  • Ted Johnson joins Mike Felger and Michael Holley on Boston Sports Tonight to break down episodes 9 and 10 of "The Dynasty: New England Patriots" on Apple TV Plus and Robert Kraft's revelation that it was told to him that Bill Belichick's reason for benching Malcolm Butler in Super Bowl LII vs. the Eagles was not football related and was due to a personal issue between the two.

@@Tsepete no argument there. But with Brady having a record breaking game and Foles making it a shoot out, disrupting one drive, stopping a 6, having the veteran knowledge, situational awareness etc mightve been enough. Ypu are 100 percemt correct that there is zero evidence Butler himself wouldve stopped the Eagles. But it is reasonable to think the Eagles might have thought twice about running the Foles-eligible TD play had NE secondary been at full strength. All I'm saying is that this one time BB chose an option that did not put them in a better mathematical position to win

It goes beyond just taking out the guy who’d played 97% of starts - it was that it was not only unexplained but inexplicable, that it was disruptive to the defense and the entire team, that the defense was clearly not up to the task of containing a backup journeyman QB without him.

No other fan base experienced the joy of going to 50% of the Superbowls in 18 seasons. And if you say it all Brady, then we have to ask who had the final say when Brady was picked? Who made the decision to make Brady the starter when most fans and Kraft had doubts? Who came up with the game plan to slow down the greatest show on turf? Who made the final decision to bring in all the other players that contributed from Seymour to Gronk?

complex ways, and over time relationships corrode if people aren’t on the same page. There was a point when Brady could’ve retired and probably saved his marriage, and he decided instead to keep playing forever to satisfy his ego and competitive drive. Was a point when Belichick probably should’ve retired and handed the reins to Josh McDaniel, Jerod Mayo, etc. but he had to satisfy his ego and competitive drive for whatever reason. The whole thing reminds me of the saying, don’t meet your heroes. But as a human, it is fascinating, and as a fan that 20 year run was phenomenal.

Agree 100%. Belichick led the team to 9 Super Bowls & 6 rings in 19 seasons. Other owners have faded into irrelevance after their teams stop winning rings & become desperate to regain media coverage in that reverent tone. Instead of being grateful, this “documentary” is Kraft’s attempt as he fades into being viewed by the public as a more disciplined Jim Irsay. It should’ve celebrated Brady AND Belichick. It’s like it goes back to Art Modell’s view that Belichick was just a difficult jerk who got lucky to stumble into Tom Brady.
IMHO this new coach cares too much about being nicer to media than Bill was & what media says about him to maintain the laser focus on all the things that the most successful coaches do to win championships. My prediction is that there will be drama & he will not win a Super Bowl.

Neolithic incompetence. Never liked Patricia because of his attitude and taking credit he did not earn. So Kraft is accurate here but he should have come down to the locker room. It’s the Super Bowl!! Point blank: Why is he on the bench?!! He should have got to the bottom of it. Kraft I’m sure regrets that.

On Thursday night he entered the team hotel minutes before curfew after attending a concert with Floyd Mayweather. Steven Belichick saw him walk in and away from prying eyes confronted Malcolm, questioning his level of commitment. The 2 men argued, w/ a furious Butler calling Steven "Daddy's Boy" among other things. After finding out about this incident Bill said nothing, but would use it as ammunition to devastate the former Super Bowl hero, regardless of what was best for his team.

@user-fe7py7ws1c No, you just don't have a clue what you're talking about.
First off, it was Rowe that started over Butler, not Logan Ryan. Logan Ryan was also better than Butler at that point... but left and was playing in Tennesee at the time. Butler joined Ryan in Tennesee the next season, where he was heavily outplayed by him.
As far as the Touchdowns you think Butler was going to prevent, which ones would they be?
      - the 21 yard TD run by Legarette Blount? How you figure he was going to do that?
      - The TD catch by Nick Foles, on the trick play? No, Foles wasn't the responsibility of the corners on the play, one of the linebackers was supposed to follow him out there.
      - The TD reception by RB Cory Clement? No, it was LB Elandon Roberts & Safety Patrick Chung on the coverage for that play.
      - The TD catch by TE Zac Ertz? No, it was Devin McCourty covering him on that play and he slipped.
The only TD that comes into question was the TD catch by Alshon Jeffery, and he blanketed by Eric Rowe on the play, he just went up and high pointed the ball, and brought down an amazing catch... Alshon Jeffery at 6'5", outlept 6'1" Eric Rowe for the ball. Somehow, you think 2 inch shorter Malcolm Butler, who was beat by taller WRs all season, and was beat by Graham for that catch in 2014, was going to outleap a much taller Alshon Jeffery to the ball? Smh...
Nah, Malcolm Butler was appropriately benched for this game. He may have been help as a better nickel backup to limit some yards, but he wasn't stopping the offensive scoring machine that both teams were in that game, and Philadelphia was all season long, regardless of QB.

They said that Robert Kraft demanded that Bill Belichik trade Jimmy Garoppolo which he did to show confidence in Tom. Tom didn't have a contract going into 2020 so he could do whatever the heck he wanted at that point. He was a free agent. There's no way you can expect me to believe that Belichik thought or said that it was a good decision for Tom to leave because Belichik didn't have a legitimate quarterback on the roster. He had Stidham and Hoyer. He brought in Cam Newton late because nobody wanted him. Of course he expected Tom to come back on another shitty one year deal. He gambled and lost. The only way he would want Tommy to leave with what he had on the roster at QB at the time is if he wanted to stick it to his owner as payback for meddling with the Garoppolo situation. Robert Kraft is a businessman. If you weren't gonna have Tommy under contract for 2020 he should have been traded by the deadline in the last year of his deal for assets. How did you let him walk for free???!!!! Huge mistake. Who's fault is that?!!!!
