- The lorica hamata is a type of mail armour used by roman soldiers.
It was issued to both primary legionary and secondary auxilia troops and was mostly made out of bronze or iron. It comprised alternating rows of closed washer-like rings punched from iron sheets and rows of riveted rings made from drawn wire that ran horizontally, for a very flexible, reliable and strong armour.
There were several versions of this type of armour, specialized for different military duties such as skirmishers, cavalry and spearmen. Up to 30,000 rings would have gone into one lorica hamata, and the estimated production time was two months.
Although labor-intensive to manufacture, it is thought that, with good maintenance, the armour could be used for several decades.
Over its lifetime, lorica hamata remained in constant use by legionaries and centurions, who favored its greater coverage and lower maintenance. Constant friction kept the rings of the lorica hamata free of rust, unlike the lorica segmentata, which needed constant maintenance to prevent corrosion.
Lorica hamata remained common for both legionaries and auxiliaries. Later versions had sleeves and covered the legs to the knees.

it looks absolutely stunning and glorious! Fit for a true Roman!
coughromansstoleitcough
yeah cause that's what conquerors do
relaxxxx, it was just for fun m8
I know I know
This armor is brought to you by the Capitoline Brotherhood of Millers! The Brotherhood uses only the finest flour: true Roman bread for true Romans.
I really love the aesthetic of the extra shoulder/collar pieces of the Lorica Hamata. I wonder why later mail armor designs lacked this. I believe the extra reinforcement was because those were the places you would most likely get hit over your shield.
Mail coifs usually provided this sort of double protection :)
The theme song of this channel is sooo good like when he was showing off the armor it made it so epic!
Good ol Dark Souls. Least the first song.
Oh that armor is sexy as hell
I absolutely love that Hamata! Now I have another culture to think about when later considering reenactment!
Metatron. Great demonstration. I have been studying the Roman army for many years. I have never seen real proper arms and armour up close, just in books. I worked in precision metal work for 20 years. I get to enjoy both in this video. Looking forward to the rest of your kit. Thanks
Very nice looking, looks nicer than medieval mail armour.
Sono davvero contento di vedere uno youtuber italiano avere cosí tanto successo internazionale, il tuo inglese é perfetto e ci fa orgoglio (in Italia sono davvero poche le persone che lo parlano decentemente).
Continua cosí! :]
Love that you know the language and so much of the history!! KEEP TEACHING!!
That armor is so badass on him!
when i saw the video, i just smiled with passion. proud that we all got here.
Your passion about the topics (even the pasta videos ) and of course my interest in them is what made me quickly become a fan of this channel. Keep it up and best of luck! From a modern day Carthagenian.
*Wears butted mail, tries cutting through, commits seppuku*
Butted mail made of steel is still steel, it does not depend of cuts, it depends on hard strike to break open
I would like to state, that while I like the look of the Segmentata, I can respect the amount of hours that went into the Hamata after working on chainmail myself. The Hamata is also riveted it looks like..so...yeah...good smith.
This lorica really looks great. I can't wait to see the segmentata you ordered.
I was watching your videos Raff since the day you were making reviews and wearing times of cheap replicas. Now I see you publishing every day great content and showing amazing suits if armour. Am truly happy to see you came this far and I thank you for all the amazing videos you made pal :)
175k subscribers barrier smashed, congrats!
Very awesome!! Things are looking great.
Metatron, great vid. I enjoy your channel immensely.
Some content suggestions for consideration:
Armor, Weapons, History of
Byzantine Era, Carthage, Gaul, Parthia, Greek (classical and later).
And more.
You have probably already had these suggested to you or maybe you already have vids on one or more of these that I've missed.
Thank you for your time and effort you put in to your channel.
Congrats it looks awesome!
Great video and looking forward to the future ones. Also thank you to the Noble One that donated this to Metatron. Brings us more content. Hope you all have a great weekend!
Looking awesome bro!
wow im speechless .. looks awesome my friend !!!
You are now a true Roman.
Not until he's had a shit in a ditch in full panoply.
hahaha true
Until then he's just a pleb.
Looks really well made.
First of all, "ave Metatron!" for his commitment in ancient military history and the very interesting channel.
