That's sad. I've thought I may not seek treatment if I found out I was really sick. I'd like to be able to leave my daughter something and not spend it all on healthcare.
They will try and get Medicaid to cover it if she is approved. If not they will send her a reduced out of pocket bill (or bills) which she can either pay a few dollars a month or not pay it at all. They will turn her into collections but it's not supposed to affect credit. I assume though if the bills are extremely expensive they could seek legal action but not sure...may be best to pay a few dollars per month in that case. Also ask for itemized bills. Oh no, that's some old myth it will definitely affect your credit. Firstly, I'm so sorry to hear of your family's troubles. Secondly, I was born with an increasingly debilitating chronic illness and have experienced differing periods of financial stability with both private and public insurance such as Medicaid, Medicare, etc., which included medical debt. When unpaid hospital bills are inevitably sent to collections, it's reflected by your credit score since each collection account shows up on your credit report as a derogatory mark and is treated as such. After confirming that the debt actually belongs to you (sometimes they get it wrong) you can decide how to handle it (dispute, settle, etc.). Don't panic and make any rushed choices. And don't feel bad for incurring the debt. This isn't 20k of credit card bills from a tropical island vacation you couldn't really afford or too many Amazon shopping sprees. This is surviving long enough to even go on that overpriced trip. Ironically, I'm entering another period of struggle after clearing my old debt; I'm so disappointed and IDK if I can handle all the nonsense again.
