      A common way is to use a preheater underneith and a hot air station above. That limits the total amount of direct heat on the IC. For me, I simply use a hotplate that I dial in around 150c and then use 300c above via the hot air gun. But...any slow preheat of the PCB should suffice.

      @@standartblitz6798 I mean, you can order preballed memory ICs off of sites like Aliexpress and Taobao and then get someone to do it or you. But otherwise yes, there's no way around reballing.

    • @bluethumbdiy4735
      @bluethumbdiy4735 Před 2 lety

      @@standartblitz6798 Are you talking about the memory itself of the GPU core? If memory, it can be reballed and/or replaced with new (I recommend the latter). The GPU core, if you mean the onboard memory controller, has to be removed and reballed or replaced with a working one. Reballing is very difficult on the core itself as there is both the chip and the carrier, which are hard to separate.

    I have a gtx 1050 TI which shows bad a0 memory module . I've replaced module with a working one but yet shows bad module (MATS) . I've got 1.5v feeding rams (all of them) tested caps and resistors surrounding modules buy I've found nothing , I've reballed GPU but same , I'm thinking that I have either a bad GPU (memory controller) or bad trace somewhere . What should I do? (Was trying to trace every ram module trace to GPU, comparing good bank with bad bank)

    Awesome! This video has given me hope that my video card can be repaired. I have the exact same Sapphire Pulse RX580 8GB with the exact same artifacts as described in this video.
    I can also indicate that I could not secure my video card firmly enough in the PCI slot. I transported my system cabinet quite often. After some time I got stripes on the screen that disappeared when I moved the video card a bit. But that became increasingly difficult to get rid of the artifacts, as they appeared more often, stayed and my PC also froze. In the end, just like in your video, two bars were constantly showing across the screen.
    I do live in Suriname, South-America, where I haven't found a repair technician who has experience fixing graphic cards. I just requested a quote on your website, and I hope you also accept equipment from abroad for repair. If unfortunately you don't, this is my SOS to everyone who reads this. Thanks in advance for any response.

      A sagging gpu or loose gpu on the pcie slot will eventually damage the traces under the vram modules by bending the pcb. Notice in the video that A channel is close to the pcie connection. A usual failure for many heavy cards hanging on the pcie

    • @FabianRistie
      @FabianRistie Před 2 lety

      @@HGL-iq4qg Thank you for your response HGL2020. If only I had known this sooner, I could have prevented my GPU (which immediately increased in price) from being destroyed by placing and transporting my system case upright instead of horizontal.
      Unfortunately I have not (yet) been able to ship my GPU (by FedEx, UPS , nor DHL) from Suriname to @Tech Cemetery in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, United States. Hopefully it will still work, but if it doesn't work, I would like to know which of you sells an online DIY course so that I can interest someone here in buying it and offering the service here in Suriname? Do you have some simillar case to mine? and hint me whats its wrong?
    I have RX 590 , that have some issues on booting - when i get to desktop it sometimes get artefacting small rainbow squares in a rectangular line.
    Sometimes its look like the driver wont load/fails to load and monitor start to trying recorver the driver monitor goes black and try to start up.
    or last few times monitor was just black/no signal detected.
    The best part this only happen at first cold boot when my pc was excluded from the slat when i have this kind of issues its just need a restart or shunting down.
    As sometime after a restart there still some issues like videos goes glitching - breaking the frame or showing green screen corruption etc.
    I change drivers, try diffrent cable , and diffrent hdmi port , not much of help.
    Now i change monitor (sadly its not perfers more like a downgrade) from hdmi to old dvi and hoping it wasnt show any issues.
    As it happen random like 1 boot in a month or something. Oh and yes if its boot its boot i can play heavy , modern games and nothing happens.
    And i never get card over 65C so i dont burn anything i can know.

    I remember a long time ago I had a card that worked fine except that in games it would often stretch certain textures into infinity. I always felt that something in the VRAM was corrupted and that it was feeding corrupted values for UVW coordinates of the 3d models (or perhaps the vertices themselves) into to the core which then drew the assets incorrectly on the screen as a result. Not sure if this is true, I guess a bad core could also do this but then again the card was otherwise fully functional and never crashed, it just stretched those textures like crazy in every 3d game (no artifacts in Windows itself). Was definitely interesting. I believe it was a 7900GT.