Lorica segmentata was introduced soon after the battle of Carrhae, when a Roman army, equipped with lorica hamata, was annihilated by Persian arrows. Many tests have been done comparing effectiveness of the two armours against arrows, with lorica segmentata resulting in most cases superior. However, a good felt or wooden vest under the lorica hamata is sufficient in most cases to stop arrows, without going for the more complex and expensive segmentata.
I agree (for what it counts) with Metatron on the consideration that Romans used armours as long as they were usable (i.e. old armours were not replaced at once) and also equipment was adapted to the campaigns, so that it was probably quite common to see even in the same unit some imperial legionnaires wearing the lorica hamata and others the lorica segmentata.
As for lightness, I have some doubts. Steel in Roman times was of poorer quality (and heavier per sq. cm) as compared with Middle Age, so that riveted mail armours could have been quite heavy.
Absolutely gorgeous mail armor, and the Imperial Gallic G is eye candy.
what a beast! Can't wait to see the other ones.
I really like this channel :)
I have a hamata, and I completely agree with your assessment. When you get your subarmalis made, however, it wouldn't hurt to still have some extra padding at the shoulders in addition to padding the torso. I've worn the hamata for long periods throughout a day, and an equivalent padding of 4 layers of wool felt works keeps the shoulders from getting sore. I will be making my subarmalis out of quilted linen, with the extra wool padding at the top. It's important that you have garments underneath that breathe, because your hamata looks like mine, which has 6mm rings, and it doesn't breath as well as you might think. It's very easy to dehydrate, unless you plan on conditioning yourself to wool (I assume your tunic is wool, forgive me if I'm wrong). Trust me, I've had it happen to me, and the results aren't pretty.
Great review! I've been excited for your reaction to when you finally got a Hamata, and I look forward to seeing more!
Hakuna Matata
Awesome video.
Goodness, it's beautiful!
Music is glorious
That looks badass!
great armor
i can not wait for the full set
My god that looks so badass, it really looks fantastic. You certainly seem pleased with it.
1:26 Pure 100% Hunk
The armor looks great.
Oh my god, thats awasome!!!
wow!!! you got 175K subscribers. mr popular. ;-)
keep up the good work. I swear when I first started looking at your channel you only had somewhere round the 30k - 40k mark.
Best channel ever
• The geometric baffle in the background and the presence of the armor is extremely Roman. Very pleasing. Keep that background always. It's neutral and elegant, yet modest and profound. Very symbolic to me. • A very Roman choice.
lovely Video
Love it!
I love how a large portion of the double layered area is on the back. Invincible while running away lol.
much more quiet for sure this one for ''stealthy'' approaches and to receive orders ;) . wish you to enjoy it in full and we will wait for the complete set.
a good one Raff ! :)
I think it would be interesting if you got the full marching kit of a legionary and camped with it.
My favorite Amour in this world would be riveted mail armour! I also like the Lorica Hamata very much, its just crazy that some generous man/lady just gave you that.
Looks A-MAZING
Nice piece of armor.
That armor is nice... really nice.
I'm jelly of that armor mate. May it serve you well.
Can't wait to hear your thoughts when it's thoroughly tested.
Very nice.
I love your videos
Huzzah! For that new armor smell!
legit question: is the upper helmet broken (the thing that seems to used for hang the helmet) or actually like that for certain mechanism?
I noticed, too. It Seems broken.
Croz Raven yeah It is broken, it happened when he was sparring with his friend, he mentioned it in past videos :P
Augusto Campo Oh I see, I thought the helmet also new.
in ancient roman times, this guy would be considered a vastly wealthy warlord.
That is a good looking Armour
Amazing... I would like to see meta in a Greek linothorax.. similar to the armor used by Alexander the great.
Looks like quality mail.
That looks fun to wear
good video
Gods above, that brooch on the front is so very pretty.
From cow memes to roman facts.
I love your channel Metatron!
Lorica segmentata is my brothers favorite armor too.
soo nice :3
you look good in it mate 🙋
The armor looks fantastic! I'm glad you were able to get it.
I have a question though, what differences were there between Roman armor and Carthaginian armor?
The salt content.
@@rollochairbreaker230 ?
