  • In this video, we’re going to take it back to Super Bowl 52. We’ll go over how bizarre Malcolm Butler’s benching was, and we’ll talk about the theories surrounding the benching, including one involving Steve Belichick backed by well-connected CBS analyst and former NFL MVP Boomer Esiason.

    By pulling Butler for the entire game, BB confused his own defense which was used to him being out there. Tom Curren and a lot of Patriot writers agreed after the game that the Patriots would have won with Butler. He was one of their best tacklers in the open field. That's exactly what happened. As usual, I watched everything on TV leading up to the SB. I could not believe it, when Belichick was shown "courtside" at a NBA game during SB week when you would think all the hatches would have been battened down. He was courtside days before the SB with his gf watching a worthless game. I wondered, don't tell me he's not going to go full out for this SB because Kraft made him trade Jimmy G? And then during the national anthem I noticed Malcolm was upset and thought, he can't be this emotional for the song? I thought something else (maybe something happened to a family member). Instead, I get my answer about 10 minutes into the game when I notice he is not on the field. If I was Kraft, I would have fired Belichick after that game. He let his arrogance get in the way of the team. Same when he wanted to show everyone how great he was when he wanted to get rid of Tom earlier that year. Same when it happened earlier this year. You think he knew POS Newton was going to be available. He lucked out, but in the end, Newton ain't the answer. It will end badly for BB.

    I don’t know for sure, however another stop would’ve helped. I can think of one specific stop that might have helped. After coming out of halftime 10 points down Tom Brady led the Pats on a methodical drive closing the gap to 22-19. In that first ensuing series the Eagles faced a 3rd and 5 at their own 30. Foles hit Agolar for 2 yards and he squirmed away from Bademosi to gain the needed yardage. Had Butler been in, ( he made the team and eventually started due to his sure tackling ability), he stops Agolar short and Philly goes 3 and out and their tired defense faces a hot Brady! After that play Philly went down the field scored a TD putting them up 10 again!

  • @TitanicHorseRacingLover

    I enjoyed your video. Great job. There is the expression, "Cut your nose off, to spite your face," or whatever. I think the benching of Butler by Belichick was definitely some of that. Belichick wanted to make a point as to who was in charge, so he was going to punish the best tackler on the team, during the biggest game, even if it harms the team's effort to win the Super Bowl. Whatever the infraction was, I still think Belichick could have benched him for a quarter and not the entire game, when it was obvious, that the defense was struggling. Anyway, do the Pats win if Butler is in the game? That is pure speculation. IMO, the loss of LB Donte' Hightower was the biggest detriment to the Pats' chances of winning the SB. He was lost with a season-ending injury against the Falcons in Week 4 or 5 of that season. That is one of the reasons why the pass-rush suffered. Hightower makes that defense way better. The benching of Butler definitely divided the team and I think that hurt their chances of winning as well.

    Nope, Kraft undermined bill when Belichick tried to trade Brady earlier in the season. Craft gave bill all the power in the world however when Bill tried to trade krafts baby boy he did not like it. Bill thought Jimmy Garoppolo was his best quarterback, kraft traded Garoppolo for basically nothing, so he couldn’t start Jimmy over Tom. In Bill’s eyes he said you underminded me and you took away my best player therefore I’m going to take away your best player. Bill says I am in charge of this team and you are not that is the way it is always been and that is the way it’s going to be. Bill had to teach Robert Kraft a lesson by benching Malcolm butler and losing the Super Bowl. By doing this bill gets to keep all the power in the world. Most NFL fans have no idea that the most important player on any team is the owner. If the owner undermines one of the greatest coaches of all time this is the result that you will get.

    • @michaelshaw7652
      @michaelshaw7652 Před 3 lety +4

      Jimmy Garoppolo for Brady was a good decision? You are out of your mind! Intentionally throwing the most important game for whatever reason disqualifies BB as GOAT coach, not even an ethical and professional coach.
      Without Brady, Belichick was an average coach at most. Without Belichick, Brady is still a champion.

    If this is a “punishment” for Butler, then BB is the biggest idiot. No that he doesn’t have Brady to carry him with regular 300 yard and 4th comebacks, we will see if he’s really any good. So far it does not look promising.

    Waited a long time to watch any video or read about benching of Butler. It is July 2020.
    Given that the 2017 defense had many wholes to attack, the offense was good enough to beat everyone but the Eagles, and if Butler plays, you see far less of Rowe, very little of Bademosi, and zero of Richards. Probably enough to beat the Eagles.
    Now, Belichick. I trust him. Flat out. Could/should Butler have played after sitting out a quarter? I don’t know, but the locker room mood, if accurate is a tell tale sign how the players felt.
    The incident happened in private, do even the players do not know what happened.

    and not one mention in the entire video of, well, how did Belicheck and the Patriots react to this crushing Superbowl loss? They went back to the drawing board and built a great new defense, had an amazing season, won the AFC championship in a thriller over Mahomes & the Chiefs, then dismantled L.A.'s vaunted offense to win another gold ball. Got to give credit where it's due.

    I'm 150% positive that the Patriots win that game if Butler plays. We needed 1 stop and the entire rhythm of that game is changed. I remember watching the first Eagles touchdown and thinking WTF is Rowe doing in the game for Butler??? When it became apparent that Butler was not going to play, I remember knowing in my heart that game was lost. Not because Butler is so great either, if you understand football then you understand the concept of continuity and the importance of having it on defense.
