I see from the comments below that a lot of people do not know the history of the "Nightwatch" mission. The Nightwatch mission was initiated in the early 1960s (I think 1963) along with the "Looking Glass" mission. The original aircraft was the EC-135J. The first E-4A, which just had the mission equipment from the EC-135J installed, was delivered in Dec 1974 as an E-4A and then two more E-4As were delivered. The first E-4B was delivered by Boeing and the three E-4As were converted to the E-4B configuration (a massive change).
I live in Iowa and I have seen all four planes driving past Offutt. Here is something they don’t tell us, my dad was in the Air Force and he learned each one of those has a nuclear ballistic mislead on it.

I see them frequently flying out of Offutt also the E6-b, which really flys the looking glass mission. Offutt just got their own E4-b flight simulator in 2022, so they can reduce training costs. The old but effective mostly analog technology will do everything it needs to do, but is heavy so, it burns alot of fuel.

HAVING BEEN RESPONSIBLE TO HELP CARTER ORDER TWO MORE NIGHT WATCHES IN JAN 1978, And then years later learn on my first day at Boeing 18 yrs later, seeing the drawing of the E4A In a drawing use learning class was VERY IRONIC... I laughed as I ID the drawing.. my instructor thinking he had a loony in class, maybe! What I can tell you is that their research here at Nat Geo or explanation of somethings is very wrong. THE TRAILING ANTENNA is "cut" for frequency transmission to our submarines and other ships due to the very low frequencies used to COMMUNICATE wt them. You are familiar with ABLS (NAME CHANGED NOW) USED IN HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER OR THE ALABAMA SUB MOVIE to recv msgs under water, etc ...THE ANTENNA LENGTH on the plane is actually a mile long not 5 miles long...5,280 feet not 26,400 ft long... The ships antennas are totally different ..no I can't elaborate. The secrets are not the plane, but what the software and equipment can do to order our forces to protect the U.S. and our allies, on the plane. . 7 older & smaller 707 planes used as command and control to control our forces from the air is our ground command back ups, is not very efficient. The 747 combined 3 to four airplane personnel to gather to make Comd structure more effective: 1 plane instead of 7! ...it wasn't till the late 70's that the Russians had almost the same BEAR FORCES group capability, but because all their radios are based on TUBES, their planes are heavier and don't fly or as long in the air, and you can only eat so much Russian borscht and it tastes terrible if transferred in a fuel tube! HA!. EMP (ELECTRO MAGNETIC PULSE Can take out equipment, what we would love to do to BOOM BOX CARS NEXT TO US!) The equipment can be perminately damaged. Good IDEA TO HAVE A late model 1960's car that doesn't have electronic ignitions to operate your cars Bo computers or other radios will work if not placed inside and isolated in Farraday Cages! (Look it up!) The Russians barely got their planes' equipment right in their airplanes...We are still superior over them last I know?...I was active duty in SAC UNDERGROUND Comd Post 45 yrs ago and learned 40+ years ago of "stories" Of Russian Screw-ups. Can't say tho because even today, I'm still under gag on certain "actions" then. I EVENTUALLY, wt Rank increase, was sent UPSTAIRS to SACCA:, STRATEGIC AIR COMMD COMMUNICATIONS AREA World Wide Communications Job Control, which was upstairs in the main Bldg 500. We gathered Communications equipment command outages or maintence reports for HQ, and the Comnd Post Comm Officers "down stairs", and instructing those job controls at all bases and Airports with NATL Guard commands and radio ILS systems that affected our force movements and readiness with operation changes and other fix actions & directions. GOT a kick out of my command structure Rank of Capt. while a NCO! 4weeks before I mustard out of Air Force, the E4 at Offutt, had a Comm PROBLEM happen. It was to give Carter a RIDE the next morning to show it's best foot fwd!. I USED MY radio matainence skills to help fix the problem and because their was no fix action plan written, my temp plan that night was implemented as standard plan for any future outages till months after I was gone. As the Shift Supervisor of 7, I came up wt fix action and got the plane to WASH DC. for CARTER'S ride and his signature on a new bill to order the last two Night Watch Built and the approvals to up-grade all 4 to the E4B satellite Ant. Big BUMP on the plane. A LETTER OF COMMENDATION by my Brig General and an Atta-boy from 4Star General, SAC Comdr In Chief Gen Ellis, came to me the next afterrnoon! MY 2nd Signed General Letter of Commendation. I was thrilled at the doors I got to go through ...and some also closed to let me go to others jobs in my life .. so yeah that's life. CHECK out my bio for my background in radio/TV, telephone, and other electronics, besides Boeing.

All Permanent secure military communications goes through only a few points on the ground, however if you have a strong enough transmitter to cut through the interference that would be in the atmosphere following many large nuclear blasts you could communicate directly to each strategic point(if they are still there) if you had the right equipment, with NAOC does and so do brigade level mobile command units, the purpose of this plane is to be able to maintain communications channels if the permanent ground based communications systems were destroyed. These planes are not the only option as the navy operates ships that have the same capability, look up navy command and control vessels, and as already stated the army has land mobile versions as well

$223M! ROTFLMAO. I was a flight crewmember (FE) on this plane for 13 years. To replace a B747-200B aircraft with this capability was quoted as $1.2B and that was in the late 80s and early 90s.

Yep a tiny sliver of your taxes are going to protect the people who will help the country rebuild after a disaster. Most of your taxes are going to programs that either A. Help the poor(or more often freeloaders) B. Programs like Medicare and Medicaid that make healthcare super expensive for everyone or C. Retirement programs like social security that are a Ponzi scheme, that won't pay out but would be able to help retieies if privatized.

there is nothing outdated about the plane, just because there are so many gauges and switched doesnt mean its outdated, in simple words compare a needle-gauge style speedometre in your car to a glass speedometre like you see in an audi r8 or a tesla.
The older tech isn’t sensitive to an EMP. If you look on the flight deck you’ll seethe center console is old school steam gauge just in case an EMP takes out the high tech electronics.
