place on floured spot and cut. Separate and dredge in flour. Add to boiling broth.Quick and easy. Yum.😊❤

Loved this since I was little . I like to add Pioneer brand white gravy mix to the broth . Adds a lot of flavor and makes the broth almost a gravy like Cracker Barrel. 🙏
I’ve been making chicken and dumplings for years. Used to make my own broth. I use canned biscuits because my mother did. Sometime I add carrots and celery. And I make it in the crockpot. At my age I’m all about quick and easy. I’m sure this is superb like all your recipes! Thanks for showing different ways to make wonderful meals and deserts!
I wish my Dad was here for me to make this for him. This was his favorite dish at Cracker Barrel. We always took him out for Father’s Day on Saturday since this was when it was on the menu.

I always get the dehydrated buttermilk. I found it when I lived in Austin. So glad they have it here in the Upper Mid-West!

My mom would add chopped celery and carrots, takes it over the top. Sometimes we use drop dumplings, and sometimes canned biscuits.

Thanks. 1-2 or more sticks of butter would have suited my taste though. Old German grandma would always complain that the old chickens never had enough fat so she always added more. We boys would fight over flat dumplings the next day because they were even better! She made 3-4 batches just to keep us happy. You brought her back and. Now I have to make them.

Mine would include finely diced celery when you added the onion, and a thicker roux (or as you called it, slurry) because I like a thicker, white broth.
But, otherwise, add a side of cornbread & butter and big glass of iced tea and we are in for a great meal. 👍

I've always enjoyed everything I've eaten at Cracker Barrel, but I've never tried their chicken n dumplings, which I'm sure would not disappoint.
I've always been confused about what quantity of chicken broth/water to use when cooking c&d. You see my mom and all the cooks in my family never measured anything. They just knew how much to use and I guess I'm just not a natural in the kitchen. Also, I always added some celery with the onion and seasonings you mentioned. However, I always followed my mother's suit after she thickened the c&d with a flour roux she would would then thin the broth back out to the consistency she'd want it with evaporated canned milk. I have to admit, those dumplings may have put on more pounds, but mom made the best chicken 'n dumplings I have ever eaten anywhere!!! With this method some ppl's dumplings will tend to stick together. Trick in getting them NOT to stick together as taught to me by my Aunt Jackie who made the 2nd best c&d is to add a little bit of butter when your cooking c&d - maybe a pat or two.

In Pennsylvania this dish is often referred to as slippery pot pie. The chicken can be replaced with beef or ham. Growing up in Massachusetts, this is what our chicken and dumplings looked like. Instead of buttermilk, I use broth. Delicious!
I love this recipe my favorite and I do mine just about the way you do yours my daughter fixes my food and breaks down I eat one time a day cuz my drum is gets in the way of me trying to my son asked me out some cooking Meals on Wheels though not going to complain about it because it's it helps me

Catherine!!! You ABSOLUTELY nailed this recipe!!! I am going to make this all year round!!! If my husband had his way, he would have it every night!! This was DELICIOUS!!! My aunt Elsie ( who made the best homemade noodles) would go crazy over this recipe!! I have to tell you a funny story about my aunt!! Whenever she would make chicken and dumplings, the whole extended family would go over to her house and we would devour it up but you had better hurry and eat because when Aunt Elsie was ready to wash the dishes, you had better have finished!!! LOL I can remember my cousin Bobby still had some left in his bowl and he had turned around to talk to my dad, he still had his fork in his hand, and when he turned back around, he stabbed the table and his bowl was gone!!! LOL And he said " Hey! Where'd my chicken and dumplings go??? And everyone just burst out laughing!! You talk!! You lose!!! LOL ( He, later, got a bowl to take home with) I hope you don't mind these crazy stories, but I have such wonderful memories that's related to food!!! Thanks so much for what you do!! Where did you get those adorable glass canisters? I want those for my flour, sugar, etc! Boy! I'm rambling!! Can't wait to make more of your yummy recipes! Toodles!
