Correct. It's also where the saying "pot luck" comes from... Whether you got fresh chunks of veg and scraps of meat, or something that had been in the pot for a month / got burnt! 😂 Going in hand with that is also "the upper crust" (rich/noble folk) as the peasants got the burnt bottom crusts / trenchers (with a bit of broth soaked in if they're lucky) thrown to them after a feast.
Yeah basically just keep a pottage going on the fire all the time, adding in what you had. Peas also used to be so much more important, no potatoes and wheat harvests failed so much more often. They didn't waste a thing.

When I witnessed my great aunt stirring a goat stew in 1 pot and a vat of rice and beans in another with a branch over basically 2 camp fires, this food then went and fed like 40 people.... I realized how far we'd come and how soft I was lol
Times were very different but equally demanding. Today we send our kids to school for 6 to 8 hours a day. While our kids are in school, most of us are working jobs (unrelated to housework), then we come home to feed those kids - we have maybe 30- 60 minutes to cook before we have to help kids with their homework while we pay bills. We might get an hour of family time in before bath and bedtime routines. So… don’t be hard on yourself, you are doing just fine!

Literally every moment of the day (at least for the class represented here) was concerned with acquiring, preserving, or preparing food for the family. Even having so many kids was part of that: more hands to get more done (and don't give me anything about them not having birth control, because they did; it just didn't look the same). A good crock pot recipe is rough to beat, pressure cooking can save time and doesn't have to be watched and stirred endlessly, learning to make double and freeze one is a wonder, and zapping leftovers, as well as repurposing them so that they are disguised and feel like a freshly cooked meal is fabulous... yes I am looking at you cook a roast or sheetpan of veggies & use all week. Short cuts for the win.

If you don't like having to cook every night learn to batch cook. You can freeze fully prepared meals. When you don't feel like cooking you have back up. I watched videos on CZcams on how to batch cook and it was a game changer.

I feel you. I am so sick of it. Day after day going to work, do the planning and shopping and then cook dinner at a convenient time. But it is my problem because I do not like, what my husband makes when he is in charge ( no veggies, oily and mostly prefabricated), so he leaves it to me. My kids are 21, 20 and 16.
Freezer crock pot meals saved my life and sanity honestly, and it’s only one hand dish to wash 😂 I find joy in plopping the raw ingredients in with no care whatsoever and then coming back at the end of the day to a hot meal. Now I only actually cook like two days out of the week.
