    Great video. I run a small agency and the stress is very real. Coordinating the team and making sure everyone delivers as expected can also be a pain. No freelancer will ever take the work as seriously as the owner. So don't pursue this model if you can't constantly supervise or afford to pay someone to supervise for you (like a project or operations manager).

      For now I need to start agency anyway, because I need to register my team, and try to search some projects for them.
      I had upwork account it's almost 6 years, and skipped that because one of my clients put a negative rate and closed the contract (You mentioned as well that Upwork always on client side), because of that rate I've loosed my top rated status profile rate etc...
      now I won't to come back and start agency with team, I hope this will bring us some fresh projects.

    Greetings from California. 🙂 What is the difference between registering as an agency vs being a contractor and hiring subcontractors for parts of your projects? It would be great to know from legal perspective as well. Also, I wanted to comment that your English is great. I do hear Russian accent, but it is not thick. For someone who hasn't lived in US at least for 10 years, you sound amazing. I was shocked to find out that you actually live in Ukraine and not somewhere in New York. What city in Ukraine do you live in?

    • @OlgaPogozheva
      @OlgaPogozheva  Před rokem

      Wow, this is a lengthy one :) let me try to cover all of your questions.
      1) I live in Odessa, Ukraine (born, raised, and probably will die here, haha)
      2) I've worked with US clients for about 8 years now, so I have to sound convincing, even if not 100% accent-free😅
      3) there's no difference in registering, you, either way, register as an individual, and then, if you choose to, you can create an agency under your name
      4) hiring subcontractors on Upwork is kinda prohibited, so you risk being kicked out of the platform if any of your clients choose to report you
      5) however, if you operate as an Agency, you can add agency members (individuals), agree on the hourly rate you pay to them, then set the hourly rate you're going to sell them to your clients in their profiles. Good to go!
      6) Legally it doesn't matter either - when on the platform. You are being paid on whatever account you choose - your individual one or your corporate one (if you have a legal company). How you pay your taxes and pay your contractors outside of Upwork, is none of their business ;)

      Actually, you can be both a member of one agency and create a separate one. Upwork doesn’t allow you to create 2 agencies (you can only create one), but you can be associated with few agencies and create your own. @@gracedreamy2925 1) So he doesn't have neither his own account, nor the agency yet? Or did someone already create an agency for him? or will YOU have to do all of this?
      Because I've been there, and honestly it's quite a messy business. You'll need all sorts of documents from him (to prove his home address etc), and the access to his email (or you will have to create a separate email for him). Then he'll have to prove his profile to Upwork by Upwork staff by video call (and you'll have to transfer access rights to him for that period). Also, if you create the agency for him, you will no longer be able to create your own under the same upwork account.
      2) and I would strongly recommend you to not create multiple accounts (even from multiple emails), because at some point, you'll get suspended. Been there.
      3) If your boss is an agency owner, then no, you can't make the profile private from him. You can act as a non-exclusive freelancer, meaning that he cannot influence your rates, and that you can work separately from him, but he will still see it.

He is the agency owner and has an amazing profile. He just wants me to join the agency. But, I guess now my work will be visible to him. One more thing, how can I be a non-exclusive worker? Does that option of "connections and permissions" (I guess!) , does that option lie with him (like at his backend), or do I have access to make myself non-exclusive through my side of the upwork account? And also, does that non-exclusivity option appear before or after I've joined the agency, where does it appear? Like do I have to ask my boss to make me non-exclusive?

    • @OlgaPogozheva
      @OlgaPogozheva  Před 2 lety

      @@gracedreamy2925 only the agency owner can make you either exclusive (only work through agency) or non-exclusive freelancer (work both individually and as part of the agency). You can ask your boss to send you the non-exclusive invite because you want to preserve your profile to yourself, too. This is honest and should not arise any misunderstandings.
      p.s. You can try to set your profile's visibility to "private" (in your Settings), but I wouldn't recommend that, if you want to attract new clients on side.
      All in all, I wouldn't worry that much about it. I don't think your boss will check your profile that often. And he won't be notified automatically if you take on a side project, so don't worry.

You surely should make your profit, but not because you're a predator and your people are prey. What a way to think! You accept responsibility along with hiring people. Yes, you make a profit, but because of the service and benefits you, too, provide to both the team and the customer. It is an honest and win-win business, if you treat ALL parties with the respect and adequacy they deserve. I mean... it's not about regrets, morale, prey...