@@mrtrollnator123 the Romans salted Carthage's fields. (Supposedly anyway)
good for you metatron a new addition
more to come i hope
good looking
you should totally do a modern army obstacle course in that armor :D
If I remember correctly, it is lighter because the romans managed to get the rings smaller and therefore using less material for the same density of the mail. It looks absolutely great!
But how did you manage to break the forehead guard on your helmet?
I'm hyped for the new samurai armor
Love your new armour! Hey, as a next topic, since I couldn't find anything on your channel about that so far, could you perhaps talk about ancient Egyptian warfare and weapons, and how they were used? I'm particularly interested in opinions on how soldiers fought with their khopesh from about 2500 BC until 1300 BC, since I'll be ordering a custom steel replica of a khopesh found in Tutankhamun's tomb, around the end of this year.
damn mate, you look badass in that!
Finally it is here
Would you kindly talk about the Persian Cataptracts that are said to pre-date Medieval Knights even before common era?
Looks great! I can't wait to see the full set. How did you break your helmet?
Polishing it too much.
I think he mentioned in a past video it was damaged when he was sparring with a friend.
you should go on a date in it, you look fantastic!
It looks great. Can you maybe give more details about who is maker of lorica? thanks
Awesome suit of armor! I want a suit myself of chainmail to wear for protection but they are way to expensive on my budget. I did have a question which I shall ask now, whether or not of it's historical acuratness I was wondering about how effective do you think an gambeson reinforced with what could be called 'splints or scales' in a loose brigandine style (by loose I mean a slightly seperated to provide a flexible coverage of the body in small plates) and on top of it wearing a suit of Mail. Everyone I hear talk about mail says that blunt force trauma is really the weakness of mail, so I was thinking that perhaps that gambeson idea could provide some rigidity while maintaining flexibility.
I did have to lauch when he talked about trying to cut himself and showed him tapping the sword against the mail.
But looking at what was showing with the shield it looks like primarily the double layered bit. Though it does make me think why they didn't do a cobbination armour with a hamata shirt, but then shoulders of segmentata to protect more against downwards blows over the top of the shield.
Love to see late era full Roman armor
You look like you have a fair bit of padding around the mid section ;) no hate great video and looking to future ones!!
cool armor Metatron.
Greetings from the proud provice of the Roman Empire, Hispania. In the north west there is even a province called León (from Legión) because it was founded by the Legio VI Victrix. Legio IX Hispania was one of the best legions for decades.
Hey Metatron what's the name of the music you play it in your intro and at 1:00 when you show off the armour.
:) lovely
Please, take your time, but someday make a video in which you hike, set up camp, pack up again and resume marching on the next day. You should have some interesting 2-days hiking trails in which to do this around Palermo. :)
First impression video: "Eh, it's okay. Probably not worth the money. Least it wasn't me that paid!"
(I'm kidding of course, this was just my first impression upon seeing the title)
Having watched the first little bit, I've gotta say, the armour looks great!
Metatron, when you finally get around to doing your tests in your armors please do so with full marching kit this time. You know, scutum on the back(?), helmet across your chest, pilum(s) and the that stick they used to hold their gear on your shoulder. You should also do some light engineering work in your armor, see how it's like to dig, saw and hammer wood since (I believe) that the Legionnaire was expected to do all engineering work in full armor.
for those of us that either wear mail in public, secretly of course, there's also padded armor meant for dirt biking or American football that one could wear underneath. Depending on which one you use, it could be a lot less sweaty.
hi Metatron and the nopel ones. can I ask you please to talk about the areb armour or sword or any thing about them
I remember in a previous video you were talking about how armor should be tailored to the individual, and if you are larger you should lose some weight to be more in line with reenactment. Well, speaking of being in line with reenactment, when are you are to shave and cut that beautiful head of hair on you? Love your new lorica hamate, definitely looks well made and historically accurate.
10 points for the Yhorm the giant theme
Metatron you should do a video about the not so famous lorica squamata(+1 if you agree). Amazing video btw
Metatron why dont you do a review
on an Italian mre
Your view of the correct armor for women is reflected in the armor worn by Jeanné de Arc's Paris statue. You may have mentioned that as I recall in your original post addressing this, but unfortunately, I could not locate it.
Always thought the hooks would be under the shoulder-flaps, at least that is what Connolly made me believe.