      Most of the time there are just narrow stripes on the screen. This indicates there is just a data line disconnected. It's getting harder to find older mosfets but easy to find what should be newer equivalents, short of the newer ones having better ratings such as higher current and lower resistance. Can I simply "upgrade" the mosfet or am I asking for trouble. Specifically, I want to replace NTMFS4C08N with NTMFS4C024N. Both or ONSemi and do the same thing....

    Dude, you're just awesome! Great video as i have the exact same issue on RX580. Now there is a thing, in case there is no short, do we have to replace both chips on the same channel?

    • @autodiag7044
      @autodiag7044 Před 2 lety

      Ok, i clearly got issue with channel A RAMs, but how to be sure that it's the chips and not some regulator?

    • @kakkoishonen
      @kakkoishonen Před 2 lety

      @@autodiag7044 same question. I have 2 RX 580's with the same issue and the weird thing is it's always the channel A!
      I've tried to replace the 2 modules with another pair of modules (the same brand but a bit different) and the GPU doesn't work anymore.
      Fans don't even spin. So I wonder if there's another possible issue.
      Another tech on youtube told me that it might be a defective memory controller inside the GPU itself.
      So I don't really know right know.

    • @autodiag7044
      @autodiag7044 Před 2 lety

      @@kakkoishonen I think that it's mem controller inside core. Now there is an option to edit BIOS to mask Channel A so the GPU will work with 3 channels instead of 4 (6GB instead of 8GB). It can be done on NVIDIA GPUs, i've found a tutorial. It can be adapted to AMD, it needs more research.

    I have an ASUS Strix RX580 8gb and the same problem as yours.
    My question is: can I use a different ram for the replacement parts?
    'cuz I have a dead rx580 with a Samsung K4G80325FB-HC28 but the Asus Strix ram is K4G80325FC-HC25.
    What I know about the differences between those 2 rams is only the speed. 7gbps for the HC25 and 8gbps for the HC28.

  • @accurian148
    @accurian148 Před 2 lety

    Hey im thinking if it's pulling so much current that the memory is overheating so how rest of the memory is still working but artifacting when you turn it on? I mean the voltage should be dropped so low that rest of the memory wouldn't be able to turn on

    • @trouble_maker023
      @trouble_maker023 Před 2 lety +1

      Could be due to it being at 150-300MHz. After it tries loading drivers, it jumps crashing the system.

    • @nightfury3619
      @nightfury3619 Před 2 lety +1

      The VRM can handle a theoretical 30A. The shorted memory chip was only drawing 4A. Possibly 10A if 1.55v was used for testing. Plenty of headroom there.

      So depends on how shorted it is then. Just remembered i had RX 560 with shorted memory but i can't turn it on because no voltage present. I guess it's shorted really badly that it won't even turn on

I've installed it on my system and I cannot even get an output, although it is detected correctly as a secondary gpu in Windows safe mode. I keep getting 'thread stuck in device driver' error.... anyone have any ideas please? Many thanks

      HBM cards typically die because of the interposer they use. The interposer is the substrate that connects the GPU to the memory itself.

    Woah I just had this exact problem on the RX 580 in my main PC happening 1 week ago, also channel A corruption (Found out with the help of some amazing people, but good to see the information here as well!).
    Currently waiting for the parts to arrive from china.
    Already have a hot air station, a GDDR5 stencil and solder paste if needed (Memory module should come with solder balls pre-attached), will be my first BGA replacement.
    Exciting!
    Thanks for the helpful information!

      I'm doing the same. Just ordered stencil, leaded solder balls (45 mm is the correct size fyi), and new GDDR5 memory. The new memory will come balled already. GDDR5 VRAM is so cheap now...just makes more sense to buy new. I bought 13x 1GB ICs for $35 shipped. Consider a hotplate for preheat before attempting to remove/replace VRAM ICs

      @@cmd8086 It really depends on what you're trying to desolder and what is around it. But in short, I tend to keep my temps just under leaded solder melting temps, which is ~180c. Unless you have really good equipment and a accurate temperature probe...it's a rough in number. My equipment is just marginal so I have to use a temp scanner and a lot of guess work.

Vertical artifacted, because i dont have any spare of memory, so i just reflow it all of the memory also the chip with rework station for 5 minutes at 400 celcius (15 seconds for each memory module and 5 minutes for the chip) the artifact was gone. And untill now still works to play some hard games. And i ever saw on chinese youtube, they were use a program called TSERVER to knew the faulty of the memory (just like nvidia mats mods on nvidia card). And when i asked about how to got it, they didnt answer..
